I loved reading this book because it so accurately describes the pain and pleasure of thru-hiking the AT. I’m so grateful I came to know Sam-I-Am and the whole cast of characters he depicts so well in my thru-hike. I’ve read plenty of books on the AT and as a description of the true thru-hikers’ experience, this is the most authentic.Whilst it’s an excellent narrative about the physical journey, this book’s true value lies in its deep optimism about humanity. As a corrections officer Sam experienced the worst examples of humankind, and this book shows how the Trail helped him find his way back to a belief in the goodness and kindness of people.I especially recommend this book to anyone who is depressed or frustrated about being stuck in a rut. It will motivate them to finish it with a smile, jump out of their armchair and head for the hills! Not everyone has the opportunity to thru-hike the AT, but an adventure in the wilderness is within most people’s grasp if they really want it. By ‘Happy.’

I have read no less than 28 books on the Appalachian Trail. Never hiked it - never will. Physical limitations have seen to that. This is, without a doubt, the best read I have come in contact with to date. The odd thing is that it is hard to put my finger on the one thing that makes this approach work so well. Sam has a way of putting the emotional aspect of the trailon equal footing with the physical side of the equation so that you are drawn into his world and feel the depth of the relationships he builds along the trail. He is deeper than any other author - yet he does not allow one to feel bogged down with the usual day-to-day blow by blow progression that is per usual with these accounts. WELL DONE!! A MUST READ FOR ANY AND ALL WHO HAVE EVEN A PASSING INTEREST IN LONG DISTANCE HIKING.

Sam Ducharme is a good guy who gives a nice presentation of his 2015 Appalachian Trail thru-hike to many groups. Sam’s enthusiasm for the trail is infectious and his book is enjoyable. There’s a representative blending of what an AT hike is like today, which has changed markedly from what it was fifty years ago. I liked Sam’s story and how he told it. There’re a few things that could have been tempered. For example, the lengthy instructions on performing personal hygiene in the woods or the graphic and disgusting description of the crummy (gross) toilet, sink, and shower/bath in a Pearisburg, VA motel room, which wreaked of cigarette smoke. Sam spent the night in the hallway, sitting in a chair rescued from a nearby dumpster. Part of the experience, but…not so interesting. The book shifts in tone once Sam reaches Connecticut and becomes rather emotional by the time Sam takes his place marching in line to the summit of Katadhin. The final pages are poignant as Sam writes, “For me, that lifestyle I love is over for good. Sure, I could go hiking anytime, but I knew it wouldn’t be the same.” Returning home, he has a hard time adjusting and is depressed. The reader senses the sadness. Everyone relates differently to the trail; however, for Sam it was evidently more about the comraderies and personalities than the connection with nature and the love of the adventure. Early pioneers of the trail Earl Shaffer, Grandma Gatewood, Dorothy Laker all hiked alone on a far more desolate trail that lacked the multiple of amenities the hiker enjoys today. Yet, the siren call of the trail ran deep and beckoned them each to return and complete two more thru hikes. There is not one way or a right way, only a different time and trail.

A personal narrative, anecdotal, full of humor and honesty.Reads easy, telling an epic tale in plain, down to earth language.I think any aspiring through-hiker, casual woods walker, nature lover or pretty much anybody with a drop of adventuresome blood will find Sam's book an inspirational page turner.Well Done!

Whether you are a biker or couch potato, "Soul Searching on the Appalachian Trail" is an enjoyable story told by Sam I Am. You will laugh, tear-up, and learn about Sam and the people he interacts with throughout his journey. Also sent one to my brother who is looking forward to reading it.

Let me start by saying my #1 bucket list item is to hike the AT. Due to my desire to accomplish this "#1 bucket list item" I have read trail guides, maps, autobiographies, how-to's, and countless articles pertaining to thru-hiking the AT. I have to say, while Sam's book was not the most in depth AT book I have read, I rather appreciate it for it's lighter hand and less technical discussion. This honestly is the only autobiographical AT book that made me laugh out loud A LOT! I appreciate his candid nature when he expresses the full range of emotions he experienced from tip to tip of the trail and I found myself also choking up a couple times during the read. On a personal note, I was starting to see my dream of hiking the AT fade as the years wear by, Sam's story has reignited the flame and reinforced the thought that I don't have to be a 20-something and in Cross-fit condition to do it. My chance may not come for another 10 or 20 years but when the opportunity knocks I'm gonna answer the door and say "OBASTID" here we go!!!!ShawnaThompson, CT

Great illustrations but lackluster storyline. There is an Easter Egg Hunt and the rabbit can’t find any eggs, he finally finds a special egg but he steps on it and breaks it, he’s sad, his mom comforts him by telling him the egg is like the tomb from which Jesus rose and that he did a good thing by reminding everyone about Jesus. Was excited about this book because of the great reviews. We wanted a book to teach our toddler about the real meaning of Easter. This was not it.

If you like beautiful photographs and little text, this is the book for you. I have not seen the featured rooms in other books. They are often sumptuous and a delight to see. The minimal text is presented in several languages. Sometimes the text is a bit too minimal in that you would like to know more about specific pieces in the rooms. Overall it is a wonderful visual experience.

A little too much of modern and edgy for me. I like traditional and historic Paris, I guess.Still a beautiful book. However, the same photos or apartments appear in other books.So, bummer.

Beautiful style with great ideas.

OK...I agree with previous reviewers with regard to the photography in this book...it is spectacular! I am a fan of the "french style" of decorating and have several interior design books that reflect that aesthetic. Upon receiving this one, I voraciously went through it on the day it was received and did enjoy the beautiful pictures, however, I knew almost immediately that this would not be a book that I would refer to often in the future. I get inspiration for my own interior by referencing ideas from others and expounding on them to come up with new and different style options. This book wouldn't offer much inspiration for my purposes since all the rooms pictured are on such a grand scale. I will hang on to it and maybe pull it out periodically for entertainment, but this one may collect a little dust on my bookshelf in the meantime! Knowing what I know now, I would probably have chosen to spend what I spent on this lovely book on TWO less glamorous but more informative volumes! Put simply, if you are looking for books on interior design to aid you in feathering your own nest, don't bother with this one unless you have deep pockets and/or cavernous rooms to fill!

While there is commentary (in five languages) about each of the twenty-two living quarters, this book, as you would expect from one about interior design, is all about the visual. Exquisitely printed, it is one that I would hesitate to let a visitor in my cluttered home even leaf through. It is that beautiful.My second reaction, the one I always have when viewing such splendor, is a question: does anyone really live like this? I suppose the answer must be yes. But I always wonder where they hid the newspaper and do they have a household pet?But back to these outrageously beautiful photographs. Perfectly lit and composed, they are a visual delight. Surely no one does better architectual photography than Mr. Guntli.While neither I nor anyone I hold dear will ever come close to having a dwelling like any of these, what we mortals can take from such a book is ideas on how to improve our own interiors. For example, I know now where to hang my pen-and-ink drawing of my cat: by my bed. (p. 177) And I want that 19th Century brass bed on the same page, along with those gorgeous African armchairs (p. 22).In "Country Home in Paris" Terry de Gunzburg (p.54) says that "what is most important for a home is its soul, the life it lives rather than it being a mere showcase of beautiful objects." I could not agree more. I would argue that some of these homes have one art object too many, but then I could be wrong. In any event, LIVING IN STYLE: PARIS will make you want to visit or revisit, as the case may be, that city when you see all the exterior scenes from the windows of these homes. While you probably will never see any of these interiors, you can certainly take in all the beauty of one of the world's great cities.

I love to splurge on magazines such as Elle Décor and Architectural Digest to get ideas for what to do with my own space. (No Better Homes & Gardens for me!) My friends make fun of me all the time for spending so much on those publications. I was so happy when they surprised me with this wonderful book for my birthday! I love it! I loved getting a glimpse inside the homes of famous personalities like Diane von Furstenberg. Each space is sophisticated, and all the captions explain the history of each unique space and what the decorators did to give it a personality of its own. A great peak into the prestigious homes in Paris, this book is great inspiration for the pied-à-terre I aspire to.

A good Loeb should (if we are honest) be easily usable as a clandestine crib for the (lazy, hurried, or linguistically challenged) reader who wants to translate the Greek with an eye on the English; at the same time, it should meet exacting standards of scholarship. Jones's is accessible and erudite. His discussion of how he has established his text is fuller and clearer than most, and allows the non-specialist to take some pleasure in the detective work involved in the process; in tracing, for example, Richard Bentley's marginalia preserved in his copy of a previous edition. The text is judicious and the translation stylishly capture's the sophist's rhetorical range. It is based on, but betters, Christopher Jones's abridged translation for Penguin Classics, published in 1970. It is a good read in its own right: no mean feat. Excellent introductory material and maps help chart Apollonius's imaginary journey. Wonderful translation of a fascinating and little talked about work of the ancient world

_This is the definative, unabridged translation of Philostratus' _Life of Apollonius_ for your permanent library. The Jones translation was made from the Teuber text of C.L. Kayser._Philostratus completed this work in C.E. 220, while the historical Apollonius was generally thought to have left this world around C.E. 98. Apollonius is presented as an example of the ideal spiritual and good man in the classical world. In a Roman Empire ruled increasingly by force, violence, and greed, this Apollonius would be the ideal role model. Indeed, that is what you encounter in the books, example after example of Apollonius encountering worldly and wicked men and setting them straight. It is still rather inspiring, even though you realize that this Apollonius is probably a composite character of many philosophical and religious characters of the classical world. This is not to categorically state that there was no original, Pythagorean, named Apollonius that served as the original inspiration- it is just that we do not know how much of the original is still there._Apollonius was to be understood as the champion of traditional "pagan" cults and philosophy against the new religion of Christianity. Apollonius is shown to be tolerant to other religions and faiths- something that the new cult, even then, was not. Perhaps his very name reflected this tolerance and defense of the traditional. This is also no doubt why he visits India during his travels, for even in those days the Vedic tradition was seen as the "root" of all religious tradition._In any case, the account is still quite edifying in its depiction of what was considered the archetypical example of the good, just, and tolerant man in the late classical world.

Bill Maclay, founder and president of Maclay Architects, has been a lecturer and educator at colleges, universities, and conferences focused on environmental design. He is also past president of the Vermont Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and has served on the board of directors of the Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility and the Yestermorrow Design/Build School, among other organizations.Maclay and his firm have long been involved in research on all aspects of environmental design, including sustainable design, indoor air quality, building science, material selection, and related issues. Maclay committed to using renewable energy to create a nonfossil-fuel-based future in 1970. He developed, designed, and built one of the first renewable communities in the US, and his innovative renewable and energy-conserving projects have been exhibited and published internationally. Once you see the quality and content of this book, however, you'll see that it's well worth it.Most of the book is centered around case studies. Beautiful diagrams and photography are coupled with cold, hard data and provide a great foundation for educating yourself on energy efficient home building strategies.I especially like the author's acknowledgment that ROI is important. Just because you can do net-zero doesn't mean it's awesome cost effective. There is a balance.This is a great book for established builders and architects, as well as laypeople just interested in the field.

As a veteran Builder with 41 years in the industry, I have found this book detailed, thorough, beautiful and inspiring. The building sections and analysis are clear and balenced, and the presentation of everything from the math and science to the art and trades is comprehensive.
