It is a BRAVE account of her life, her struggles, her mistakes and her metamorphosis. Lucky for us she decided to share it with the world. If you let it, it can be a wakeup call for you. A match to fire up your inner light that wants to shine bright along with hers.I devoured this book in one day. And I plan to read it again this week, heeding Hazel’s invitation to action on my own life by diving into the exercises she sets forth in the book. Wow, what amazing journey! I haven't devoured a book this quickly in a long time and I love to read. Hazel bravely shares her journey filled with trauma and violence and so much stacked against her through her breakthroughs and how she created a life of light and love and abundance. Immediately in chapter 1, I related to my own sob story, my many sob stories and how I have allowed them to impact my own life. I felt as if Hazel was speaking directly to me in this beautifully honest, raw, and authentic book. I cried, I laughed, and I had to pause after chapter 18 becuase it struck deep cord with me, a chapter about guiding others in such a gentle and loving way to dream bigger. What a gift! She not only shares her story, she also shares how she created and continues to create a life she wants. I expereinced a lot of aha moments and reading this left me in a state of joy and wonder --- what life am I going to create??? The possibilities are infinite. I loved every bit of this.

The first part of this book breaks your heart; the heartaches and hardship the family had endured growing up in the toughest neighborhood in Los Angeles seem to indicate a foreseeable pattern for young Hazel and her sisters. Hazel is so brave to confront her past, to realize that it ain't so and that it does not have to be so set her free. The kind boss she met encouraged her to go to school, to change her way of being, and the transformative self discovery she embarked upon enriched her life. I cried reading her story; I cried when she casually mentioned that at one point both of her parents were in jail; I cried when she was alone, with a child, and with bills to pay, mouth to feed, and her life on the line. The writing is so beautiful because it is so authentic; the lessons she shared generously as a business woman all came from her courage to continuously transform herself. There is no stopping of Hazel; I am waiting for the movie to come out, the chain restaurants under her name, and the good that she will be doing to transform her old neighborhood. I could not put it down; had to read it on the plane, with tears streaming down my fact. Hazel: you are truly beautiful inside and out and courageous. I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend who read it the day it came out. I started reading it while on vacation and couldn’t put it down anymore.What a story of succeeding through self reflection, and gradual implementation of small changes that made all the difference. It sheds a new light on how easy many of us have it and yet don’t live up to our true potential. Can’t even imagine how hard it must have been for Hazel to go through the transition she described. This book would have been much better if it provided more model LinkedIn profiles. Instead, the author uses her profile 100 times. After seeing here LinkedIn profile picture he first 50 times, you get real tired of seeing it. I would have used different profile images or better yet, different model profiles altogether. It wouldn't have affected the content. I did notice LinkedIn changed a few layout sections so some of the screenshots are already obsolete.The checklists are useful though. And some of the suggestions for what to write are pretty good examples. Her advice on keeping the audience in mind is common sense, but I totally forgot about it. My profile had two audiences and I had to choose one. This made me have to go over it again and create a consistent profile. Overal, this is a valuable reference book.

This book is very detailed and organized. The amount of time it takes to do it right is no small task. The service this author offers as a turn key solution is detailed in this book but not as an item for sale. If you read this book you will know what to do. Having the time and expertise to get it done in my opinion should be left to professional like this author and her team.

You won't get too far into this how-to book before your frustrations with it will grow greater and greater. It includes very specific instructions about how to manipulate LinkedIn to make it do what you want it to do, but when you attempt to implement the suggestions you find that there's no such button to click or pop-up window that appears. Must be terribly outdated. Waste of time! And money

I am a retired physician but I knew very little about the history and science that this book explores. This book is easy and very interesting to read. It is a layman’s guide to the politics, early science, and history of forensic medicine and a great tribute to those whose intelligence and hard work lead us to where we are today. The reader will enjoy the many human interest cases discussed that give the book a fascinating personal touch. This book is for those who like science, history and page turning nonfiction.

If you expect a dense scientific text or will be disappointed that some of the cases are accidental deaths and not murder, don't read. However, if like me you enjoy a bit of history, a bit of science, a lot of morbid investigation, and the triumphant underdog story of two luminary forensic examiners against the backdrop of Prohibition, the book is fascinating and morbidly fun.The title "Poisoner's Handbook" belies the book's true focus, the two amazing men at the center of each of the public histories of the poisons Blum writes about: chloroform, arsenic, cyanide, mercury, carbon monoxide, radium, ethyl and methyl alcohols, and thallium.Charles Norris, first Chief Medical Examiner of NYC, and his chief toxicologist, Alexander Gettler were, according to Blum, almost solely responsible for modernizing forensic science in the United States. Before Norris' appointment, the office of coroner required no medical training, and death certificates were often incomplete or falsified for bribes if they were filled out at all. Norris and Gettler spent their careers making forensics a rigorous study, and as if that weren't enough, were hugely influential crusaders for regulation of toxic substances, and for the repeal of Prohibition, which engendered a slew of deadly bootleg concoctions, including the industrial wood grain alcohol that the government endeavored to make more poisonous than it already was, knowing that it would be imbibed by prohibition breakers.Although the writing was snappy and fast-faced, Blum had little work to do to create drama; Norris and Gettler's heroic efforts to identify the effects of these poisons on the body in many cases for the very first time, and the huge failure that was the Prohibition largely did her work for her. I was riveted. I'm not sure why there isn't yet a forensic TV drama about the two men and the poisons they studied.

The Poisoner’s Handbook is a captivating blend of 1920’s crime stories and the chemistry that made it all possible.Blum’s book is easy to read (though it assumes an intelligent reader), the chemistry is never overwhelming, and the two gentlemen that she chose to follow throughout the chemical boom of the Roaring 20’s led fascinating jobs filled with mystery, murder, death, ground brains and Bunsen burners. And at under 300 pages, it is just the right length.I often use non-fiction books such as this to cleanse my palate (as it were) if I’ve had a bit too much fantasy and SciFi. This book did the trick.Also, reading the anecdotes in this book makes me want to quit my job and write murder mysteries because there are just so many sneaky ways of killing people! I absolutely loved this book. It is a highly readable account of the rise of forensic medicine and toxicology in the United States, focusing on the Bellevue lab in New York City. The book talks about a number of homicides (or, in some cases, accidents that were believed to be homicides) that resulted from poisonous chemicals. There are chapters on arsenic, cyanide, carbon monoxide, radium, thallium, etc. Some of the compounds that the author discusses were known to be poisons (like arsenic and cyanide, for example), whereas some were new compounds, discovered in the first third of the twentieth century, that were not discovered to be poisonous until ill effects were reported.The book is not just about crime or homicidal maniacs who use poison as their weapon of choice. It is also about changing technologies, corporate greed, and egregious misuse of chemical compounds that borders on being comical to the modern reader. (Radium health tonics. Blearghhh.)The book is well written (the crisp, non-academic writing is very refreshing - unlike the radium health tonics) and does not get overly bogged down in scientific terms. The author provides enough medical and scientific background to be relevant, but she presents it in layman's terms. I love reading about the periodic table, but since I am not a scientist, I find that sometimes I get lost when there is too much detail. That is not the case here. I highly recommend this book.

I thought this book read like a novel. I had bought it as a reference, and have used it as such, but read it from cover to cover. I've noted there are critiques that say some of the science is incorrect, so I suppose I'd check before I used a specific point in your own novel. I would not let the criticism deter you from buying it. The discussion of alcohol poisoning during Prohibition is enough reason to read this. I don't mention my own books in a review of others,' but in this case it's a compliment to Ms. Blum. Her Prohibition discussion helped me a lot as I wrote Rekindling Motives. Rekindling Motives (Jolie Gentil Cozy Mystery Series Book 2) I recommend this book for anyone who wants a broad overview of the topic.

About the Author

Baz Dreisinger is an Associate Professor in the English Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, and the founder and Academic Director of the Prison-to-College Pipeline program (P2CP), which offers credit-bearing college courses and reentry planning to incarcerated men. She is also a reporter on popular culture, the Caribbean, world music, and race-related issues for the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, and NPR, among others, and a co-producer and co-writer of the documentaries Black & Blue: Legends of the Hip-Hop Cop and Rhyme & Punishment. I read this book for my Social Justice class and I had the honor of meeting the author (and having her sign my book).This book was insanely good. Our class had just read The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness prior to this and this book out shined it in comparison. The New Jim Crow left me dissatisfied at the end, offering me no real, clear, solution to the problem. This book, however, did and gave me hope for the future. Additionally, her writing style is incredible. It's so engaging and she really takes you on a journey. She has a way of making some big points in really subtle ways.As for meeting her, she is just as wonderful in person and she really is doing so much for prison reform and mass incarceration. She is working on so many new projects. Her optimism is inspiring

Wonderful book - well written, with the perfect duo of academic speak and personal voice. I have two major critiques - Baz openly states she has never been the victim of any major crimes, and I believe this completely obscures her vision of forgiveness, which is my second critique - Baz is a huge believer in victims of abuse forgiving their abusers, something that I fundamentally disagree with her on. Victims of abuse should never be made to feel that they have to forgive their abusers - anger and hatred are a completely normal and reasonable response to being attacked, abused, violated, etc. These are huge critiques that were very hard for me to move past for a while, as I feel that Baz otherizes survivors and victims of abuse who refuse to accept an apology from their abusers - but once I started to tune these words and sentiments out, I saw the incredible value in Baz's research and her interactions with folks in prisons around the world.

An inspiring read by one who has traveled the dark places in our world that are our prisons. Throughout the book, Ms. Dreisinger does illustrate that even in these dark places, the light of human ingenuity is alive and well and faith plays a major part of that. I volunteer with Our Children's Place at Coastal Horizons ([...]) as an Advisory Board member whose purpose is to educate the public on the invisible victims of crime, the children of those incarcerated. This book is a breath of fresh air and a clarion call for all of society to re-examine the wholesale warehousing of men and women. While some are indeed a threat to themselves and others, so many others languish within prison walls who are no real threat and other options must be sought.

Great story. I learned a lot. My city used it for their One Book, One Bakersfield event. I didn't feel it was a balanced story, because when you compare Norway to the United States, it's not the same culture or mix of population. I'd like to hear from some of the prison guards. There's sooo much $ in prisons, I can't imagine the whole thing being undone. One can only hope for reform, but money talks . . . very LOUD!

One of the best books on this topic! Bought it after listening it being read on the local radio (WRBH New Orleans). Beautiful writing style and a great insight into prison systems around the world. I follow the author on Twitter now for those interested- @bazdreisinger

With more attention than ever being paid to the problems of mass incarceration and the Prison Industrial Complex, this book provides a wonderful survey of how other countries around the world deal with the issues of punishment, rehabilitation and reentry into society after incarceration. It is an inspiring book, showing many different avenues and approaches to improving the systems of incarceration that we have in place in America.

Though I vacillated between questioning Dreisinger's methods and admiring her audacity, this book is a really important and accessible addition to the discussion of what a just society looks like.

Fasinating and thought provoking even with anti- American slant. Not fair to compare US to Norway.
