Becksvoort believes that "understanding Shaker furniture requires understanding the faith of the people who created it." Interesting look at the history associated with the woodworking. If you want to know "why" more than "how" associated with Shaker furniture, this is an interesting read. I read the sections that interested me but will keep it around and maybe look at this again when I start another shaker project

I bought this book to read about Shaker furniture but it turns out to be much more. It contains well researched information on the Shakers philosophy and way of life - comparison of the Shaker style to Scandinavian and Victorian styles - introduction to the Shaker Villages and some of the most notorious craftsmen, and good information about the numerous depicted furniture. All written in plain and very readable text accompanied with beautiful photographs. Excellent book.

This was an excellent book. I enjoyed reading it as well as studying the colored pictures. It gave a good history of the Shakers. I wanted to know more about Shaker furniture so I could help explain to my clients why they would or wouldn't want to do a shaker style in their home. This book gave me the info I needed but wasn't too drawn out. It has many photos of lots of furniture from case pieces to tables and chairs. This was a good value.

A great broad history of Shaker life, craft, and design, generously illustrated with many well chosen photographs of very many shaker designed and made products, furnishing, and furniture pieces. A very thorough and helpful insight into the mind, soul, daily life of, and the great and moving achievements of Shaker people and their culture.

Although the Editorial seem to deliver a book with many details for the construction of shaker furniture, the book merely contains very few pages with very basic techniques. You will not find any plans/measurements or proportions. The book contains many pictures you can use as a resource book. For the people interested in the style itself, the book is outstanding from the historic point of view and very well printed and edited.

Well researched, well written and beatifully photographed, this is a carefully and respectfully written look at an often little understood and underappreciated aspect of American social and design history.

These scientists were convinced that the spreading of germs was central to illness and disease, and they struggled to improve healthcare within a system unreceptive to these ideas and the practical changes they would necessitate. As germs were ignored as underlying causes of disease in that era, social and community factors of health are ignored today: “[in treating socially disadvantaged patients], I am up against a body system that has been overrun by factors well outside the scope of medical practice . . . Ignoring social determinants [of health] is equivalent to treating patients with unwashed hands and wondering why disease keeps spreading.”“How Neighborhoods Make us Sick” follows through on this analogy, outlining the social determinants of health, interlaced with Squires and Lathrops’ narratives of their experiences running and expanding a free healthcare clinic for needy patients in Atlanta’s Westside, many of whom experience interlocking disadvantages in nutrition, housing, education, employment, geographic and economic mobility, and racial injustice -- experiences which are a common feature of life for America’s urban underclass.Squires and Lathrop show that the traditional contemporary American healthcare model, with its emphasis on rigid appointment structure, careful adherence to insurer policies and limitations, and brief diagnostic visits followed (almost exclusively) by either pharmaceutical or surgical interventions, does little to help the health of those in poverty and in otherwise disadvantaged communities. An expanded healthcare model can better serve these communities by providing long term therapy for mental and physical health, counseling and assistant for housing and employment, homeless sheltering, healthy and free or reduced-cost food, community outreach, and careful case tracking and management when these services are centrally located (similar to the “campus model” of welfare services embraced elsewhere by some progressive county governments). The authors provide a roadmap for these facilities, using their own revamped clinic as an example.In the final chapters, Squires and Lathrop confront the limitations of reliance on local charitable services such as their own, and urge readers to engage in national healthcare reform. Until we do so have, we have “implicitly accepted the fact that the poor and uninsured have shorter and unhealthier lives as a necessary consequence of our health care system.”This is a great read on the challenges of treating disadvantaged communities, particularly for those with an evangelical Christian perspective.

It’s no surprise that the lack of access to quality preventative health care caused by poverty affects a persons physical and/or mental health. What this book does is address how other factors including the stress caused by job insecurity, unstable housing, poor educational opportunities, access to healthy foods and other factors come together to prevent good health. The statistics regarding life expectancy based on zip codes was eye opening.The second part of the book offers hope in the form of programs not only at Good Samaritan but also across the country to assist people to reach the goal everyone desires - to be able to provide their families with a safe, sustainable environment in which to thrive.

I cannot say enough good about this book. It's a mix of academic, personal, medical, sociological and more than anything, hopeful. (Although you'll no doubt find yourself caught in the hopelessness of the authors on certain pages, and chapters and even full sections, if you can lean in for the long haul, you'll land in a bounty hope and direction.) I would call this book crucial for any invested in politics, education, health, or urban life. ANY Church body should be reading this...ANY neighbor, parent, teacher, medically related field, counselor, civic worker... would find it beneficial, as well. It's an incredibly well researched book that's brave and vulnerable and a massive gift to present and future generations. Thank you for this well of resources packed into the covers of these pages, Veronica and Breanna!

Practical suggestions for how individuals can get involved in changing peoples' lives.The book is well-written, contains some Bible verses to reinforce a point (without twisting verses out of context) and is full of ways lives are adversely affected, ways organizations and individuals are trying to improve lives, and full of practical suggestions (unlike other Christian titles I've read on various topics that are long on pious platitudes and short on practical application).Will read more deeply in the future and is a helpful reference for the follower of Jesus Christ who wants to make a positive impact in God's Kingdom in practical ways. This is an amazingly well written and well thought out book.It starts with basic examples and expands each.Each chapter develops similarly. The examples are clear. The progression is logical. The book explains the why and how to think in an organized and methodical fashion. There is also a thought in education that students and research can't fail. Very often failure is often the inspiration for future success. This book brings that idea that success can come from failure out.

Most engineers, at least at the master's level, now are exposed to Petroski's books, but if you know any young engineers who have not read them they make a marvelous graduation gift. They relate notable failures in engineering to the history and culture of their time and to the improvements that resulted from them. Some, like the Tacoma Narrows bridge, have made it to television, but the superficial and sensational treatments they receive in television programming don't compare to Petroski's thoughtful and thorough analyses.

The cyclical increase and decrease of design knowledge was an Eye-opener. The complacency that builds up when minor failures happen, but no catastrophic failures occur is scary. As I watch a large amount of engineers approach retirement age in aerospace, I hope we can teach a new generation of engineers to respect the opportunity to learn from failures.

Petroski's expertise is clearly in engineering. Right upfront I will say that I have no engineering aspirations. Yet, I found this book to be engaging and globally relevant. That is because Petroski presents a different way of thinking. Our way of learning and seeking often looks at Success. What he points out is that "success is not simply the absence of failure; it also masks potential modes of failure." If you are planning, seeking, designing -- especially where the stakes are high -- the best advisor is Failure.Using examples from engineering he demonstrates this. Most of the exemplar stories are interesting, though some get bogged down. I can't say that the book is a cogent masterpiece. His first chapter, a summary of a presentation he made, does not seem to fit the premise. Nonetheless, the book and it's perspective-shifting thesis is, in my opinion, extremely important.

As advertised

I'm using this book for my Intro to Structural Engineering class as an extra resource and it's really great. The story-like format and engaging anecdotes make for a pleasant read. It's also very well structured.I'd recommend this if you also just want an abridged history of engineering design, even though you might not be one.

I really hate how Petroski writes; a grumpier, more curmudgeonly engineer there has never been. But it's worth it - great research and a very strong perspective make this an essential ingredient for the designer mindset.

I have been using Frommers for all my leisure travel-related needs for the last 16 years, and it is becoming increasingly apparent to me that they are resting on their laurels.Don't let the year fool you. I am beginning to think that Frommers merely takes the last year's edition and slap the newest year on it to justify purchasing the 'latest' edition.Instead you get clearly outdated, overhyped information. Frommers likes to put it out there that they are 'in the know' for the best experiences, but let me tell you firsthand they overpromise in the form of their descriptions.A few examples. The 'Bear Pits' of Bern. Strongly implying that they have been at the same location for "[hundreds] of years" in the same location. "Be sure to bring a bag of carrots to feed them". Uh, WRONG. The so-called pits looks like a zoo exhibit on a hillside, complete with concrete caves, barriers, etc. In fact, when you go into Bern, you learn quickly that it has moved several times, along with the times. Oh, and forget those carrots. Total fabrication. You are not allowed to feed them.The clock tower in Bern is a bust. Save yourself travel fare and google a picture of it. The great show that is promised is a bust as well.I could go on and on about other places, such as their descriptions of Zurich, Lucerne and such. Don't get me wrong, they are fabulous cities in their own right, each with their own individual character.It's just that I consider it a complete betrayal of trust when you put out an outdated edition, resting on your laurels and never following up to see if you are current.Beware. This book is a piece of junk.

Used this book to help plan a trip to Australia --- only kidding, just seeing if you are paying attention! I had never been to Switzerland and needed to come up with a vacation plan. Frommer's was a good start as they give you a great overview of all areas. Sometimes I wondered if the businesses thay recommend had paid them as I found other establisments to be better than the ones recommended. Overall - it's a good place to start.

What I expected.

Frommer is always a good guide. I haven't actually finished it yet as I'm not traveling until August. Still, it was useful in deciding where we want to spend more time on our itinerary.

This was a gift to friends who are traveling to Switzerland for the first time.....perfect travel companion! And a great gift!

This is the only book I bought for my trip to Switzerland, and I was able to get by very well with it. I visted Zurich, Lucerne, Lugano, Bern, Interlaken, Zermatt, Montreaux, Lausanne, and Geneva, and found the book to have all the information I needed for each city.The format is easy to use, with listings of hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, bars, nightclubs, etc., for each city, and the book includes info on virtually every city and town in Switzerland that a tourist could want to see. For major cities, the book even has maps showing where hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions are located, as well as more detailed maps of proposed "walking tours."There are no photos of Switzerland in this book, except on the front and back cover. Although the lack of photos doesn't bother me, if you want photos of Switzerland in your guide book, I would suggest the DK Eyewitness guide.

I purchased a copy of this book to help with my summer research internship in Switzerland in 2001, and found it to be less useful than the Rough Guides.The Fromer book is written as a fairly terse reference book, listing a few restaurants, hotels of various price ranges, and not much else for the different cities. Sure, there are listings of attractions for the different cities, but the way they are presented is not very helpful to plan trips. On the other hand, the Rough Guides have suggestions on things to do for the different places.So all in all, it depends on your style of planning but I feel that this book is more suited to business travelers.
