The writer focuses less on the concept of Spam itself, and more on his own personal involvement (from his difficulties in publishing articles in major media outlets, to his own conversations with spammers, to his findings traversing through online forums for information). This gives the story told in the book a certain granularity by extracting sub stories from the bigger picture. It’s written more like an extended piece by an investigative journalist, and less like the work that a historian or enthusiast might tell.Where the book does become a bit broader is in its definition of Spam, to include fraud & phising, and the stories the writer tells of peoples experience with online pharmaceuticals (an aside from the rest of the content in which he seemed to be much more personally involved). I always liked these stores, and found them to be the captivating part of the book. For the right audience, this is a great book. One who wants to hear about Krebs’ struggles and ongoing investigation would be very satisfied (and it’s wroth noting that he is a very authoritative source on the subject. His blog is routinely cited by the media and his involvement in the topic extends past the publish date of this book). However, for a passive observer that wants a bit of a broader history, told more like a story, and a more summarized version of personal conversations, events, etc this book doesn’t quite hit the mark.

Spam Nation: The Inside Story of Organized Cybercrime-from Global Epidemic to Your Front DoorBrian Krebs is an investigative journalist and former Washington Post staff reporter, where he covered Internet security, technology policy, cybercrime and privacy issues for the newspaper and website.Brian left the Washington Post after editorial management at WP decided that Cybercrime was an area that was a little too risky for its appetite.Brian went on to found his own Website www.krebsonsecurity.com a daily blog dedicated to in-depth cyber-security news and investigation. Brian has become one of the most informed and prolific writers on the subject of Cybercrime. His first book SPAM Nation chronicles the activities of two leading Russian figures of the Pharmaceutical SPAM racket, Igor Gusev and Victor Vrublevsky, who leaked detailed information about the other in an effort to destroy the other. This book is a worthy read as it details the feud that developed between key Cybercrime characters and the supporting cast of corrupt banks, less than diligent ISP’s, crooked beauracrats and victims of toxic counterfeit drugs bought over the Internet from “Canadian Pharmacies”. These two individuals (Vrublevsy and Gusev), are responsible for a large percentage of SPAM that has plagued your and everyone else’s inboxes for the past 10 years. It provides insight into motives, modus-operandi and the environment, sponsored by corrupt bureaucrats who enable Cybercrime to flourish in Eastern Europe, Russia and parts of Asia. Why is it worth reading? Because YOU and YOUR IDENTITY are under constant threat from billions of SPAM emails and social engineering scams generated by a sophisticated, determined, patient and growing cadre of Cyber criminals. If you have not received a letter from your bank or institution where you hold a credit account offering free credit protection services, advising that you that your credentials may have been stolen and that your account may be compromised in the past 12 months, it is almost certain you will receive one in the next 12 months.Pharma Spam provided the trainer-wheels for the first generation of hackers. They made $millions selling counterfeit pharmaceuticals, manufactured in India, sold via online “Canadian” Pharmacies to Americans who could not afford or could not acquire drugs for any number of serious illnesses and addictive needs. The Botnets that infected and continue to compromise millions of PC’s, causing them to generate billions of Spam emails daily still exist. They provide a platform to develop and launch more sophisticated phishing and spear-phishing attacks.Hackers have perfected their craft in what history will record as the “wild-west” days of the Internet.Ten years ago, these miscreants were making $millions. Now they are making $Billions. An increasing variety of clever scams, including impersonation of senior executives using look-alike URL’s to launch phishing and spear phishing attacks (social engineering), to gain access to the corporate network and commit fraud; extortion, identity theft, credit card theft, website ransom and Intellectual Property theft. The epilogue, A Spam-free World: How you can protect yourself from Cyber-crime, is worth the price of the book ten times over.If you don’t want to read the book, then please observe Brian’s three simple rules to protect your identity… and never click on a suspicious link or a link unless you can expose and validate that the underlying hyperlink is genuine.Rule 1: If you didn’t go looking for it, do not install it.Rule 2: If you installed it, update it.Rule 3: If you no longer need it, remove it.If you are interested in any subject related to Cybercrime, follow @Briankrebs on Twitter, make #Cybercrime a Twitter hashtag that you track and read daily and visit Brian’s website, it’s a must. Finally, if you have never heard of and don’t know what “social engineering” is, then you had better do some research in a hurry, before you become the next victim of identity theft and fraud.

As an infosec professional, I've been a fan of Brian's writing for a long time. Because I admire his blog so much, I very much looked forward to reading Spam Nation. Unfortunately, the book isn't well executed. The editors either pushed too hard or not enough. The first couple chapters read like a memoir and Brian takes numerous stabs at the Washington Post and the media in general. This commentary is misplaced. There's a good deal wrong with newspapers but that's off topic and seems overly personal. Brian's criticism of The Post are generally related to appropriate vetting of sources and material. It's easy to understand Brian's perspective. Spammers act with near impunity and are generally not covered in the media. Moreover, substantiated facts are difficult to obtain on such topics. The problem is that it's easy to get carried away and lose objective perspective. Brian recounts threats of violence in terms of dealing with the Russian mafia. But then he regularly talks with the same individuals who seem like deluded 20-somethings with visions of grandeur. The facts seem questionable and the threats read as overstated.Spam Nation focuses on Pharma spam and the related illegal sales. It's difficult to empathize with the author's perspective that this is a major problem. As is described in the book, many of the medications purchased illegally are the exact same medications sold in the US and perhaps made at the same factory as legitimately purchased products. There are obviously concerns regarding prescription abuse and that the illicit products advertised in spam could be fake or dangerous but war on pharma spam leads down the same road as the failed war on drugs. So long as Americans have prescription drug problems, the factories in developing nations that make the legitimate product will be tempted to (illegally) sell directly; there's too much financial incentive otherwise.Spam is the byproduct of sellers trying to trying to reach buyers. Spam exists because people choose to accept the risks for a lower cost (buyer) or higher profits (seller). For most others Spam is an irritation similar to panhandling. It's unpleasant and there are some risks involved, but it's inevitable and not overly interesting. Because of these problems, I didn't enjoy Spam Nation and can't recommend it. If readers want approachable and current insight on spam and similar infosec topics, they should just go to Kreb's blog.

A nice love story that was an easy read. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

This is a lovely, contemporary romance and a great addition to this series. It has so many heartwarming characters, a delightful village community, members of the nobility and even rock stars!Skye is a caring young lady. She helped bring up her younger sister and looked after their landlord, Norman, until he sadly died. Now she's following his final wishes and visiting Willow Tree Hall in Cranley and the Harris family but she's not sure why!Her introduction to the family starts with her backing the huge caravan she's towing over a vintage car. However, despite this inauspicious start, she's definitely in for some shocks and surprises as she gets to know just what Norman has left her, connects with the family and community and discovers more about herself, her talents and a heartwarming romance! It was great to visit this family again- and just in time to find out more about their struggles to save the Hall, wedding preparations and the festivities. I believe it could be read as a stand-alone but that it is even better if you've read the previous book first as it continues on from it and involves many of the same characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the series. The author has created characters who are believable and easy to relate to, especially because of their flaws, worries and problems. I loved how both Will and Skye re-evaluated their individual goals, desires, beliefs and plans as the story progresses. It is a great contemporary romance and I have no hesitation in highly recommending it.I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley. This is my honest review after choosing to read the book.

Skye has been caring for her younger sister, Summer, since she was 11 or 12 years old. Their mother disappeared. But, the girls were fortunate enough to live with Norman. Norman was an elderly man who rented rooms in his home. When he developed more health issues, Skye took care of him along with her sister.Norman has died and left his books to Summer. Skye, has inherited his beloved Airstream trailer. He also left a letter telling her to go to Willow Tree Hall where he has another surprise for her.It seems she owns half of a lodge. It needs work and it comes with the owner of the other half of the lodge, Will. Will is part of the family who own Willow Tree Hall. There is the elderly earl, his sister, and Sam, the future earl and Will's older brother, along with Sam's fiancee, Annie. This is a family. Will has lived a life away from his family, but conditions have now brought him home, at least for a time. He has been a playboy in the eyes of the tabloids. He has moved from place to place, because that is what he liked. He has kept himself away. When Skye accidentally parks her Airstream on top of his Aston Martin, Will does not become a fan of Skye. But, the rest of the family are delighted to have Skye there for as long as she would like to stay.Slowly, Skye gets an up close and personal view of family life. She is reminded of her past and all the things which were never a part of her life. She was not allowed to be anything but a caregiver. She never learned to be comfortable making choices which would give her joy. Basically, she has no knowledge of joy. Will has grown up with his grandfather. Because of the loss of his parents, Will has kept himself separate from anyone, including his family. He has not invested his time or his money to help keep the estate in the black. Now, things are not going well financially. This is a lovely holiday story. Yes, things fall into place more easily than they would in real life. But, this is not real life, it is a charming story about hope, learning to trust and to love.Skye and Will are really terrific people who have put their lives on the wrong tracks. Each of them are capable of living lives which are much more than they have allowed. There is humor , character, as well as heart in the story. Both the main characters as well as secondary characters add wonderful depth to the plot. The family members are supportive and caring. This is part of a series and I have not read any of the earlier books. I had no problem understanding events and relationships. Ms Sherlock has done a good job of providing the reader with a good path to follow. We see love blossom between 2 individuals. But there is also love of family and love between friends. The texture of the story is filled with warmth.Ms Sherlock is a new author for me. I have enjoyed this story very much. I will look for more of her books.I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley. I am voluntarily writing this review and all opinions are completely my own.

I read this book in one day. It took me away and made me want to keep reading. My favorite parts were all the activities happening around the house-wedding planning, Christmas, and fixing up the lodge. I actually enjoyed the family dynamics more than the romance. The 2 main characters start out opposites-one very selfish and the other very self sacrificing, but after circumstances keep bring them together, they of course find HEA.

This is the third book in the series but I think it reads fine as a stand alone.I love this author’s writing style and she gets a great flow in her books that make them very easy to read – and this one was delightful. The characters are well developed and I really enjoyed getting to know them as the story progressed. I warmed to them straightaway and they really made the book special.4.5 stars from me rounded up to 5 stars for Goodreads and Amazon – very highly recommended and I am really looking forward to reading what she releases next!

A nice romantic comedy about finding joy in life. A story to take you out of the everyday. I enjoyed it while reading it but it wasn't unforgettable. I wanted to love it more but it just didn't move me enough. I could, however, see others really enjoying it and I would still recommend it.

Review

“Anya's Ghost is a masterpiece, of YA literature and of comics.” ―Neil Gaiman“Remarkable. . . . With an attitude and aptitude reminiscent of Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis) who likewise conveyed the particulars of an immigrant adolescence, Brosgol has created a smart, funny and compassionate portrait of someone who, for all her sulking and sneering, is the kind of daughter many parents would like to have. And the kind of girl many of us maybe once were.” ―The New York Times

#13,425 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This graphic novel by Vera Brosgol comes across, at least initially, as a typical teen coming-of-age story. Anya Borzakovskaya is the daughter of a Russian immigrant. She’s frustrated with her family, frustrated with school, frustrated with her (kinda sorta) best friend Siobhan, frustrated with her body and her (lack of) love life and everything else around her. And then one day, Anya falls into a hole in the park and finds a skeleton. And the skeleton comes with a ghost attached — a skinny little girl named Emily who’s been stuck in the hole for 90 years. When Anya gets rescued, Emily ends up tagging along. Anya doesn’t much want a ghost in her life, but she is helpful in certain ways. She can help her with answers during tests. She can find out when her crush will be out of class. She gives her tips on being popular. Emily wants to be Anya’s friend forever. And that could be a problem, because Emily is keeping secrets, and she’s a lot more dangerous than she lets on…I wasn't expecting a lot from this. It starts out the way we’ve seen a couple dozen other graphic novels — misunderstood geek girl, unhappy with her life, grows up, becomes more mature, learns to appreciate the friends and family she has and maybe makes some more friends, too. This one? It follows the familiar path for a while, and then, slowly, it turns into fairly straightforward horror. The end goal is still the same — personal and emotional growth for the protagonist — but it’s interesting how much the tension and fright ramps up, and how serious and powerful the threat becomes. There’s no gore or anything like that, but it’s still a nice piece of low-key horror. The characters are great, too. Anya and Emily are the obvious focal points, but Anya’s mother and brother are also very well-created. Everyone else is fun, too — there’s not a dull character in the bunch — snarky Siobhan, geeky Dima, skeezy Sean, beautiful but miserable Elizabeth, even the school principal at the end.Vera Brosgol’s art is moderately cartoony, but cartooning helps make the characters and situations more universal, more appealing, and more emotional. And the art does a fantastic job of conveying the humor of the story, as well as the eerie shenanigans going on behind the scenes.

Yikes! I got this one wrong! My ten year old loves graphic novels - think Sisters or Awkward - this came up as similar. But it's really not the right age group. Lots of smoking, poor language... she was loving the ghost part, but might be dark for some.Lesson learned that I need to pay closer attention selecting these types of books!

I wont say the story was well written but the ghost parts were good. Amazon should have written: 'This book is for kids above 14' or something like that. Some stuff are so disgusting (no offence if you like romance) I could have vomited. Not going to say what they are. (Spoiler alert from here onwards)The ghost is ok at first and she was kind and friendly before the main character before she found out the truth about the ghost, Emily. What they searched on the computar was kind of creepy. Emily looked like she had blood flowing out of her eyes. Eventually she managed to convince Emily to go back to her hole. The creepiest parts was when Emily managed take over her bones and crawl out of her hole. But I still haave some questions hanging like:1. If Emily coud take over her bones and move things, why did she choose to only do it when the main character join her?2.Where does she get her ghost stuff?3. Emily said she could fly too far away from her bones. How did she fly up into the sky in the end?4. How did Emily change her look after a few days? I guess some questions aren't answered. Like I said, it is ok for me. I bought this book after reading Awkward and Brave. If you ask me, I think Awkward is the most interesting. This is more for teens and I think I just chose a wrong book for me. A little overprised too.

I received it in great condition and pretty fast. I did not enjoy the project I had to do regarding this graphic novel for my Art History college course... I did, however, find the novel to be good anyway. It's definitely one of those coming to age type book, growing up fro experience type of books but in a fictional and illustrated way. The illustrations are really cool and simple in my opinion and demonstrated the emotions and attitudes of the characters very well.
