This is the most important fishing book ever written. We've all heard about big data, well here we have it on a subject dear to our hearts: bass fishing. The author dispels several myths that always sounded "fishy" to begin with, like those regarding moon phases. I could go on and on praising the author's serious statistical efforts (I too am a professional statistician/fishing nut), but as in any early foray into a statistical realm, we can't expect perfection from this statistical pioneer. He acknowledges, but underplays, what he calls "effort bias," (p. 83) i.e., his data shows what fish were caught, but doesn't show how long it took a fisherman took to catch a fish. For example, if a fisherman caught a whopper with a plastic worm, was he fishing all day with that lure, or had he been fishing all day with plugs and caught the fish on his first cast with the worm, etc. He has one source to reduce this bias, when he cleverly gathers additional data about number of boat launches at particular lakes. Oh, and it is surprising how strong his result is on the effects of fishing pressure, that is, how the amount of others fishing reduces your catch. But, JUST BUY THE BOOK.

I was intrigued by the book since I love to bass fish, and I'm somewhat of a statistical geek (I HATE math, but I think statistical analysis can be somewhat fascinating).The book kept enough of my interest that I blew through it in two days. The author goes into detail about his methods of collecting the data, and what the end results where (spoiler alert: soft plastics statistically catch more fish).There's a lot of interesting finds in regards to moon phases, prime fishing hours, lure color selections, effects of sunlight, water clarity, monster bass, etc. In the end, I'm not sure I was completely convinced enough to make any radical changes to my fishing techniques based solely on his findings. However, I'm 55 years old, been bass fishing since I was a kid, I'm admittedly pretty stubborn. That beign said, it's hard to argue with solid data. I think a lot of fishermen out there would find this book worthy of a read.

I have fished seriously for about 20 years and I've read most of what has been written regarding bass fishing. This book is an absolute must read for anyone who is trying to gain a better understanding of fishing. The author has a way of keeping things to the point and doesn't ramble just to sound like an expert which I much appreciated as a reader. It also is not an obvious advertisement for a particular brand of lures or tackle.I would rate it's relevance for the beginning angler up there with the work of Buck Perry and Dr Keith Jones as most beneficial to read.

This book will help you make better decisions and increase your catch rate, even for non-trophy fish. It has been a tremendous help for me in the short time from which I read the book to putting some of the tips and information to use.

I’ve bass fished for over 40 years and have read a lot of bass literature in that time. It’s been quite some time since I’ve really found anything new and enlightened on the subject. Some books may discuss new ideas on how to catch more or bigger fish but usually lack a clear plan of action that you can take to the water and use. “High Percentage Fishin” delivers where other books on the subject don’t. When you finish this book as well as his other book “Lunker Lore” you’ll have new ideas you can take to the water and the results will be more fish in the boat. I highly recommend both of the Authors books. Well worth the read.

If you are looking for a written work the size of Doug Hannon or Bill Murphy's this is not the book for you. This book actually takes many of the best points that are actually contradicting from these experts and makes sense of it all. The book explains facts and eliminates a lot of lore from most people's decision making on when and where it is best to go fishing.

A perspective that many of us miss. We become so focused on are 'Here & Now' and give little concern for a bigger picture of are success. After all, how many of us have invested good money into this sport and satisfied to walk away with one or two fish if given those odds. I like to improve my chances and prefer to have the odds in my favor. I think this book will prove itself.

I haven't fished really since I was a kid. I was on vacation at a lake house in the Adirondacks this past week and I brought my fishing gear. I'm a big believer in researching before doing, so I read this book and low and behold....I caught 3 smallmouth in 45 minutes after following some of the advice/statistics! I can't say 100% it was all due to the book, I didn't ask the fish :). However, I chose my spot on the lake, color, and bait right out of the book.

more like a 4.5 but it's amazing! I would like to warn readers that I am a teenager with no children or siblings who are young enough to appreciate picture books. Additionally I don't babysit that often anymore because I have work. So why did I buy this? I bought this because I need a fairy tale. A tale where the heroine or hero has every negative thing thrown at them but they find the light and overcome. Where the greatest evils are defeated by a greater good. That's what I need. And sometimes children's books and fairy tales provide the most realistic picture of what our life could be like here on earth or to come if we stay good. So my review will mostly be based upon how well it portrays that message.Art: very beautiful, but also dark at some parts. Cinderella's eyes literally look like black sockets sometimes. But it is very beautiful and well done. Some pictures take your breath away.Story: I LOVE IT!!! It is one of my fave!!! I love how cinderella is so strong and brave! She's very kind and sweet yet knows how to stand up for herself. She is the ONLY one who can see the prince and she knows it. And even though she doesn't have as much to offer she does whatever it takes to get what she wants. She's hard-working and I love her. Also it is very romantic how they meetMoral: very good moral. A moral of honesty trumps dishonesty. Hard work will get you what you want. Appearances aren't everything. And my favorite: sometimes the best of what you can do is crappy. But your best is your best and it will work out in the end. LOVE IT!!!Anyway it's a very uplifting story and I would read it. Also shipping is fast!

I bought this book as an extension of the Cinderella story unit that I was teaching to my second graders. This book was an excellent addition to my Cinderella story collection. The students enjoyed this book. At the end of the unit, they are allowed to vote for their favorite story, and they can only vote once. I had 9 students vote for this book as their favorite.It is also a great book to compare/contrast the Disney Cinderella story with. This story is much better. The is a Native American version of Cinderella. It could also be used during a Native American unit when studying their culture. The pictures in this book are beautiful. They also tell part of the story. This book would help with teaching inference.

I first purchased this book with money I had earned when I was either in 2nd or 3rd grade, during a book faire at school.I was into buying my own books back then. I read this book with great enjoyment since it was something I hadpurchased with my own money. Later on in my English class (6th grade) I turned this book into a play script andhad other kids volunteer and play out the story. I got an A+. Alas, the parentals threw away all my stuff after Ijoined the military. I was really sad that among the pictures of my childhood and toys and whatnot,this book among others were lost to me.So glad for sites like Amazon. I was able to buy a brand new one. It is a story that any adult can relate to. Her job for the tribe is to keep the main campfire burning. As a result, over years the floating, hot embers have begun to disfigure and her.she becomes the object of ridicule and abuse from her young peers.The author carries us into tribal legend eloquently, the imagination is hypnotized and the character and the audience are elevated into a wonderful, magical ending.This is a story you will carry well into the future. Incredibly memorable.

From what I know of early modern history, in the first few centuries after the discovery of the New World there was a distinct literary genre of missionaries who acted as proto-anthropologists by narrating the life and customs of native peoples. After the missionaries came the real anthropologists and then, more recently, the activists.Often this genre has suffered not only from exoticism but also contained a good deal of egoism. While continuing in this tradition, the author of The Last Whalers thankfully focuses on the Lamelerans and mostly crops himself out of the picture. While there is some rather mundane philosophizing about the need to preserve a diversity of cultures, most of the book deals with the personalities and mores of this fascinating sliver of humanity.Lamaleran culture revolves around the hunting of whales and so a lot of the work is devoted to blow by blow descriptions of harpooning and the ultimate slaying of these animals. Readers expecting typical anthropological data like rituals, myths and social hierarchies will be mostly disappointed.What one does get is a depiction of a tribe torn between adherence to ancestral ways and the possibilities of modernity. The extent to which one will enjoy this book will vary depending on one’s interest in primitive civilizations—particularly those which are hunter based—and the extent to which one is drawn in by the personal stories the author narrates.Personally, I thought the author has nobly contributed to a somewhat ignoble literary tradition. He has depicted a tribe still caught in a mostly prehistoric way of life without sentimentalizing their personalities or writing a hagiographic account of their way of life.Clearly, the Lamalerans have not had a major effect on world history. But the author succeeds in describing their unique culture to such an extent that a compelling case is made for the need to preserve humankind’s cultural diversity.If descriptions of far-off and completely different civilizations are to one’s liking than the Last Whalers is probably a good choice. If one is prepared for bloody hunting scenes and short shrift given to traditional cultural topics then the extraordinary actions of the author in learning the Lamaleran dialect and living among them for extensive periods will lead to a rather gripping narrative. In short, a unique contribution to ethnography that is written for the public and not just for anthropologists. Well worth reading.

The Last Whalers is an absolutely extraordinary work. Clark’s portrayal of the Lamalerans, a hunter-gatherer tribe inhabiting a remote Indonesian island, is both fascinating and moving. He expertly shows how the Lamalerans hunt the largest carnivore in history, the sperm whale, using centuries-old technology. By having lived amongst the tribe across three years, the author is able to describe the hunts in stunning and dramatic detail, with the insight of someone intimately familiar with not only the mechanics of the process, but also the history, culture, and people of Lamalera.The stories of the Lamalerans themselves are even more gripping--from a young orphaned whaler waiting for his big break to an aging legendary harpooner struggling to understand his son’s resistance to the traditional way of life. They bravely stand up to the forces of modernization, largely refusing modern technology that would make the hunts easier and far less dangerous, and relying on bartering and gift-giving instead of paper currency. They hold on to the ways of their ancestors, believing that their tradition--however inconvenient--contains their essence, and that by giving it up, they may lose what it means for them to live.The Last Whalers reminds us to consider what we may be losing as we welcome the latest technology and conveniences with open arms. A true accomplishment.

The Last Whalers often reads like a novel as individual villagers share their lives. This a a book about people whose traditional way of life is hanging on by a finger nail. Modern methods of whale and manta ray fishing have almost overcome the practices of centuries. Spiritual beliefs wither away but have not quite expired. These isolated villages on islands in the Sunda Sea are now a part of today's world. This carefully researched book memorializes them and their inhabitants.

This book is completely worth reading--paticularly if you enjoy post-apocolyptic stories. The first half of this book is an amazing-but-brutal page-turner. The characters (even the worst of the antagonists) are fascinating--and it is a breath of fresh air to read well-written female characters. Unfortunately, second half of the bom loses momentum with too many plot devices, overly used zombie movie tropes and an ending that wrapped up too quickly and neatly. It felt like it was originally intended to be an ironic short story, but the author decided to lengthen it and devoted a lot more time to the beginning of the book than the end.

I have long been a fan of M.R. Carey - I loved his Felix Castor series (The Naming of the Beasts: A Felix Castor Novel), and I was swept up in the genius storytelling of The House of War and Witness. I was similarly impressed with _The Girl With All The Gifts_.Carey has taken a real biological organism (the parasitic fungus cordyceps which highjacks the nervous system of its host, typical ants) and imagined what would happen if this fungus jumped the species barrier and was able to infect humans. The result is a pandemic of apocalyptic proportions as most of humankind is infected, those who remain attempting to not become infected themselves while seeking a vaccine.It is difficult to write about the plot without spoiling the story, so I will err on the side of being vague. The story is a bit confusing initially, as it is told from the perspective of Melanie (the girl with all the gifts.) Finding out what those gifts are, and how they are important to the plot is a large part of the story itself, and a large part of the fun of reading it. Besides the brilliance of the concept of the story, I particularly enjoyed the constant changes in perspectives between characters giving readers an opportunity to see and understand their motivations and world-views. Carey also does a tremendous job of creating and building tension as the plot moves forward, although (as with many of his other books), there is an element of the bitter-sweet in its resolution.For those unfamiliar with this author, I recommend _The House of War and Witness_ first (only out of personal preference) before reading _the Girl With All the Gifts_; that said, this is a fantastic piece of dystopic science fiction.

I have a confession to make. I’m done with zombie stories. Every plot has been written multiple times. Every angle has been explored. There is simply nothing new to be told. Or so I thought before reading The Girl with All the Gifts.To say too much about the plot would be to deprive unsuspecting readers some spectacular plot twists. But, in the interest of not being entirely unhelpful, here goes. Six year old Melanie is a genius. She reads the classics, performs Calculus, and quotes Greek literature. Her favorite teacher, Miss Justineau, adores Melanie above the other students in a very unique class. For each day, Sergeant and other hardened soldiers roll Melanie and her classmates into class strapped helplessly into wheel chairs. No one ever touches the children, or gets too close to their teeth, or releases their bonds in the presence of adults. Why? Melanie doesn’t know at first, but gradually learns of the undead “hungries” that have killed the world outside of the school. That world seems so far away … until it crashes in on the school and destroys it. What follows is a frenetic journey of self-discovery and survival as Melanie, Miss Justineau, and Sergeant attempt to survive a brutal outside world. For the truth about Melanie and the danger she poses to those she loves most becomes the girl’s most difficult lesson yet.This novel has everything – everything – I look for in a story. Compelling characters you cannot simply classify as good or bad who soldier on with hope despite a hopeless situation. Twists and turns galore – some you see coming and some you don’t. And best of all, an ending that you don’t see coming, but when it does, you know it is perfect.Five enthusiastic stars for this novel … and I would give it six if I could. Just read it, okay. You can thank me later.

I wasn't able to finish it.Spoilers... Zombies are already a tired concept and this book does nothing to change that. If you're looking for a classic horror concept with a twist check out "Passage" by Justin Cronin instead.

There are lots of zombie stories but this is the first time I read such a developed story, in line with scientific explanations for the origin of the zombies.The story starts at a military base where the psychological aspects, needs and conflicts of the characters are first introduced. Then as the story progress we see much more interaction and development. The characters are multi dimensional and have realistic motives for their behaviors. The ending was unexpected, not what I hoped for, but still a fine ending. It was great and compelling.There were a couple of things that didn't make much sense in my opinion and few parts that got dull.How did Helen open Dr cabwell buzz door?How come they ate food 20 years expired without feeling sick?How can a military research station not know what is going on outside their walls? They only found out about the development of the mature fungus once they were outside the base.How can Melanie feel hunger. Hungries don't feel hungry or need food. They just eat when prompted by a stimulus. Otherwise they can stand still for years without food. On the other hand Melanie feels hunger and can control herself instead of following the pathogen orders. Probably she still had some control over her brain and hence felt hunger as a human is supposed to do. Still, I am not sure it makes full sense.Melanie seems at times a child and sometimes a badass grown woman.

Arnaud Maillet's study of the Claude Glass was informative and insightful in the main. As an artist and geometer I found all of the information contained in the book of great interest and instructive. As one who has of late been studying the subject of reflections and mirrors in general, as well as applications to the nuero-visual and geometric, this filled an improtant gap in my knowledge. It may not be a perfectly organized study but it is the only one I am aware of in English. It had the effect of my creating my own Claude Glass with a converse clock face glass cover and enamel black paint sprayed on the back. I have been enjoying experimentation with it since and will no doubt employ it in some art work. Any book that prompts one to use the information inside is a book worthy of reading I think. It seemed to cover the various areas of the subject; It's developement and history, occult use for scrying, as a device for reducing an image and also foraccessing the tonal values. I doubt I would require another book on the subject after reading and studying this one.

This is an intriguing but occasionally obtuse text that attempts to locate deep cultural meaning implied in the black mirror's disturbing and sometimes contradictory symbolism.

A beautiful, interesting book on the subject of the use of dark mirrors in magic practices and as a visual, reflective tool in artistic image making for the old master painters of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Made me want to buy my own obsidian magic mirror! Nice photo illustrations. Book received in fine condition.

The "Claude Glass" sounds like a very interesting topic, but the handling of this topic by the author A. Maillet is out of the limits of professional academic research. The very short chapters filled with heterogeneous thesis and arbitrary pictures and diagrams evade a clear art-historian or philosophical approach of the Claude Glasse's use for artists in the 18th century. The first interesting thesis, that you expect normally in the introduction, is presented on page 163 (of 221 pages main-Text): "The Claude Mirror... is... an apparatus that enables one to transpose reality into a melodious harmony." In the internet you find articles that give you more insight for free.
