This is a helpful compilation of frameworks and will be helpful for consulting interview prep, strategy courses, and even business managers. However, the booklet is riddled with distracting type-o’s and formatting issues that diminish the legitimacy of the content.

Great book with condensed information. Finished the book within 2 hours, but will have to use at least 2 days to digest the information completely.

It’s a good start if you want to have an overview of the main tools used by business consultants. Direct to the point.

About the Author

William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England’s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children—an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare’s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare’s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.Barbara A. Mowat is Director of Research emerita at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Consulting Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly, and author of The Dramaturgy of Shakespeare’s Romances and of essays on Shakespeare’s plays and their editing.Paul Werstine is Professor of English at the Graduate School and at King’s University College at Western University. He is a general editor of the New Variorum Shakespeare and author of Early Modern Playhouse Manuscripts and the Editing of Shakespeare and of many papers and articles on the printing and editing of Shakespeare’s plays.

Picking up tis play to read I knew absolutley nothing about it other than having heard it's name. I have to say I am glad I took a chance on the unknown because this play was truly a pleasure to read. Once I got used to the English used in it reading it became almost melodic in my head. There is no doubt Shakespeare knew how to make words dance. This play almost feels like it should be two separate plays since they are so very different in feel. The first half a tragedy and the sequel a romance. I feel like Shakespeare wrote this play as sort of an homage to the Greek classics. if that was his intent, then I have to say he succeeded very well indeed. I loved that even with all the flowery language (multiple times requiring me to look up words) he quickly managed to start the film projector in my head I was seeing the action happening in my head. Truly a classic and I am so thrilled that my first foray into Shakespeare unknown to me was such a resounding success!!

This is one of Shakespeare's most powerful, and state of the art plays, yet it is still inadequately known and performed. His haunting portrayal of a charismatic political outsider, a man riven by a river of self-hatreds and insecurities and just as contemptuous of the mob as he is of the political elite who use him for their own purposes, is just as relevant today as in the 16th century, in the shadow of Essex. The book's introduction, by Jonathan Crewe is first rate in understanding both the play and the character of Coriolanus, and I recommend this play for anyone wishing to get his or her feet wet in learning about Shakespeare's tragedies.

Perhaps (?) not among the best known of Shakespeare's works, this play partakes of his ironic and tragic celebration of Roman ideals, namely, "laus", "gloria", "virtus" in particular. The aristocracy of Coriolanus' Rome "appears" dedicated to high-sounding and noble ends - Roman: honour, bravery, valour, proper governance. The governance is presented as "organic" and therefore just. Pleasure is significantly absent from this universe. Continuation as concept and even mere consequences - are best left out of sight. The character of Volumnia devalues what would be "feminine" ends in the language and imagery "she" uses, a deathly and mechanistic language used to describe her son. Marilyn French has seen similarities between Coriolanus-the-character and another notorious misanthrope, Timon of Athens: the search for honor, fame and the attempt to act according to socially accepted rules moves on to a quest for self-exaltation. Without firm rooting in the community - yet while using this very community - there is only the self, and the self cannot provide its own end. One editor having noted that the adjective "alone" occurs more often in Coriolanus than in any other play by Shakespeare, the isolation the eponymous character finds himself in is typical, as it were, of an opposition found between those heroes embodying the "chivalric" as opposed to the "heroic" or "Herculean" ideal (Antony, Coriolanus, Achilles in Troilus and Cressida.) But Hercules is a demi-god: the characters are not; punishment of hubris - Coriolanus' bravery leads to extreme arrogance, as he sets himself above all men - means banishment, isolation, and death.

Coriolanus is not --never has been -- one of my favorites of Shakespeare's works. But the volume under review is in the Arden 3rd series and I've slowly been working my way through the 3rd series volumes as they appear. I'm more than pleased to have read this new treatment of Coriolanus: the editor has done an outstanding job of providing historical context for the play, carefully comparing it to the treatment of the story given in Shakespeare's sources. The editorial machinery carefully adheres to the Arden series standards, explaining how other editions have dealt with textual problems, and providing cogent arguments for the choices made in this edition. I've even come to like the play better. Highly recommended.

The Winter's Tale (New Cambridge Shakespeare)Another crappy formatting job by Cambridge University Press. In order to read the play without insane and seemingly random line breaks, you have to set the font at its smallest size. When it's extremely hard to read. I checked it against Macbeth, in the same series. Macbeth is fine.So for an extra five bucks, you get a practically unreadable text. Nice job Cambridge. Nice job Amazon.

#90 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I have reviewed a number of books regarding the Trump Administration. A few of them were positive towards the President, but, frankly, most have been critical. Some, perhaps, over the top critical, but, in my opinion, “Fear” and “Fifth Risk” were about as fair to Mr. Trump as any objective investigation could be. With “The Threat” by Andrew G. McCabe, I expected an explosive ‘tell-all’ blockbuster that would equal in fury most of the other anti-Trump works, but that would be more partisan. Read on to learn what I learned and why I was surprised by McCabe.BLUSH FACTOR: One would expect, given what we have learned about the mannerisms of the occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, to find the book riddled with eff words. However, there is only a single such utterance (page 39) and it is not spoken by Pres. Trump or McCabe. Nor are there any other profanities, so, if caution is exercised, this could be suitable for reading in your prayer group or to most anyone else.WRITING & EDITING: Frankly, the writing is a little tedious. The opening chapter, in fact, is simply boring. After that, though, the pace picks up a bit and one will find some interesting bits (not directly related to Donald J. Trump, Vladimir Putin or politics btw) regarding the early days of the Russian Mafia’s entry into the America. But be patient, because there IS a reason these bits play a significant role.I don’t want to give any spoilers, but I chose the excerpt that I did, to illustrate what I believe is at the root of Mueller’s investigation. Pres. Trump decries the investigation as a witch hunt and people keep wondering if a smoking gun will be found, connecting Trump to Putin. In reality, I realized upon reading “The Threat,” that the real fear for Trump might be that a connection be found connecting Trump to Russian organized crime, possibly in connection with organized crime in Israel (Benjamin Netanyahu).EXCERPT:‘…Vadim Thomas, one of the best investigators on our squad, pitched the figure-skating case to the Southern District of New York—known as the Sovereign District of New York, because the U.S. attorney’s office there has a lot of power and does not shy from using it creatively. Tokhtakhounov was indicted and arrested by Italian police on charges of conspiracy to rig the competition. For months the FBI worked with the Italians and with Interpol to get him extradited. Before long, word came to the squad that a Russian oligarch had pledged two hundred million dollars to get Tokhtakhounov out of jail. Next thing we knew, his release was ordered by the Italian Supreme Court. He was gone, in the wind, back to Russia, where he has been living openly. (And from there, he allegedly continued to run criminal enterprises in the United States. In 2013, Tokhtakhounov was indicted for money laundering in connection with an illegal gambling ring that operated out of Trump Tower. Several months after this indictment, Tokhtakhounov was a VIP guest at Donald Trump’s Miss Universe contest in Moscow.) We’ve never had a chance to get him again. In the scheme of things, the evident corruption behind a figure-skating medal may seem trivial. But for me and for a lot of guys on our squad, this was a critical turn of events. One of our worst fears was that the top tier of the vory v zakone would use money to undermine Western institutions in which many millions of Americans have reflexive faith. That fear had now been realized, and we asked ourselves what institutions might be next, and we asked whether any American public official might be susceptible to a two-hundred-million-dollar bribe, and we asked whether democracy itself might become a target…’McCabe, Andrew G.. The Threat (p. 51). St. Martin's Press. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINEIt was difficult to give a positive rating, for several reasons. At last, though, I did so because it is not what I expected – it is not a tell-all vendetta against Donald J. Trump. It is, rather, steeped with factual intelligence that a few investigators will likely find key to understanding what is likely to come from the Mueller Investigation. Despite the advance publicity, this is not a book about President Trump. It is a book about national security and how the 37000 members of the FBI (and the rest of the intelligence community) painstakingly work to keep Americans safe from threats, both foreign and domestic. That the president of the United States now poses a threat to national security, per the FBI leadership's assessment in May 2017, introduces a crisis that our country has never experienced before. This is nothing like Watergate.McCabe's first chapter is an FBI agent's "take" on biographical information, introducing us to the routine reports they file--the 302's--and for this, he writes a 302 about himself as an FBI interviewer might have recorded it 27 years ago when he first joined the FBI. As with other examples of the FBI agents at work, it is surprisingly interesting. After that, he gets to the subject matter that most people will be reading "The Threat" for--Donald Trump. In this case, it is his first meeting with Trump, at 6:30 p.m. in the Oval Office, on May 9th, the day that James Comey was fired. (Of course, I read all the parts about the Trump-Russia investigation first. But then I went back to all the rest, McCabe's training at Quantico, his first assignment at SDNY (not what I was picturing for that work environment), and his many years going after the new mobsters in America--not Italian-run crime, but Russian. They are, per McCabe, very different, and his description of his work was quite fascinating. Then there was 9/11--he had just been chewed out on a case in Florida and was expecting more of the same when he got the call--and his experiences with FBI directors Louis Freeh and Bob Mueller. This is good reading, and underscored two things for me: (1) intelligence agents are disciplined professionals with a strong work ethic and an impressive attention to detail (i.e. the opposite of President Trump) and (2) when McCabe--and Comey--say Trump reminds them of a mob boss, it's not like the rest of us saying it. They're not talking about mobsters they've seen on television or in movies. They know--from extensive contact as investigators or prosecutors--exactly what that means. They are choosing their words carefully and They. Know. I hope people will read -all- this book. Like Comey, McCabe does a great deal to remind us of what the FBI does for us--not fault-free, but it is a disgrace to call them crooks and liars.)Like Comey's memoir, McCabe--the trained FBI professional--has an eye for detail that reveals character. He notes, for example, that while other presidents had officials sit in the comfortable chairs or couches in the Oval Office, Trump's stagecraft is designed to emphasize his superiority and importance, and make others feel diminished and uncomfortable. Trump--a tall large presence--sits hulkingly behind the imposing Resolute desk while the officials there at his request are told to sit on small wooden chairs lined up in front of him. It is a power play, and Trump continues it in every encounter, one way or the other (usually, it's by his non-stop talking on topics that are often unrelated to the subject at hand, and often repeating himself.)McCabe, like Comey, observes how Trump gives his version of the truth--with the goal of having his listener agree with him and take Trump's view of reality as his own. At this first meeting, that means badgering McCabe over and over with the message that Comey was a terrible director, people hated him, everyone's thanking Trump for getting rid of him, and so on.This will be a pattern often repeated--the leader force feeding a false narrative as part of a loyalty ritual. McCabe, trying to be nonconfrontational throughout the meeting, does contradict this and points out that Comey was, by and large, widely admired and respected and many people are shocked and depressed by his abrupt dismissal. (There seems little doubt that the reason for it was not "Clinton's email" as Rosenstein wrote, but the Russia investigation.) Trump even --shockingly--invites Russians to the Oval for the first time since 2014, secretly has the ambassador there, and bans U.S. media and advisors as he tells them Comey was a "nutjob" and gives them top secret intelligence that divulges sources and methods. (Americans only learn about this meeting from photos from the RUSSIAN Foreign Ministry.)McCabe describes the chaos that this firing causes at DOJ as they scramble to protect the country from a president who seems to -possibly- be a Russian asset or agent. What to do about such a shocking possibility? McCabe--showing great courage--takes the risk of opening a counterintelligence (espionage) investigation against the president, as well as an obstruction of justice one. This could easily blow up in his face.He wants a special counsel but Rosenstein, the Acting AG in terms of Russia (Sessions is recused), isn't sure. Whether McCabe's urging, Comey's release of a memo to the NYT about Trump telling him to "let the investigation of Flynn go", sitting in on Trump's interview of Mueller for a possible FBI director (one can easily imagine how this was NOT a meeting of styles or minds), or something completely different--Rosenstein also shows great courage and names Mueller as special counsel the following day, not asking the White House, and only telling them and the AG (who comes across as a racist, incompetent dolt) a half hour notice before going public. This, too, took guts.McCabe further earns Trump's ire the following day by telling the House committee that, contrary to Trump, the FBI director was much admired and is greatly missed. But, as we learned from Comey's memoir (and McCabe already knew), Trump has had it in for him for years, back to the campaign. McCabe's "sin"? While he's a Republican (like Comey and Rosenstein), his wife is a Democrat, an ER pediatrician and, at Governor McAuliffe's urging, she ran for state senate in Virginia. Believing she would be a great state senator, McAuliffe had his PAC donate to her campaign..This is the original sin for Trump. McAuliffe is a friend of Bill and Hillary Clinton!!! How dare McCabe's wife know a friend of the Clintons' and have help from him for her campaign? (She had no contact with the Clintons in any way and they never donated to her--probably had no idea who she was.) This is the kind of loyalty Trump demands from people who work in government--very personal loyalty to him (not to any ideas or values, just to the man himself). That is, as McCabe points out, very disturbing, given the historic importance of the independence of the DOJ (J. Edgar Hoover showed what could go wrong--disastrously.) Trump, a man with no interest in history and little intellectual curiosity about anything not on television--including his Presidential Daily Brief--cares about two things: (1) getting his way and (2) being surrounded by sycophants. It's no wonder, reading "The Threat", that last week there were leaks from intelligence briefers chafing at being told they could not tell Trump anything that differed from what he said to the public. That level of willful incompetence in a U.S. president is shocking and should be brought out in public hearings--as should many other things in this book (the idea that he didn't believe what intelligence said about Kim having nukes--instead choosing to "believe what Putin tells me.")Robert Mueller will have a report some day and hopefully the new Attorney General (someone Trump clearly has brought in with the hopes Barr will protect him and be the loyalist he felt Sessions wasn't) will let Americans see it. The truth needs to come out, whatever it is and wherever it leads.

I wanted to read this book. I don't know much about the inner workings of the FBI and I knew this would explain a lot. It tells McCabe's own personal story and tells us just how the FBI works. The tall tales that trump tells about Mueller, Comey and McCabe are refuted easily by this book. Knowing about the people who work there and the way they do things you will find that the idea of three Republican career FBI men being involved in a plot against the man in the White House is ludicrous. You would be just as concerned as they were and just as alarmed.McCabe tells his own story as well as many details of working at the FBI. It's fascinating stuff. I came away proud of Andrew McCabe for coming forward despite all the horrible, raging tweets he will get from the WH. McCabe is an American hero. What he did with this book was to tell his story and that of the Bureau. I hope people come to realize that it isn't McCabe who is lying. If you aren't as scared as I am, you aren't paying attention. Thank you Andrew McCabe for an excellent book.

"New York a place where a man came with what is new and the see something new."West Point was the only College pre-Civil War that taught civil engineering.West Point was not only preparing men for war but on how to fully grow society. The civil engineer curriculum at West Point had a lot of opposition because some people thought men only needed to know military strategy. But when Sylvanus Thayer was put in charge he made sure the men knew how to build fortresses, remove their sewage, have an understanding of bridges. Many men had great careers once leaving the army because America was starting to really grow. This book focuses on a few of the men that went to New York City.  This book does not get into the nitty-gritty of engineering but shows how West Point prepared the men to be organized enough to lead large groups of workers, to ignore politics (some of the men had broke from the union for fight for their southern homeland during the Civil War, only to be reunited with fellow West Point graduates to build and shape cities), and to having the determination to complete the job.  New York City post Civil War was a growing metropolis with lots of industry and ideas. They did great earthwork projects by clearing the river of rock for easier navigation, found ways to get enough water in reservoirs to service the city, built large bridges across the rivers, started a subway system and worked on the sanitation problem of having so many people in a small area. Like most books by a college press, this may be a little dry for a casual reader. But to anyone who enjoys history, military history, NYC, or early civil engineering this book will be quite enjoyable.  Also if you listen to the audiobook, Kamish has a very conversational tone, and actually makes the book very enjoyable with his narration.

A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com'Although the story of how West Point provided the bulk of the engineers who built America in the nineteenth century is well known, Prof. Logel (Naval War College), points out that their role in the rise of New York is not only far less celebrated, but is also perhaps their most important contribution to the new nation. Logel opens with a fairly detailed look at the West Point curriculum in the sciences and engineering, and how USMA-trained engineers not only built much of America’s infrastructure, but were also the founders of engineering as a profession in the new nation. He then goes on to trace the influence of Academy graduates on New York; mapping the geological foundation, developing the now famous rigid street grid, the Erie Canal, the Croton water system, and so forth through the Brooklyn Bridge, improvements to navigation, and much more, and also following how some of these men brought their organizational skills to important administrative posts, such as Commissioner of Police or of Docks, along the way not only turning New York into the nation’s economic power house, but also laying the basis for several professional organizations and learned societies. Logel points out that the officers involved, some famous – George B. McClellan, Henry Slocum, FitzJohn Porter – and some not – Egbert Viele, George Greene – went to the city for different reasons, some for the professional opportunities involved, while others, such as McClellan or Porter, for personal vindication. Logel touches on municipal politics, veterans’ affairs, Tammany Hall, immigration, and much more. Although technical details on some of the engineering feats are sparse, and the book could use some better maps, this is a good read for those interested in the history of West Point, the professional in American society, or the history of New York. civil-engineering, west-point, progress, nycI was only expecting an interesting doctoral thesis, but this is a history geek's delight! How many civilians bother to wonder about the curricula of West Point beyond the military stuff? Once challenged, it is obvious that civil engineering would be mandatory both for war involvement and reconstruction. And what do graduates do after military service? They insert their knowledge into infrastructure. In the time and place of this study we are talking mostly about things like Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Bridge, just to name my favorites. The exploration of the impact of graduates upon the structure of NYC in the 19th century is well organized and also clearly informative to several kinds of geeks. Like me.I was fortunate to have my request for an audio copy filled in a giveaway, but it is definitely worth paying for.Mark Kamish does really well as narrator in that his voice is pleasant, speech clearly understandable, and cadence smooth.

I don't hand out five-star reviews lightly, but this is a really good read (listen). This book has everything going for it. It is incredibly interesting, even if you don't find the subject matter instantly appealing. I found myself drawn into the story. There is history, science, engineering, and so much more. It speaks to what happened behind the scenes, how it affected the future, and gave me so much insight into West Point and New York and things I hadn't even thought to wonder about before picking up this excellent book. The narration was also stellar. I highly recommend this book to anyone!I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left my honest review. The free copy did not influence my review in any way.

One of the most interesting and thouroughly researched recap of the development of NYC. Great read!

Quirky QWERTY: A Note on the Type by Torbjörn Lundmark was a short book about the history of the typewriter and the keys found on it. Note that the subtitle on the front cover is different from what is on the formal title page (which is the subtitle that counts). Lundmark provided very brief histories about each of the twenty-six letters of the alphabet as well as other typewriter keys, and I was surprised to learn that many of them evolved from Egyptian hieroglyphics. However, in the introduction, Lundmark provided the caveat that:"This is not a scientific work. In fact, nothing in this book can be said to be absolutely true. Even if it were a scientific book this fact would not change. Scholars still argue about the origins of the alphabet and what the letters signify, and why the numbers look the way they do, and how all the other characters that appear in these pages came about."So after I read that, I thought gee thanks. Now I don't know if what I just read is true or not. But this pocketbook of 172 pages was stylized to be a fun and visual read, not a scientific one. Nevertheless, Lundmark did ask a relevant question at the beginning:"In our modern times of computers and electronics rather than mechanics, why haven't keyboards reverted to alphabetical order? There is no reason to worry about sticky type-bars anymore. So, why are we still stuck with the QWERTY keyboard?"And the answer is simple: it is easier to stick to old standards than to invent new ways. The author did provide illustrations of five alternative keyboards so one could compare the supposed ease in typing.Writing did not start out with both capital and lower case letters. Capitals existed at first, and were designed to be blocky and angular to make them easier to chisel into rock such as granite. However as writing surfaces developed, such as papyrus, scribes found it a lot easier to create a cursive style that flowed because the angles and edges found on capitals tore the leaves. Reducing the number of features found on capitals, such as B becoming b and R becoming r made the writing experience easier and faster. Hence the birth of both the lower case and cursive writing.I found the origin of the terms "upper case" and "lower case" to be most interesting:"'Upper-case' and 'lower-case' are printer's terms. The typographer's job was to fit individual pieces of type, cast in metal, into a wooden frame to make up the text of a newspaper column or a page of a book. Each letter was picked up by hand and placed into the frame."The metal type was kept on two trays, or cases, one above the other. The lower case held the minuscule type, which was used more frequently, and the upper case contained the capital letters, which were used less often."Symbols were discussed as well, however the 2002 publication date preceded the advent of Twitter, thus there is no mention of the networking site when discussing the various functions for the # symbol.

This book manages to include, in one little package, material about the history of the letters of the alphabet, the history of the typewriter and its odd keyboard arrangement (as well as other proposed keyboards), the computer codings for various characters, and more. How the author managed such a great information density without becoming unreadable amazes me.If you have _any_ curiosity about our alphabet, typewriters, or anything related to these, you should read this book.

And you thought that the alphabet is only 26 simple letters. Torbjorn Lundmark, a true hybrid Swede living in Australia with a background in lingustics, and is also an illustrator and cartoonist has taken a well trodden road and made it accessible. Over 170 pages, he deconstructs the development of the typewriter (which may sound dull, but is quite interesting) and reviews not only the 26 letters, but all the supporting punctuation. The history of each letter and where it was born, stolen and reintegrated (usually after some modifications) are little mini odyssey's. The @ symbol was almost extinct until Ray Tomlinson used it to link names to server addresses. There is a very extensive reference section for more exploration. I would highly recommend this book for experienced designers and novices alike.

I'm sure many people will find this quirkful and querulous, but the bulk of this book has very little to do with keyboards! The part that does is quite interesting.Starting on page 20, the author switches from a discussion of keyboards to a history of the alphabet and various symbols.Quackish titling if you ask me!
