I think this book could be the new greatest book of all time! My kids loved the book though it is qiute intense. So much happens. All I can say is that you just have to read it.

My niece is intrigued with the war and was glued to this story. She is 10 and understood and could not put it down.

My son got this from his book fair and really wanted me to read it. It was a decent historical fiction novel about a 12 year old boy who escapes from a slave labor camp and then goes on to join a Ukrainian underground group.It was interesting to read about a part of WWII that I didn't know much about. The book is written in fairly simple language but was engaging and interesting.Overall this was a well done historical fiction novel about a part of WWII that I didn’t know much about. I would recommend to middle grade aged readers who are interesting in WWII. I wouldn’t really recommend for adults because the story and language are very simple.

If you are a fan of some of the world's most notable photographs, buy this book.Comments? I can only echo some of the reviews already written about this important book, such as the review written by Vladimir Belomestnov and Damon Webster.This is an amazing book, less for the quality of the photographs (Which are remarkable and marvelous!) than for what the author Mr. Szarkowski painstakingly wrote about each photograph.John Szarkowski's brief essay about each photograph truly opened my eyes to the subject photograph. First, I would look at a particular photograph in an effort to see what made the photo outstanding. Next, I would read John Szarkowski's discussion of the piece, and I would see aspects of the photograph that I had not previously seen.Great book.

"The critic's job is to place the particular example in the larger context." This book is a brilliant example. Szarkowski here lovingly selects one photograph from each of 100 photographers -- 100 photos from the MOMA collection -- to illustrate the serpentine history of photography. Some of the photos are extraordinary, others are mundane, but so is the chaotic field of photography. This handsome book hints at the depth and breadth of the solutions to the question of what is significant in pictures. I have poured over this book again and again. I have lent it to friends. I discover surprises every time I open it. You can read this book for the perceptive essays or you can just look at the pictures. This book satisfies on both counts.

"The Online Photographer" tipped me off to this excellent book, and boy were they right.This book discusses 100 photographers (100 shots with no artist twice). They are in approximately chronological order. The author discusses why the shots are the way they are in terms of technological limits, expectations/assumptions/conventions of the time, and composition; though not often all three for a single photo.Following up on each photographer via wikipedia and image search was my roll-my-own version of a History of Photography. (but only up to 1969, which is the date of the last photo in this book.)When I started, I didn't know that this was what I wanted, but it was.

This is a scholarly work by Szarkowski which makes engaging and insightful reading. Each page is prefaced by a short essay, most of which relate directly to the image. Occasionally Szarkowski's narrative seems to veer from the topic, as if he has trouble in identifying what he has to say about the image. That critism aside, and it is a minor one, this book provides a marvellous insight into the creative photogaphic process, and has no real peers. The style contrasts sharply with that of Szarkowski's other, earlier work - The Photographer's Eye. Both extend our understanding and knowledge of art. The quality of reproduction is also good.

A survey of the MOMA's photography collection explores the evolution of the photographic medium using specific examples to illustrate its development. Szarkowski investigates the aesthetic, formal, social and historical issues of 100 photographs selected from the Modern's collections.

I was totally captivated by the photo on the cover when I visited a local library and was browsing. This book has a wonderful selection of iconic photos and information about them.

One page of text, and an adjoining page with an excellent reproduction of the subject photograph. The text is by John S; the photos are by the best photographers. John describes how each photographer and photograph is unique. You want to take your time with this one - I'm reading it slowly, one photo per day, and enjoying the visions and inspiration.

I also came to know of this book from Mike Johnston's "The Online Photographer" blog. Reading this book is like having a personal non-hurried guided tour of 100 significant works at MOMA by an expert curator.The subjects of the discussion of each image is not identical for each one. In most discussions we learn about the history of the photographer. More words are probably used to discuss each photographer's history than anything else. The curator's discussion of why the image is significant, why it works etc, is less even with some images getting a greater discussion about this than others.If indeed I had had a long private tour of these images with Mr. Szarkowski I would have asked more questions about why the individual images "worked" than what the author covered in his discussions. OTOH, since I'm somewhat lazy about visiting museums (and I live in NYC!) reading this book is equal or better than a long day trip to the museum. I certainly came away knowing more than when I started this book.

while i did order the cheepest used one the slip on cover was torn. tape fixed that right up. i found no other problems with this highly informative book and an injoying it thourghly

It's ok for learning how to draw the folds in characters clothes, but you will only benefit from drawing girl characters. This book is 99% based on women characters, which is ok, but, I think one would benefit more if they had more men in it. I'm not to crazy about the character designs, but I do like that you get to see how the clothing would fit if you were sitting or standing a specific way. The book consists mainly of underwear and sleep wear, which is fine if you want to draw something like that in your manga. All in all, If you are looking for a book that gives you a run down of both sex's in their clothes, then I do not recommend this book. If you are ok with the book being mainly women, then this is a good book for practicing on your folds in clothing.

First let me state that this book is primarily for intermediates and up. This book is definately not for those of you looking to be pulled by the hand (nor for that matter are most of the How To Draw Manga books). They expect you to be observant and learn from the visuals given so even beginners can pick up this book and learn the basic THEORIES of folds as it only briefly touches on drawing the folds.If you're looking for a wide variety of clothes, this also isn't for you; however, it does explain the different lengths and shapes that clothes can take and you can merely crop the pants to make shorts and the same for skirts.If you can draw clothes (or you plan on getting the HTDM: Costume Encyclopedia set) and can apply the theories of this book to them, then this is definately for you. With all poses and clothes you can expect to see multiple views to show the differences in folds between different perspectives.Be warned though, if you aren't looking to see underwear, with the majority being females', don't complain when you buy this book.All in all this is a great book that will definately aid in your progression as a manga artist.

...you're looking to depict your characters primarily in one set of pants, a skirt, one loose shirt and a leather jacket...and only if they're female. I bought this book thinking it had more information on how to draw clothing in general (folds, drapes, wrinkles) but the book only very lightly touches on that subject for about two pages in the beginning of the book. It's predominantly a "pose file" and there are other much better pose file books you can find.A lot of the "How to Draw Manga" books seem to assume you're already an artist of some skill and training, so this book is definitely not for beginners. If you're the type that can learn by sight alone, by all means, give it a try. Otehrwise I'd suggest going with a more basic instructional.

Most people are complaining that the book is about drawing girls in underwear. (Granted, what book isn't?) But it's also good for seeing how a movement changes the entire model. There are many good angles that most people don't think to draw. Like all tools, it's in how you use it.

Uh, a very detailed under garment section, with the rest of the book lacking slightly. There are pages of different versions of bras and underwear, but no help on drawing actual skirts, no step by step guides, just a picture that you observe and copy from. It was alright, definately helpful, just not extremely helpful.

Very nice stickers. However, many of the birds are never seen by those of us who live west of the Rockies. It's frustrating for a child to receive something like this, try to use it to identify birds around them, and fail. Please, publishers, there is a large market in the West of outdoor-oriented people who would love something like this!

My granddaughter loved this. She has a lot of birds in her backyard so she could watch and try to match up the stickers with the birds she saw. She cheated a little but, hey, she learned something and had fun. She is 5.

The stamps are great and my grandchildren, ages 5 and 4 years, love using them. We bird watch and use these stickers in their bird watching journals and when crafting. I just wish there were more, but I like them and will buy again for other paper crafting or" decorating " as my granddaughter calls it.

Stickers were colorful. I am sure my grandson will enjoy using them to identify the birds he sees. Great way for young or new bird watchers to see what the birds look like clearly.

About the Author

JOHN BREGLIO (New York City) has spent over three decades working in all sectors of the entertainment industry, including theatre, motion pictures, publishing, and music. As an entertainment lawyer, he was instrumental in helping his clients to produce and finance plays, musicals, and films for nearly four decades. In 2008, he retired from his law practice and since then has been producing plays, musicals, and films independently, including the critically acclaimed revival of A Chorus Line and Dreamgirls. Breglio has served as chair of the Theatre Development Fund and has sat on the boards of the American Foundation for AIDS Research, the Alliance for the Arts, the John Golden Fund, and Young Playwrights. He has also lectured frequently for the National Law Journal Seminars, the Practicing Law Institute, and at Yale University and Columbia University School of the Arts, where he has taught a graduate course on theatre and the law. In 2005, he received the Actors' Fund Medal of Honour, and he has been recognised for his contributions to the theatrical community by the Public Theatre, the National Corporate Theatre Fund, and Cherry Lane Theatre.

A combination of B'way advice and stories from the trenches from an entertainment lawyer/B'way producer. Breglio walks the reader through the many, many steps of becoming a producer, from identifying source material to Opening Night, all with anecdotes and asides about his own experiences with some of B'way's biggest names (he doesn't really dish any dirt, but sometimes what's unsaid says it all). He also explains clearly some of the questions I've had about how various parts of the theatre business work (in full disclosure, I've produced one B'way show and invested in numerous others, but don't know the author).

Speaking from his decades of experience as a theatrical and entertainment attorney and his more recent experience as a Broadway producer, he opens up the kimono to talk in real terms about how the business end of theater really works. Or Get Killed"!The author offers enough technical detail about contracts and negotiations to be useful without becoming pedantic. He spices up the technical talk with vignettes from real shows he has represented or produced, and the complexities involved in balancing financial considerations with managing strong personalities. As a broadway producer, I can attest how great this book is. I've learned new things from it. The behind the scenes stories on how collaborations happened and negotiations are really interesting.This could be used as a textbook to teach a college course on the subject.

However, if you are seeking something with lots of Scripture and much to ponder, I recommend checking out the book.

Yes, its broad-brushed. Yes, there are times when it is a little too harsh. Yes, some details may be applied in different ways according to context. There's no doubt Paul Washer is an intense guy. But there is also no doubt to me that he has his finger on the pulse of the American church and he has found but a very faint heartbeat. Washer's ten indictments are nothing new and all of them may not apply to us or to our church situations but I urge Christian readers to give Washer's thoughts a fair hearing. I put Paul Washer in the category of men like Leonard Ravenhill and Keith Green, of preachers like AW Tozer and Vance Havner. What they said wasn't always just right, but it was always memorable and the part that was right had such a way of getting to the heart of things that you couldn't help but be moved. I am thankful for brother Washer and pray that I will take to heart the message of this book.

This is the kind of message the church needs. And it is so, because it is from the Bible, exclusively. Al Christians should be aware of the dangers of not having the Word of God as their rule of life. The sufficient Word is the place to know the person of Jesus and the way to properly worship Him. This is a strong message that is similar, in a sense, of Johnathan Edwards' 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God'. The church needs this message. We need such a message. I needed that message. A must read book!

Much like Ravenhill and Tozer, Paul Washer is not one to hold back. His book "Ten Indictments Against the Modern Church" is a great example. In this short book, you will find much to challenge you. I don't agree with every perspective Washer has, but honestly hearing the hard-hitting message is refreshing in a day where so much of Christian publishing seems very weak and overly consoling. Don't get me wrong, we do need comfort. But there are also times when we need to be shaken deeply.The 10 indictments are as follows:1. A denial of the sufficiency of Scripture2. An ignorance of God3. There is always the danger of feeling like we are not doing enough and working our way into a legalistic, and even condemning, state of life. We are all called to different ways of living out our calling and life. Some are called to a more separate way of life, while others are not. Some can drop everything and become what we normally think of as a full-time minister (really we are all full-time ministers regardless of our occupation), but not all are called to that level of sacrifice. If not balanced with a firm understanding of grace, a book like this can cause people to struggle with condemnation rather than conviction, hence the four-star rating. Still, we could all use a little more reading that makes us search ourselves more closely.If you want a challenging read that will stir your heart, pick up this book.

Paul Washer's love for Christ is so intimate it is almost painful. Such a yearning, such a longing to become more like Christ everyday. Pauls Washer has presented some very important facts about the state of the church, the state of evangelism and he backs every single point with the Word of God. Paul is right when he said there is but one Gospel, the Gospel of Christ. Because of our love for Christ, we will be moved to be obedient to His word. I could sit here and write a complete book review on Washer's book, however what I will say is simply that I felt like I have already been to church reading his book, I was so humbled and moved by his sincere urging. I noticed many have referred to Paul Washer's "hate". What hate? I did not read anything that made me believe that he hated, but that he is urging the church as a whole to get right with God. We do not need a counterfeit gospel. The gospel should not be for sale. Christ freely gave. We are saved by the grace of God, and as Paul pointed out, the gospel of Christ, salvation, atonement, regeneration, holiness, etc. is hardly ever mentioned anymore. What are the people being saved from? And why? We can agree to disagree but the Bible states that it is the word of God. If we cannot trust the scriptures and take them literally, why read them at all? May God continue to bless and use Paul Washer.
