THE SETUPThe series setup is that the parents of Violet, Kraus, and infant Sunny were killed in a fire, which destroyed their home and made them orphans. Their evil uncle Count Olaf schemes to get custody of them, in order to rob the Baudelaire fortune.In "The Austere Academy" (book 5), the three Baudelaire orphans, 14 year-old Violet, 12 year-old Klaus, and infant Sunny, are sent a private boarding school run by vice-principle Nero. They meet obnoxious Carmeleta Spats, but also make friends with Duncan and Isadora Quagmire. Shortly thereafter evil uncle Count Olaf is hired as the gym teacher.BOOKS 1 to 5Books 1 to 5 are written in what I can only describe as dark droll asinine British talking-down-to children humor, becoming increasingly dark and depressing. The author isn't British, but obviously misspent his youth overdosing on Monte Python re-runs. He strains to be clever and witty, and succeeds, no doubt to the applause of his adult friends.It is one thing for an adult to do funny voices, ad lib, and exaggerate when telling a story or reading to children, but it isn't the same written in a book--it's disconcerting, if not a tad creepy. These are books for adults to read to young children, not for children to try to read on their own. Children are not sophisticated enough to catch the difference between truth and droll exaggeration on paper--spoken tone and inflection make all the difference.The books are too bleak and depressing for it's target audience, e.g., 4 to 8 year olds. The "bad things" are not goblins, trolls, and orcs which can be dismissed as "pretend". The bad things are ordinary adults. Most children either live in broken home, have never known a father, or have friends in those situations--and can easily imagine losing the remaining custodial parent. There's nothing scarier to a child. Add to that the knowledge that they are not nearly as cleaver as the Baudelaires. Now that's terrifying.In Books 1 to 5, Count Olaf is portrayed as a clever greedy schemer.On the positive side, the message of self-reliance is certainly beneficial, albeit balanced by the message that all adults are stupid, untrustworthy, and/or evil. Again, an intelligent, trustworthy, decent adult reader is essential to balance the message.Since I was a small child, I've detested "children's" literature such as the animated cartoon "Bullwinkle", and most recent "Disney" animations, which are actually written for adults with adult cultural references and double entendres that only an adult could catch. Handler doesn't use adult cultural references or double entendres--his schtick is mis-defining words--which, in my opinion, is the equivalent of lying to a child, a form of child abuse.BOOKS 6 to 13Book 6 to 13 are of an entirely different style--either they were writen by a different author or Daniel Handler just started taking his anti-psychotic medications). Books 6 to 13 appear to be genuinely written for 10-year-olds to early teens, but are fun reading for adults as well. More effort is made to define "advanced vocabulary" words accurately, and the books actually have interesting plots.. Although the Baudelaire orphans are in tough situations, the plots are not really dark. However, Count Olaf becomes darker, becoming uncouth cruel nasty and evil.THE "DEFINITIONS" IN "THE AUSTERE ACADEMY"Definitions of "advanced vocabulary" words is an almost trademark device of the of the series. However, in "books" 1 to 4 most of the definitions were misleading or just plain wrong. In "The Austere Academy", the author appears to make a sincere effort to explain not only "advanced vocabulary" words, such as "triptych", but also idiomatic phrases, such as "making a mountain out of a mole hill", and "following suit". Jolly good.But he still occasionally reverts to form with some real boners. "Austere" is defined as "stern and sphere" A sentence such as: "The territorial crabs were unhappy to see small children in their living quarters", defines "territorial" in a particular context. But the assertion that "Territorial" MEANS ' unhappy to see small children in their living quarters'" is not true. Pseudo-definitions as a humorous device may entertain an adult reading the book to a child, but does not enlighten the child. Examples: ***"Gingerly" is defined as "avoiding territorial crabs", *** "Poor teacher" (which needs no definition) is defined as "obsessed with the metric system". *** "Glaze over" is defined as "ache with boredom". **** "Inevitable" is defined as "A lifetime of horror and woe". *** "Ruefully" is defined as "while pointing at a rude, violent, and filthy little girl". Possibly, some bright children may get the joke that the so-called definitions are NOT definitions, but rather only examples of use in a particular context--but I doubt that most 6-8 year olds are that sharp.The ending is particularly depressing---not a good place to send your kids off to dreamland.> Click on “Stoney” just below the product title to see my other reviews, or leave a comment to ask a question.

I enjoyed the first three books in this series well enough all though I do admit they were very similar.Then I got to The Miserable Mill. It HAS to be said: how many more times can the author write exactly the same story? Book 4 is the same as the first three: orphans have yet another home, yet again they are treated badly and yet again Count Olaf is after them in yet another disguise. And yet again no-one believes them. Yet again the orphans prove it's Olaf and yet again Olaf makes an escape to be free to come after them again in the next book. Enough already!It's the same exact plot every time, the only difference being the location and a handful of new people. I'm wondering how long the author is going to keep this up. He's getting money for old rope in publishing these: he doesn't have to put much work or imagination into each book as they're all so similar! There's no suspense, no mystery, NOTHING as you know exactly how the story will play out.The only BIG difference with this one is that it is EVEN more implausible than the last 3. Instead of being sent to another relative, this time the 3 orphans (including the baby) are put to work in a lumber mill along with other adult to do back-breaking manual labour. It wasn't even that interesting, I found it hard to get through because it did little to capture the reader in any way, It was just plain dull.Big plot holes are also surfacing. Why is it, everywhere the orphans go, they are so often poor despite being heirs to a massive fortune. Normally in a will, a certain amount of the parents money is made availalbe immediately in order to pay for the care of the children: if the fortune is so large perhaps very good private boarding school. Yet here, every penny is held in trust until Violet is older so mean while the kids have to resort to manual labour in a lumber mill. WHAT parents (especially those who are so rich) would write a will which left their children with nothing to live on for years. Also, what paretns would expect someone else to raise their children for nothing? No financial provision is ever given to the new carer of the orphans. I'm not surprised they have difficulty finding anywhere good to live.Also, if the money isn't available until Violet is an adult WHY doesn't Count Olaf just disappear for a few years and come back to snatch her when she inherits the fortune? Even if he got the children he couldn't get the money right away. It's just such stupid set of books.I'm going to give it one more shot. I will read book 5 and if it's not any better than this, I'm giving up with this series. I'm assuming it wont be any better as I've already noticed they're being sent to the worst boarding school possible. As I said, why didn't the paretns allocate money for the childrens immediate care. It's so stupid this set up it's not clever or funny anymore. It's just annoying.

If you’re a vegan, and especially an American vegan, chances are you have heard of Vegan Yack Attack. Maybe you’re a fan of Jackie Sobon’s excellent blog, or perhaps you already own her first book, “Vegan Bowl Attack!” Possibly, you follow her column in VegNews magazine. As a food photographer, she has also illustrated some of my favorite cookbooks, like “NYC Vegan” and “Superfoods 24/7.” Many readers value illustrated recipes, and as we say in German, ‘das Auge isst mit’ (‘the eye eats, as well’). In any case, you know you’re in good hands with Jackie.Requesting books by popular authors is a game of chance because publishers get TONS of requests, and so I consider myself particularly lucky to receive a preview copy of “Vegan Yack Attack on the Go!” Many, many people online have expressed frustration when it comes to putting meals together quickly, or coming up for lunch ideas for school and office. In this book, you will find answers in form of dishes that come together fast, can be made ahead, or both.After a blissfully short introduction (I’m not big on intros), new vegans especially will find the first chapter, Vegan Eating Made Easy, a huge help for creating a kitchen well stocked with basic necessities. The Helpful Tips and Tricks are helpful indeed to ensure maximum enjoyment of your culinary creations and also a word on oil-free cooking. I would like to point this out in particular, because all too often comments show up by reviewers who have neglected to actually read the entire book and then complain that they ended up returning it for not accommodating an oil-free lifestyle!But on to chapter 2, Quick Breakfasts, Snacks, and Treats. This chapter isn’t all sweets and snacks, though: you’ll also find a recipe for Freezer Black Bean Burritos and Millet Sweet Potato Soup Bags, for example. Please note that from here on out, recipes may require several steps to prepare different components; be sure to read the entire recipe ahead of time and plan accordingly. Then, you will have a fridge and freezer filled with dishes that will reheat or can be assembled in no time at all.Chapter 4’s Lunchbox Stuffers primarily consist of wraps, sandwiches, and salads, but there are also empanadas, spring rolls, and even a Veggie Sushi Bento Box. Chapter 5, Meals in 30 Minutes or Less, has the wonderful subtitle ‘Home-Cooked Meals for the Hangry’, people like me who sometimes (or maybe as a general rule) want dinner RIGHT NOW! Whether you crave a filling stew or chilli, a hefty burger, or your favorite comfort food, chances are you’ll find something here. Personally, I have been experimenting with exotic -read: beyond crumbles and lentils- taco fillings, so I am looking forward to testing the Sheet Pan Squash Tacos. If you’re a fan of the pressure cooker, try the Pressure Cooker Pesto Spaghetti Squash. Chapter 6 addresses Bulk Cooking, featuring an international potpourri of recipes, like kluski, pierogi, and Middle East-inspired dishes, and even a seitan roast made in the slow cooker.My favorite chapter, though, is Chapter 7, Food on the Move, because it contains loads of things that can go on the grill. It is, after all, finally summer, even in Indiana! Because these recipes are quite portable (even if the caveat Some Assembly Required is given), these can go with you when you’re invited and not sure your host will be able to accommodate your dietary needs. There are quite a few dishes I’m itching to try, like the Cauliflower Curry Grill Packets with Yogurt Sauce, Campfire Banana Splits, and Beer Can Pulled Cabbage, which is why this book has been placed on my wishlist: I need my own copy!In the final chapter, Chapter 8, you will get ideas on creating your own staples. Besides the usual suspects, tomato sauce, pesto, cheeze sauce, and mayo, you’ll also get some out-of-the-ordinary variations, like Berry Rhubarb Chia Jam (so psyched to find the far-too-neglected rhubarb here!) and Buckwheat Taco Meat. The latter found its way into my frying pan last night: it was easy to put together, smelled heavenly, and tasted quite good, although the buckwheat I have seems to have a peculiar flavor that doesn’t entirely go away even among all those spices. As I have noticed this in a buckwheat-based smoothie bowl before, I can honestly say it’s the grain, not the particular recipe, and results may vary. Still, I’m looking forward to taco night!If my math is correct, you get a total of 107 recipes to keep you well fed and happy. The vast majority comes with a photo, so there is no guesswork as to what the final result might look like. Each recipe has a sub-heading with useful information, like ‘under ten ingredients’, ’30 minutes or less’, ‘gluten-free’, ‘soy-free’, etc. Most come with helpful notes at the end. Haters of “exotic” ingredients will love the fact that everything can be bought in a regular supermarket, at least here in Podunk, IN, with the exception of kala namak, which I found at the local Indian grocer without any fuss. And of course every recipe tells you how many servings you’ll end up with. What I really appreciate is the table of contents at the beginning of every chapter. As is common in vegan cooking, you will not find nutritional information for the dishes included.“Vegan Yack Attack on the Go!” is published by Quarto Publishing Group – Fair Winds Press. LOVE LOVE LOVE! This book is simply amazing. I have tabbed so many recipes that I'm super pumped to make. I really like that the ingredients aren't super hard to find and that it gives options to make recipes gluten free, soy free, nut free, sugar free, etc. for people that have dietary restrictions. I also love that most of the recipes have amazing, bright, colorful pictures. #plantbased for the win!!

This cookbook has been amazing. While I love to cook, I don’t often have the time during the week and try to cook enough on Sundays to make it last all week for me. I haven’t been able to put this book down since I got it. Every recipe has been beyond delicious (The mac & trees? The baked falafel with THAT tzatziki? OBSESSED) and they’re all quick and easy. I’m generally a “junk food” vegan, but this book makes it easy to get all my veggies in in the right way and I feel good after every meal. I can’t stop recommending this cookbook to everyone I know, it’s one of my all time favorites.

Ordered this book b/c it was recommended by Sophia De Santis (Veggies Don't Bite). Was quite pleased that this book is as easy to use and loaded with photos like Sophia's Vegan Burger and Burritos book. The macaroni and trees recipe was great and we're making the summer stew this evening to use up some great produce. I like the tips and info at the beginning of the book and how recipes are grouped, i.e. "30-minute meals", "Bulk Cooking", etc. This cookbook will be well-worn in a very short time...

Jackie and this cookbook has helped my family to transition into a Vegan lifestyle easily! Her seitan recipes have helped me to make school lunches a breeze and dishes for my family a delicious gathering. We love to camp and are always on the go and Jackie has also included recipes to make it easier to eat Vegan while still busy!

This book is still new to me but I’ve tried about five of the recipes and found each one to be a winner. And, the recipe that urged me to buy the book, I haven’t even made yet! They’ve all gone together quickly and were quite tasty.

And I am finding that with Bobby Newman in the picture there can be nothing dry about it. Funny guy.

They were not kidding when they said "JUMBO PRINT"! Guess they use the egg-size grading system where "JUMBO" means MUCH LARGER than "Large." I feel like I am in first grade and should be using Crayolas to fill out these GIGANTIC puzzles.Side from that (shock at how large they are), I think it's time that crossword puzzle publishers start using more common sense in designing these books. I bought this one because I thought it would have "large print" (not GIGANTIC!)--meaning larger than the tiny faint print so common in the cheaper books. I also bought it for the SPIRAL binding, but there was no need for a spiral binding on a book that prints clues on the left side and the puzzles on the right! It means you are constantly flipping back and forth for the current page, or else you are using the book flat, in which case, why do you need spiral binding? Totally illogical. The metal binding drives up the price of the book but offers ZERO benefit.As for the puzzles themselves, they are not all that "easy." What they are is "abbreviated"--meaning, not very many clues or answers in each puzzle. The book also does not specify if the answer is more than one word (which is helpful to know in figuring out the answer). The puzzles themselves ask for obscure as well as very "easy" answers. Examples: Easy: Composer Stravinsky. Trickier/obscure: Pen name of Charles Dickens.Another annoyance I've noticed in recent crossword books purchased: The arrangement of answers in back of book is seemingly haphazard instead of in numerical order. I can't figure out why they do that, but it means I have to keep the answer page open--because if I don't have the answer in 2 or 3 guesses, I check the answer page and correct things and move on.What is nice about the book: the beautiful cover, which is sturdy as well as pretty. And the quality paper.If my recommendations/criticisms were heeded, this book could sell for HALF the price. $12.95 is steep for what you get.Will probably not buy any more books by this publisher unless they attend to these issues/suggestions. :)

The only way I could be more pleased would be if these had Pat Zajak's Clues.Yeah, I am not an accomplished crossword puzzle fanatic. A fanatic, perhaps, but not very good at the puzzles.Still, I do like to try solving them when I'm not writing something. It's a pretty good way to work through writer's block.BOTTOM LINEFive stars out of five.

My 96 yr. old Mom is having trouble with her vision, and this crossword book is great for her. She did say the puzzles are not all "easy" though.

I enjoy doing crosswords late at night, I love the spiral bound, easy to handle, and the big print iswonderful!!!!

(I guess they thought watching the movie was enough.); was a Nazi nurse the best "compassionate" image they could come up for the WWII era?; a typo that puts the Middle Ages as starting in 476 BC instead of 476 AD (pretty sloppy for the 7th edition); using the long debunked term "Dark Ages" and then incorrectly dating the Dark Ages from 146 BC to 476 AD when 476 AD was about when they STARTED, not ended. Using a figure from the Roman empire for their section on the Middle Ages (only about 700 years off); placing the Crusades about 500 years too early; using the examples of New Testament figures of noblewomen Dorcas and Phoebe as nurses (do they have a different Bible than I do?); implying that females weren't allowed to help in the birthing of children during the Middle Ages when it was the MEN who couldn't participate; and on and on and on. What a disaster.

This really is a pretty good book with an excellent overview of many issues faced by today's nurses and student nurses. However there was a lot of repetition, for which it received 4 stars, (but perhaps the authors did this on purpose to drill what I found to be fairly dry reading into our heads?). This book may not go completely in depth into the subject materials as it seems to be more of a broad based introductory reading but it more than makes up with the abundant offerings of outside sources it provides for one to be able to fully explore any further issues or questions that have caught your attention.

The book is much different than the newer version so it won't work for class if your teacher wants the updates. oh well my bad for ordering it :(

I enjoy the text. I am learning a lot and did not realize how much is involved in nursing today. The text outlines the basics in contemporary nursing issues, and gives references by links to further your studies. Very well written!

had to rent it for school

The 6th addition is much thinner than the 5th and 4th. I feel it is a quicker read than the other previous additions. The nice thing is I get to read this version on my Kindle with the new formatting of the text. I do not think this was available in the previous versions.

It's Ok, but still missing some topic. Wish I subscribe for the new edition.

A great companion to have handy and I don't have lots of notes to take as the book is right in front of me. It is easy to follow. I love having this and of course as usual Amazon has the best price by far!
