I read all previous books, and most of the crimson worlds series as well as other books by Jay Allan. He’s an excellent writer, but personally the only thing I had going for this book was momentum.I mean, how many pages of introspection can you read before you get some dialogue or an action scene? And the entire series the tactics never change, fighters make their runs, some slugfest killing a few more ships, yada yada yada.So basically it’s a novella stretched out as a book, filled with elaborate descriptions of feelings, personal histories, thoughts, circumstances and other distractions, with very little really happening. All well written of course.

The Rim world’s have gathered their forces and they are rebuilding their strength and preparing for the next Hegemony attack. Admiral Tyler Barron is sick of waiting. Limited information indicated that over the last 5 years the Hegemony has rebuilt their strength much more than the Grand Alliance has.Massive caravans of Hegemony supply ships and new battleships have helped them continue their hold of the Confederation home world and capital city. Millions are dead but now it is time. Time to act and stop wasting time. Admiral Barron wants to attack the Hegemony forces and work to drive them out of the Rim or to totally defeat them. The Confederation has a new, more powerful beam weapon with extended range. They hope it will play a difference in this battle. They have shared it with their best allies and it is now or never to win this endless war. The Hegemony also has a few secret weapons that they hope will turn the tide of the war in their favor…..I don’t know how Jay Allan does it. He continues to write one great storyline after another. I no sooner finish one of his books and another one is released. I have read almost all of his books and everyone of them is great.I am a fan of military Sci-Fi and Jay Allan is a great talent writing this genre of stories. I found this book moving from one tremendous space battle to the next. Toss in a couple of planet surface conflicts and you have a great storyline that held my interest. I rated this book 5 stars and I can’t wait until the next episode is released.Keep up the good work Jay!

I've already got Grand Alliance and already read it. Good story. The whole series is my favorite. I read a LOT of science fiction...I have my whole life and Duel in the Dark was and still is the best book I have ever read. Of course, I had to keep up with the rest of the story. Can't wait for The Colossus.

There are a number of spelling and grammatical errors in the book and even some consistency issues which hurt somewhat.I’m curious to see if the author will discuss the “Cataclysm”. I’ve got a few theories on it and I’m wondering if I am right. The characters are strong and the plotting has greatly improved. I’m hoping with what I’m guessing will be fewer plot lines that this will tighten things up for more.

So glad to see Barron take the fight back to Megara. Epic battle and characters. Too many lost. I still have questions tho. Why has no one been able to find some way to communicate in-depth with the Hegemony? Why don’t they explain about the Others? After so many years and so much interaction on Dannith and with the Kriegiri on Megara, I don’t understand the tunnel vision of billions. Surely some brain somewhere in both the Union and the Hedgemony would begin to see that there is another way of living other than tyranny and slavery. While I am addicted to this series it do find aspects of these entire galaxies depressingly unevolved.

In some ways this book was so straightforward that it was boring because it was predictable. It was also a bit unsettling or it just seemed off because the Union leadership did a 180° flip from the end of the last book to this book regarding it's stance on the Hegemony. That just seemed wrong. Regardless, this book offers the usual mix of ground and space combat which is enjoyable even when it is predictable. The author has all but promised the Hegemony will wise up going forward, be less arrogant and stop making foolish military decisions. Personally, I'm waiting the "Others" to show up ;)

Jay Allen continued to deliver great military fiction in chronicling the life of Tyler Barron and the Confederation. Earlier books were focused on one ship and its struggles in battle. Now Barron is an admiral and the action is fleet wide. But Allen also adds new characters to give a more personal touch to the struggle and how crews fight and die in space. If you have been reading the series as I have, you will enjoy this book immensely and keep looking forward to the next installment.

I have bought almost all of his books and been on a month-long reading binge! Love these books, they remind me of when I found the "Hammer's Slammers" series long ago and went on a binge with those.
