Slowly but with inmense satisfaction and pleasure I'am reading this book. It is no easy reading, but I find it worthwhile and of great blessing to me.
A practical book that helps give insight into one of Germany's less confused theologians. Bart like most German theologians also lives in an upper story but puts one foot on the ground occasionally.
This is not a thorough review, but I thought I would at least alert buyers/readers that Baker decided to not include an index (they confirmed this over the phone with me). This adds, in my opinion, a significant weakness to the book in that it now takes (should I say wastes?) much more time to look for specific sections on distinct topics/authors. There are also a variety of typos on pgs 1, 4, 30, 34, and 72 (perhaps more). It seems that the book was rushed or there was a poor job of editing. This is unfortunate as I looked forward to this book.On the other hand, I will echo the other review in that Vanhoozer's article is worth the price of the book. His chapter presents how Van Til, Henry, Ramm, Bloesch and postliberal theology have understood Barth's view of Scripture. He then moves on to give Barth's own account on topics such as inspiration, inerrancy, canon, authority and interpretation of the Bible. He ends with a look at the contemporary views and then gives his own account of how to "resolve the long-standing dispute between evangelicals and Barth concerning the nature of biblical authority" (54). Vanhoozer accomplishes this with the use of speech-act philosophy. Overall, the chapter is extremely informative, charitable, and interactive - well worth the read.
Those who are familiar with Barth know that he has always received a mixed reception in the evangelical community. This is largely due to his reinterpretation of many traditional Reformed doctrines. This book of essays is an accessible discussion of many of Barth's key convergences with and divergences from evangelical theology. I highly recommend it!
