Review
"Diane Melville is my hero and honestly this book is my new favorite! What I love is that she knows her stuff because she lived it! I recommend this book to all students who want to save 40,000 plus dollars by getting their Associates Degree in addition to being admitted to their dream school. I also recommend this book to all community college advisors that work with transfer students. The community college advantage is really a game changer because it makes everyone realize that community colleges are pathways to the Ivy League and all schools! " - Ellen Goldberg, District Director of Transfer Programs and Services at the City Colleges of Chicago"The book will answer several questions on the minds of high school seniors who want to apply to their local community colleges but are uncertain about opportunities and advantages that a community college education might offer them. " - Joseph Adegboyega-Edun, Counselor/College Adviser at Walter Johnson High School (MD) "Melville explains the benefits of going to community college and what prospective students need to know about the experience. She argues that going to community college and transferring to a four year school is a great way to cut costs and find more educational flexibility. She offers tips on successful program construction, getting financial aid, where to transfer, and how to get into the top schools. A final chapter focuses on career planning and thinking about employment. She also provides a resource guide to financial aid and other resources. M" - Book News Inc."Suggests ways students can make the most of their time in community college and ease their transfer to a four-year institution or job." - The Chronicle of Higher Education

I bought this for my daughter in high school who isn't sure how to proceed with her education. I was actually surprised to find out that it not only covers how to best use 2 years at community college to save tuition money, but also some tips on which majors to choose. This was good for my daughter who has a lot of ideas of what she likes and is good at. We bookmarked a lot of the pages about loans and scholarships too, which we will definitely be applying for. My daughter was not very enthusiastic at first about reading the book herself, but it's written in a straight forward way and she is starting to warm up to the idea of community college. We will be keeping this book on hand for our two younger children. I recommend it.
Incredible book for community college students, prospective community college students, and any college students! This book was full of information that was extremely helpful to transferring to your dream school! But Diane Melville goes above and beyond with her section of the book about actually getting a job when the college process is over. This was an incredibly informative book, and a must read for all community college students, ans students considering community college. Diane Melville's success story was also so inspiring
This book is a great resource to help navigate the complex process of transferring from community college to university. Everything is laid out in an easy to read manner, making it a must-read for those looking to get their degree in a more affordable way.
I need all the help I can get
I am a transfer student and I need advice, this book answered them! Really love this book, helps a lot!
Good reading for anyone contemplating college...or any parent with a child going to college.
Some good hints here, but chatty and wordy in its approach in the first half of the book. At times I wondered if she'd EVER get to the point she was trying to make. There is one rather significant error - at least for community colleges in our state. (And I teach part-time at one.) She mentions that the A.A. degree is the transfer degree and the A.S. is for students who want to enter the workforce right after graduation from a community college. In our state, that is not the case. The AAS (Associate's in Applied Science) is for those who want to seek employment immediately. The A.A. and A.S. degrees are BOTH transfer degrees - the A.A. requires competency in a foreign language and is for individuals who want to complete a four-year degree in a liberal arts field. The A.S. is for students who wish to complete a four-year degree in math, science, education, or business and that degree in our state does not require competency in foreign language. The author also neglects to mention alternate ways of earning college credits such as through CLEP and DSST exams (for high school students who have challenged themselves academically and are willing to do some independent study) or portfolios (for adults who have worked for several years before starting college.) These can significantly reduce the cost and time of completion of a community college degree. Some four-year colleges do not accept credits earned through CLEP and/or DSST exams, but the vast majority do.
Not helpful.
