Having been a gardener for over 30 years, I am still impressed with the tips which Tracy has shared in this book. I grow mainly perennials and almost all of them are covered in her book. This book goes in-depth into each species and also gives recommendations for which cultivars do best. I highly recommend this book.

I bought this for my husband. He says it exceeded his expectations and it's the best book he's bought in years. He loves that the author SHOWS the reader examples of how to do various things with the garden, and doesn't just tell the reader. There are lots of photos showing examples of how to do things & what will happen if you don't. He loves it! We have a large yard with many large gardens and he says this book is like a bible for maintaining them and creating new ones.

This is by far the best book about growing and taking care of perennials.I saw a recommendation in an English gardening book and decided to buy it. I have alot of books but this is the best. It includes info on pruning (cutting back)plants and when. Though we live in very different zones it is easy to translate hers to mine. (Ohio to Ca.) .I highly recommend this book.

Death Metal musician and author Ekeroth (Violent Italy) shows a true fan's dedication in this oral history/band index of the thunderous music scene that emerged from frozen, sparsely-populated Sweden in the '80s and early '90s. In his introduction, Ekeroth explains the youth phenomenon that was Swedish Death Metal (it sounds pretty much like you would think) as natural in a country "generally made up of extremely small and boring towns." He writes: "In the small and worthless town of Avesta where I grew up, there were metal bands in every garage, school, and youth center," he writes. Without sensationalizing SDM's dark, flamboyant lyrics, Ekeroth traces the movement that produced more than a thousand bands, from proto-genre "thrash metal" (more punk) to bastard offshoots like "black metal" (more makeup, less fun), through interviews with the musicians, tape-traders and fanzine writers who were there. The furious scene, made up almost entirely of frustrated and disaffected teenagers, would echo the '70s punk revolution in New York and explode with the same powder-keg intensity, before eventually spawning "ridiculously well established" years that meant the death of Death. Maybe worth the price alone is the appendix, an "A to Z of Swedish Death Metal Bands," which features brief profiles and discographies (with Ekeroth's opinions) of every known SDM band, from world-famous At the Gates ("all their albums are classic masterpieces") to Slakt (just one 2005 demo, "probably nerds"). Daniel Ekeroth gives an amazingly detailed account of the birth and rise of one the most revered genres of metal music. It focuses on the seeds of the extreme movement and how it developed into the massive Sunlight sound and beyond.It basically leaves no stones unturned on the origins of these Swedish bands. the book includes first hand accounts from many people in those bands and people involved with zines, radioshows ectThis book is truly hard to put down.If you are looking for info about In Flames, Dark Tranquillity or other Gothenburg bands do not look here.The closest you will get is some info from Michael Amott from Arch Enemy but if you didn't know he was apart of the seminal band Carnage.Get it now!

Excellent work dedicated to the Swedish scene. Lots of great information and interviews, et cetera. It isn’t flawless with some mistakes here and there, but where else are you going to get such an extreme write up on the Swedish movement? It’s a little overpriced in my opinion, but well worth the purchase.

Arrived in great condition

Like any book on music there are a lot of parts in the book that are subjective. That being said this is the most in-depth, interesting, and well researched book not just on metal but on any topic I've read concerning music.The pictures and articles Ekeroth managed to scrape together for this amazing tome compliment the writing and history very well, and being that this is the most money I've spent for a book in a long time, it was worth every penny.A star gets deducted because, even though it is clarified in the introduction that there a lots of parts that are subjective, there are areas where the author comes off "metal-er than thou." This is especially the case in the index of metal bands where bands that actually made money and became famous (see In Flames) are called "too commercial." Shouldn't the listener/reader be the judge of that? And maybe they are too commercial in Scandinavia, but last I checked an In Flames album would not stand a chance to crack the Top 40 in the American market, which IS way overproduced and manufactured.That aside it has to be one of the best things I've read in a long time and I'm hoping someone comes along and puts out a book about Children of Bodom and the Finnish metal scene sometime in the near future (preferably in the King's English and not Finnish).

This is remarkably well written and goes into detail about the music itself instead of just the people and places involved in its creation. There are lots of great photos, too. If you love metal, this should be on your book shelf or coffee table! :) Sarah

I buy a lot of these types of bass books, and I like this author's books. This one is good; it's a nice review and tribute to the major bass players within the R&B genre during its heyday. It provides some basic background information about each bassist., and a few measures of signature sample grooves. I like that it has some suggested tracks to listen to for each bassist. The author has done this with some of his other books, and I appreciate it. It helps me build a music library based on bass players and genres. There isn't a lot to engage you and your bass in this book, so it's different from the usual bass work books, which isn't a bad thing. As a book about bass players, styles, and the genre. it is worth the purchase. However, as a bass workbook, maybe not so much. However, I'm glad it's in my library.

Exactly what it purports to be - insight into the styles, "sound" and "signature" techniques of some exceptional R&B bassists. As others have stated, the book is not song-length transcriptions, but rather teaching "nuggets", which includes specific discography suggestions.I strongly recommend listing to the author's recommended cuts prior to attempting to absorb the bassist's dedicated chapter. For me that discography review gave increased contextual understanding of each bass player's approach. Thanks to the wonders of the internet, and Amazon's streaming audio, many of the recommended cuts are just a few mouse clicks away

First, my background: I am a performer (bass trombone and electric bass) and an instructor. I am also a composer and arranger. My undergraduate degree is in Music Education (Masters in Music Composition); and the majority of my Air Force career was spent in the field of Education and Training.I "collect" bass guitar method books, always searching for that "perfect" book for the beginning, intermediate, or advanced bassist. "The R&B Bass Masters: The Way They Play" is written by Ed Friedland who, once again demonstrates that he is truly a master at authoring bass method books that are well-organized and easy to understand, yet extremely comprehensive and informative. (I dare say that, if Ed Friedland is the author, then the book is worth purchasing without any further research required!)Aside from the obligatory introduction, author's biography, acknowledgments and CD track list, "R&B Masters" is divided into 10 chapters, each featuring a different R&B bass legend. Each chapter contains a brief biography of the featured bassist as well as sections on his gear and setup, style and technique, and a lesson with examples from his repertoire (included on the accompanying CD). The lesson examples are explained and analyzed; and written in both standard music notation and tablature. However, this is the precise circumstance where tablature is an invaluable tool to gaining insight as to "how" the R&B master played a particular bass line. What makes this book so great is that the drum part is also included with the music notation and tablature.In addition (and this is the "icing on the cake"), each chapter includes a selected discography (with recommended "cuts") and a detailed "checklist" which covers each bassist's equipment (type of bass, fingerboard, condition [stock or custom], setup, strings, pickups, and amp), as well as the bassist's tone, attack, signature traits, influences and overall approach.As an example of how this all fits together, the chapter on Ronnie Baker (one of Philadelphia's top session bassists in the late '60s-mid '70s) states that he used an Ampeg B-15 amp (as a monitor in the studio; but a direct box fed his sound to the mixing board) and a stock, pre-CBS Fender Precision bass with stock Fender Precision split-coil pickups, a rosewood fingerboard, and heavy-gauge flatwound strings (that had "possibly" been marinated in butter!). It goes on to state that his tone was dark with a very dead sound (strings muted at the bridge with masking tape or paper towels) with a very punchy, yet rounded sound. He kept solid time, and his bass lines were unassuming with occasional bursts of flair. He was influenced by Duck Dunn and James Jamerson, and his overall approach to playing the bass was with melodic, laid-back grooves with a behind-the-beat feel. Further insight into Baker's style and technique is provided by comments from his session-soulmate, drummer Earl Young, who states that Baker made sure he knew what was going on by watching the drummer and his kick-drum pedal. "Baker would watch my feet, explained Young. "He sat on my left side and he'd copy whatever my foot was doing."All in all, a "must have" book for anyone interested in a bassist's perspective of R&B: both its history and bass playing style.

It's written by Ed Friedland, what more do I need to say, really? He is the master of bass instruction books, and this is one of his better books. While it doesn't give you as much theory or charting as most of his other books, it does give you a decent glimpse into the careers and lives of some of the greatest bass players who ever lived, and explains how they got their signature sounds, making it easier to emulate their style when covering their tunes.

I've had this book for about ten days now and am very happy with it. The biographical backgrounds on the players is enjoyable to read and it's interesting to see what gear these guys were using -- this information really rounds out this book in a way that makes it stand out from other books I've used.The recording that comes with the book is also very good. The bass is very loud and the author does a good job of nailing each bassist's tone and feel. Also, the rhythms stand up, too, which is key. What's cool is that the bass is in one speaker and the drums are in the other so, if you want, you can turn the balance on your stereo and play with the drums alone, without the bass track getting in your way.I think some people are turned off by this book because the entire bass line for each song isn't written out. Personally, I prefer it this way. I just want to get a taste for what these particular players were doing and don't feel like learning entire songs.

(We always want more -- AFA history, there's no end to the story) It's very colorful and tells the story of the Minoans, a lost civilization which predated the Greeks and evidently were very influential across the Mediterranean of their day until they "disappeared" around 1400BC from the perspective of the Greek myth of Athenian hero Theseus and his quest to kill the Minotaur.The Minotaur's labyrinth refers to the Greek myth telling of King Midas who demanded youth be given every year for Crete and its ceremonies, and the Greek hero who decided to become one of these youth and kill the Minotaur and end the annual campaigns.

I have worked on software development for many years before working in software QA. I bought the book because of all the promises and hypes about model based testing, which is quite appealing. I used Spec# early on, but quickly turned off by the difficulty, complexity of the tool and for most part, a lack of support. NModel fixes all that (okay nearly)The book starts with a historical review of modeling tools. If you want to get to the heart of the subject start at chapter 5 which lays out the principles of modeling software. Any software development experience will be beneficial since it assumes that you've done some software analysis and development.The tools that the authors are offering are freely available from NModel website.Mpv - is what you use to generate a FSM from your model, which the tool turns into a *.dot file for visualization.Otg - off line test generator allows you to generate test cases from the model you built.Ct - allows you to execute test cases generated by using Otg. It requires a stepper (see below)If you have decent C# coding skill you should be able to read and follow the examples given in the book (which you can also download from NModel website). The work flow is 1) create a VS project, 2) analyze and describe your model in C# 3) compile it 4) generate test cases using Otg 5) build a stepper, and 6) execute the test cases. If a test case fails it indicates that there's a bug in the system under test or there's a bug in your model, or a requirement is ill-defined. A stepper is a test harness that bridges the model to the system under test. In practice expect to put in just as many time and effort on coding a stepper as coding your model.In my project I successfully adapted NModel to build a model for a medical embedded device. My model described the behavior of the device. The test cases were generated on a host (pc) and a stepper executed each test case against the device. The tool captured the response from the device and compared it against the expected result generated from the model. I was able to generate hundreds of test cases easily based on the model I built, which is the real payoff. I was given enough time to work on a model and a test harness, but if your management does not understand the up-front cost of a model based testing this could be a hard sell.This book offers a practical approach to software modeling and the tools they offer do work as advertised (please visit their homepage at codeplex for a bug list) My advice to those curious is to start with a small project, gain some experience before tackling a real project. I would recommend the book to anyone who might consider a model based testing, and I would consider using NModel tool set for my next project as well.
