If you have seen John Sweeney's pioneering Panorama specials, this books is the perfect addition. Find out what was going on behind the scenes of Scientology as they dogged Panorama 's every step. Scientology's ham-handed plots to follow, second guess, pester, provoke and hamper Sweeney's efforts remind me of the Three Stooges with Miscavige as Moe. The Scientology-hired PIs play the Keystone Cops.Sweeney includes transcripts of the Scientology interviews that Panorama was forbidden to show. The "fine women" were prompted to robotically recite the party lines. Their over-the-top praise for David Miscavige is comical.This book helps fit the puzzle pieces together of who is who in the ex-Scientologist and what they endured. Now I know who it was that Sweeney interviewed on the parking lot roof. Tommy Davis appeared and attempted to "dead agent" the man. This proved that they were being followed, that Fair Game is indeed a cult policy and that Scientology is barking mad.This is an indispensable book for Scientology watchers. It filled in many gaps and put a lot of pieces together in this insane Wonderland that is the cult of Scientology.Scientology is still using the exact same playbook as seen in Sweeney's book. They have no learning curve.

Having grown up in Scientology, and having left only three years ago, I've been sorting out what was true and what wasn't true. This book really helped me to understand why the Church of Scientology is in fact a cult. After reading it over two days, my views on the cult became so much more clear. They truly are The Church of Fear! They no longer have any control over me or my family. I'm sadden to think of the few who remain and the hell their lives must be. It takes a lot of energy to pretend everything is just perfect and great, when it isn't. That is the way most Scientologist live, singing the praises of the cult, while living in despair, and financial ruin. The best part about this book was that the author had the text messages of the cult members who were stalking him! It really shows you the level of crazy, and how out of touch with the real world the cult members are. I've seen it myself, and am happy to not be living that way anymore.

Having been part of this cult 35 years ago, I would have thought I had enough distance it would be like reading a history book. Not so.A combination of humor and intensity, Sweeney's book puts you right there in the moment. I woke up with screaming nightmares while reading this book. A must read for anyone who,has ever been a member of, or anyone who ever considers going near this cult.

I wouldn't have trusted this book had Sweeney not been forthcoming with his obvious -- and understandable -- bias. Bias aside, he does a good job of presenting both sides. As a fellow journalist, I can't help but be a bit critical of the reporting he describes because he sounds overly antagonistic from the get-go, which surely gave the church too much to work with in its counter-campaign. That said, Sweeney is an accomplished journalist and I might have fared a million times worse, so while I, in hindsight, can see some flaws in the approach, I don't pretend that I necessarily wouldn't have made the same mistakes -- and far sooner. I'm glad Sweeney wrote this. It was a fascinating read.

I will be honest - I've not yet finished this book - but of the 6 books I've read about Scientology, it is by far my favourite.Since I am not a Scientologist, I do not agree with it being classified a religion, and, to be blunt, think most of it is just nuts - it is nice to read an author with whom I can shake my head and roll my eyes. He makes it quite apparent that he is in no way a fan of the "church".He is no saint, he also makes that clear, but I am not sure my halo would stay in place if I had to deal with some of the stuff he has endured dealing with this group.Of the books I've read, it is one of the least insightful in terms of learning about the "religion" itself, but it is the most enjoyable!

If you watched John Sweeney's Scientology exposes on Panorama (BBC), you know exactly what to expect in this book. CoS is as crazy as ever, but John rarely treads into any new territory. But, he does expand on the behind the scenes during the production these programs.The stories are intriguing.For example, John expands on his interviews with various adherents of Scientology. These are in this exposes in a fleeting couple of moments (since Scientology threatened legal action if any significant footage was used), but John's full story of how excruciatingly awkward it was for him to get accosted by the likes of Kristie Alley and Anne Archer is compelling.Definitely an entertaining read, and also helps expose the ills of Scientology. Recommended.

John Sweeney provides a well documented story behind the scenes of the BBC Panorama investigation into Scientology. it includes updates as recent as Fall 2012 with the revelation that Tommy Davis blew. In the book, Sweeney is able to flesh out the stories portrayed in the 2007 and 2010 documentaries. It's an engaging story and like most involving Co$, one that will leave you shaking your head in disbelief. Sweeney's style is informal. He can tell a story, weaving detail and humor into an engaging narrative. Highly recommended.One minor gripe - the kindle version contains quite a few typos, so obviously was not edited prior to being posted as a kindle version. Did not detract from the substance and the book was inexpensive.

The more I read about Scientology the more I wonder about people, and why we are as f'd up as to stay in such f'd up circumstances. Excuse the cursing here, but some situations like Scientology deserve that level of emphasis.This book was very enjoyable. Yes, lots of typos and grammar errors, but I laughed my ass off much of the time and screamed in frustration into the living room air, wondering why the church is still around.Get passed the spelling errors and stuff, and you'll finish the book more informed, entertained, and downright pissed off that no one has yet booted Miscavige. I hope this doesn't get me Fair-Gamed.

In fact, one of Judd's responsibilities was the organizing and teaching of election supervisors. It would have been easy to say that it was a historic year, the year of independence. It would, therefore, also have been easy for Judd to say that he was participating in something historic. However, one of the many strengths of Figures in a Spare Landscape is Judd's ability to make the "greatness" of things disappear and give evidence of the way individuals are able, but also quite unable, to see or understand their position and opportunities. In 1959-60 he served as Education Officer in the Northern Region of Nigeria, assigned to the Provincial Secondary School, Maiduguri. In 1962 he published African Independence: the exploding emergence of the new African nations, a mass-market paperback that sold tens of thousands of copies. (New York: Dell Publishing Co, 1962), For a list of contributors see References supra. He earned a PhD from the Department of Political Science at Columbia University in 1970, with a dissertation, "British Perspectives on the United States, 1840-1860."

The $5.99 paperback listed is not the full book, it's a small 30 page summary of the book. If you're buying this for school, this is not what you need, and if you're buying it for personal use, it's probably not what you want.

poor English, and rambling. what would a novice do with it and for me it took too much effort to get to the parts that were new to me

Get Norvig and Russels "AI: A Modern Approach" instead.

This book is actually a follow up to Luger and Stubblefield's older book "AI and the Design of Expert Systems". Being somewhat dated in both title and content, this book serves as its resurrection. Both books are excellent in providing a basic introduction to AI. They contain a number of problems and provide just enough infromation on each topic to give the reader the general idea and a sense of having learned something substantial (this is always the danger when writing a book that surveys a variety of interrelated fields). Another strength of the book is its ability to make connections between the different areas of AI. For example, when discussing knowledge representation, they make sure to draw connections with it and logic as well as natural language processing.

This book is written in an archaic fashion. It provides next to no information to solve the questions at the end of each chapter(sometimes concepts will come up that haven't even been discussed in the book). Just about everything is word-salad. It was long just for the sake of being long. Avoid this book, because it's really not worth the purchase.

This is a very good book for anyone wanting to get an insight. Good for the first college course in AI too. It introduces the different areas of AI quite well, and develops logic before doing that. Prolog and LISP are also introduced.The only reason I wouldn't give this book 5 stars is because1) The Prolog and LISP features aren't all that great. They could have done better than just explaining what they did.2) There was very little or almost no depth in the material covered. I wanted to go on reading more about the advanced features, but that never happened. So, I had to go to the library and look for something there.But a great book for a college course. I wouldn't recommend this for a Grad course in CS...A grad student should be knowing beyond what this book covers.

The book presents many aspects like predicate logic, state space search,knowledge representation, natural language understanding, machine learning and specially programming in both LISP and PROLOG.I specially liked the chapters on learning, natural language understanding and the programming techniques.The book is unique for its presentation style, simplicity and illustrations. It must be on the desk of anyone interested to join the disciplines of AI.

Seriously one of the cutest comics I've ever read - love the art and love the concept of cute queer bakers in space!

There's a whole new subgenre of graphic novel / comics about food game shows in SF settings. This is one of the best.

Fun comic especially for those who like competitive cooking shows.

Fun graphic novel duology with a queer girl main character, about an intergalactic high-stakes cooking competition reality show. I'd felt lukewarm about the pitch for this because I've never really watched cooking shows, but I'm so glad I got over myself and gave it a shot. Peony, a baker from Earth, gets picked to compete in an elimination-style cooking program. The competition is much more brutal and backstabbing than she'd imagined, threatening not only her dreams for the prize but her budding romance with fellow chef Neptunia. Totally satisfying "underdog wins the day with help from her friends" story. My son (nine at the time) fell for this instantly. Can't wait to see what Riess does next.

Palm Beach Scandallion. This was okay. I bought as I live in one of the 10 000 Palm Beaches around the world and thought it would be fun to read on a week away. It was. It is easy to read. Made me chuckle out loud in a few places. It taught me nothing, well the history of the place was interesting the chapter at the start. It reaffirmed that money does not buy: sense, taste, intelligence, humour, manners, patience or morals. Pity. I hope the book makes the writers a few dollars - because there was the tiniest twinge of envy every now and then throughout the book. It needed to be written, a more history based one would have been nice but not as juicy! Also, the bane of my life, there were a few editing problems - which always irks me. I pay money to read a book, make sure it is at least spell checked and edited....Read it on the beach, preferably a Palm Beach, the Palm Beach if you can - and the ultimate? Add a new chapter.

My wife comes from a socialist country. Our kids will be reading this book when they get old enough. My wife says if there was 100 stars, she’d have me give 100 stars.

My students constantly ask me to explain socialism. Now, I have a realistic yet simple tool to use in the lesson. This will be very enlightening for them - a story shared by those who have lived it. Thank you!!

The pictures might be a little obscured but i found the captions quite memorable. This book is definitely made for kids who are ready for a more graphical illustration of the world's real political principals. Highly Recommended. A+++++

There are few books like this for kids that cover this much needed subject. History Will repeat itself if we do not pass on these lessons.

There is no truth to be found here only propaganda. This work serves no constructive purpose and only spreads misinformation.

This book is one long straw man. Just as many nations that call themselves "democratic" are not democratic, many countries that call themselves "socialist" are not socialist. Once you realize this, and you find out that almost all of these countries are actually "state capitalist", the value of this book (or rather the lack of it) quickly becomes apparent.The reality is, socialism is about putting people first, capitalism is about putting wealth first. Socialism is defined as the workers owning the means of production. Do the workers own the means of production in any "socialist" country? No - they don't. Instead, the state owns the means of production So those countries are, by definition, not "socialist", but rather "state capitalist".Any kid reading this book will become less smart, because they will be led to misunderstand what socialism really is.

This is merely propaganda for children. If you're more scared of civil liberties leading to socialism than you are of oligarchs fattening up on capitalism and turning authoritarian to benefit themselves (see present times) then this will confirm your bias. I personally think this is pure inculcactory material for those who want the world to look exactly like themselves. Skip, if you feel like thinking on your own and actually teach your kids something. Even their ad is crafted to appeal to the lowest form of base elements of conservatism. "Eees socialism bad? Siiii! Si, senor! Ees berry. berry bad!"
