Well written with no nonsense and easy to understand terms. Actually exciting to read because the author lends brief, interesting stories from his own experience of building log homes. Sufficient details of the building process and appropriately explains why certain methods work better than others. Nice pictures and diagrams to support the text. Found myself wanting even more information than the book offered, such as techniques/considerations on building an outhouse in very cold climates, construction of the roof around joints/vents/stovepipe, suggestions for optional building materials in areas where items cannot be trucked in. Regardless, the book was thorough and I highly recommended it.

This book is a Bible for all Alaskans building cabins or, as in my case, yearning to move to Alaska and build a cabin. Wonderful instruction!

Great book, not only does it show different techniques for building a log house but it tells about the history of different areas, looking for an updated version.

Very good book, although a little old and my copy was used, it is exactly what I am looking for. it is a must for beginner "logsmiths".

Excellent all color on glossy high quality paper. A real pleasure to read with lots of information. Concise chapters dealing with most every aspect of building. A great history section in the back. Not as much technical info as some but the pictures make up for it.

It's a good book full of helpful insights to log home building. If your taking a class, then this book is required reading.

Several of my friends who had read the book raved about how funny it was and how they referred to the book several times during the wedding planing process. Since none of them were able to locate the book, I decided to buy my own copy.The author definitely has a very comical, easy to read style of writing. I enjoyed reading the book and have now loaned it to my friend who is the mother of the bride.Is it the best wedding planning book out there? Probably not, but none the less there were some valuable points that I have gleaned from the book. If you want some comic relief while undergoing some stressors involved with wedding planning, then by all means, buy this book.

Was not what I expected, or needed- I thought it would be a planner for the mother of the bride!

This book is a winner; all Moms I gave it to loved it and I would highly recommend it to anyone contemplating a stint as a M.O.B.!

What a brilliant little book. I loved it, loved it! Why? Humor and sage advise, that is why. Amidst life stresses laughter is the saving grace. Her 10 Commandments for the M.O.G., mother of the groom, and the F.O.B., father of the bride, are priceless. I recited them to my husband and there was shock and whining about #4. "Thou shalt not expect an invitation to the bachelor party; thou shalt not grumble and whine about it." These things simply must be said. Then the glorious #7 " Thou shalt understand fathers never truly "give their little girl (aka the bride) away." The sage advise for the M.O.G.? "Thou shalt not expect a postwedding, next morning phone call from thy baby boy." and the very reasonable #8 "Thou shalt ferry thy son to the altar in one reasonably sober piece, especially if there has been a bachelor party the night before."Above and beyond the humor there is such heart in this little gem. The author and her husband did such beautiful heart felt things for their precious child, and we are inspired to do the same. Amidst the whirlwind, "the F.O.B. did a spendid thing: he invited B. to a weekend get-away for a prewedding father-daughter meaningful experience...there is very little room, if any, during the plan-a-thon for fathers and their little girls about to become brides to have alone time. My bride-to-be and my husband went to an island, walked on the beach, reminisced and allowed me my last sane weekend." There is such heart in this book that other mother of the bride books miss, skirt, or perhaps simply do not care about at all. A wedding isn't just having everything together, it is about coming together in heart and spirit. What gentle, great, bonding can you do that takes an event and makes it so much more? How do you fit in the loving, personal memories? This couple did such loving, thoughtful, gracious and bonding things with the daughter. Thus I am inspired with tools I would not have thought of before and for that I am truly thankful. Sweet M.O.B., for example, took her daughter and the bridesmaids for a day at the spa, another sweet bonding experience...some time out. A day of sharing, laughter, and relaxation. Brilliant!Personally, I did not know about a bridal gown mecca in New York called Kleinfeld's but I do now. My daughters and I are planning on making a weekend of New York, bridal gown shopping at Kleinfeld's, mother daughter photos sessions, Broadway plays. It will make a beautiful memory in the Book of Life. I would never have thought about it had I not read this book. This woman has class, laughter, love and inspiration flowing in her veins. I want to give my daughter more than a wedding and if you do too, then buy this gem of inspiration and sanity.Amidst all of the things that will make you laugh and cry there are short "grayed in" spots of vital information. Order extra boutineers, flowers,...have an emergency kit for the wedding, needles, thread, bandaids...wear your shoes a lot before the wedding, break those suckers in so that the wedding party is not cripled, hobling and wounded by nights end. Ms Goodall reminds the M.O.B. constantly that her mantra must be, "Whose wedding is this anyway?" It is your daughters and this book simply is a gem to help you arrive at the 1st anniversary sane, happy, with beautiful heartfelt memories, and a lot of laughter.I smile everytime I think about this book, and Sherri Goodall's sweet, heartfelt, loving, great, jovial advise. Where else can you go to get such advise as The Big Picture, or Trying to stay focused while flinging away money? If I have a choice between laughing or crying myself through this event, please Lord, let me laugh and Sherri Goodall has been my saving grace.

The authors end on a glum note, and maybe are justified when looking at the wasteland of higher education, but since the 1990s Homer has been resurrected in K-12 classical education! In fact, that's one of the few things that gives me hope for the future of the American republic. Home schooling has grown tremendously, and mostly focuses on a classical approach, Christian classical schools are flourishing, and charter (public) classical schools are springing up all over the country. The latter is especially encouraging to me because there is no greater antidote for postmodern relativism than a classical education, and in classical charter schools kids are being taught that Truth and objective reality exists. You can't get more counter culture in our day.As for the book, I learned a lot I never really knew about the Greek worldview, or had it put a new way that I found enlightening. I didn't quite realize how much the Greed and biblical worldview had in common, and how much we need both in our culturally sick age.

In WHO KILLED HOMER, Victor Davis Hanson and John Heath address the pressing issue of the rapid demise and death of classical Greek learning in the west. At the time of its publishing (2001), the dire straits that Greek thought and culture found itself in have not improved a whit. If anything, the trend is toward a total obliteration of the very foundation of western civilization. Hanson and Heath have plenty of blame to lay and fingers to point, but the bulk of their ire is surprisingly enough directed at their colleagues, all of whom were charged with keeping the immortal spark of classical learning alive. They are especially angry when their colleagues insist that there is nothing wrong at all with their profession. Such misguided academics most often point to the geometric increase in scholarly articles published and conferences attended. And that, Hanson and Heath insist, is precisely the point. The scholarly articles are written in the most opaque jargon-ridden prose imaginable with no one reading them. The conferences are attended mostly by senior tenured professors of Greek and Latin who hand over their few teaching duties to underpaid and overworked teaching assistants who can only dream of the day when they too will be able to enter the sheltered life of a tenured academic when they know only too well that with the shrinking pool of college students who choose classics as a major that that scenario is very likely not to occur. And it is not simply laziness or cupidity that has caused today's teachers of classics to abandon the very barricades that were their responsibilities to maintain. Much of the problem they see as a changing mindset in the very viability and desirability of thinking like the ancient Greeks. Hanson and Heath charge modern modes of thought like post-modernism, cynicism, nihilism, and skepticism as the collective root cause in subverting a two thousand year tradition in the belief of Eternal Truths like beauty, justice, and patriotism into a witches' brew of deconstructive thought that insists that there is no solid linguistic, cultural, or historical groundfloor under our feet. All that we used to call Traditional Values are now to be seen as slipping and sliding in ways that suggest that there was nothing special or enduring about the ancient Greeks at all. They note that it is trendy for cultural relativists to insist that all cultures in all ages are equally viable and worthy of emulation. If so, then why study classics in the first place. The answer, Heath and Hanson insist, is that the relativists are wrong. When Homer was writing his ILLIAD, there was nothing like Greek ideals of polis or thought available anywhere else in the world. This, of course, does not sit well with those who decry the United States as the primary source of all the world's evil. Those who claim that are also the same ones who deny Greece as the initial and irreplaceable source of current western concepts like egalitarianism, property rights, and religious tolerance.As bad as things are, Hanson and Heath do not think them hopeless. In their concluding chapter, "What We Could Do," they list alternatives to the dissolution of their profession. Among them:1) Re-introduce the classics into high school and college curriculums2) Have senior tenured classics professors attend fewer conferences and teach more undergraduate classes3) Reduce the time to complete a Phd in classics to five years or less4) Scrap the traditional doctoral dissertation in favor of several broad papers of Greek culture5) Give tenure only to those who teach a lot rather than publish a lot6) Re-acquire the belief that the Greeks were a special people who have a great deal to say that is relevant today.On the down side, both Hanson and Heath do not believe that any of their suggestions will be implemented anytime soon. As a result, when future Greek classes will be attended only by the doddering senior professors who will preside over a legion of empty seats, then it will be evident even to these soon to be retired professors that their profession has already gone the way of the dodo.

I spent 4 years studying Latin in high school in the 1970s and loved it, as did my brother and sister. We took Latin because our mother had loved it in the 1940s. I'm a big fan of Hanson and I knew this was largely a book for those in academia, but the authors mount a stirring defense of the teaching of the classics in general and how the field might still be saved.Their advice for university scholars and mentors in the field is equally relevant to professors of the humanities now that college education is so very expensive.

Hanson has without a doubt become a polarizing figure in the 16 years since "Who Killed Homer?", but that does not take away from the strong critique of publish-or-perish humanities culture in this book. If you can cast your imagination back to a day before 11 September, this is really a fun book to read.

It is important for all Americans to understand from which ancient cultures this country was ultimately formed. The government we live under, our way of life, our views about things good and bad were ultimately the result of Greek thinking. Not Chinese, not Persian, but Greek and to some extent Hebrew. In this age history is devalued to the point where it seems we don't even wish to understand our origins. Certainly other cultures have contributed to the American miracle but we MUST understand the Greeks and Romans in order to understand where we have been and where we are going. The picture these two authors paint of the Greeks isn't always a cheery one. They made mistakes, a lot of them, but since our nature was their nature we need to understand them in order to avoid their mistakes. That's really all the authors are saying.

Even if, as the author now admits, the main argument was a bit overplayed, this is a delightful rant, bristling with wit and wisdom and marvelous asides. It remains on my "most beloved" shelf and I reread it every year or so since buying it in first edition hardcover in 1998. A downbeat message delivered in bracing, upbeat prose. Cheers.

Tony Hawks journey around Ireland is something you need to read to understand. Filled with pure, good human humor and hospitality through and through, definitely a worth while read.My biggest complaint would have to be the author's name (which he can't really control, can he?). It's almost impossible to look him up thanks to that pro skater.Also, in the center of the book are included a few pictures of his journey and people he met- however, Tony neglects to include a PICTURE OF THE FRIDGE SURFING. He explicity mentions taking it, and it's a shame we couldn't see it. Ah well.

Don't read this book unless you can stand to laugh - a lot. This is like Douglas Adams having a conversation with Tom Robbins as recorded by Bill Bryson and read by Stephan Frye. Tony Hawks is the next great voice in comedic travel journalism - amoung the other three. Read everything he has written and will write and your life will be better for it. He visits a king, attends sheep trails, tries out at a bachelor competition, goes surfing in the North Sea, falls off a wall kissing a girl and gets laid in a dog house - along with traveling the sights and back towns of the emerald isle where-in he becomes a local hero and an international legend. Plus he wins a cracking good bet in the end.

In response to a wager declared during drunkenness, Brit Tony Hawks accepts the challenge of traveling around Ireland while packing a compact refrigerator. And a book is born. In 1997, he spends one month, fridge in tow, hitching rides around the country and staying in various establishments including: B&Bs, a youth hostel, and the homes of newly acquired acquaintances. Helped by PR from a popular radio station, he and his ice box complete the quest, and in the process, he gains adequate fodder to produce this entertaining book. Although I was skeptical of the story, the fact that I laughed out loud in several places sealed the deal for me. Hawks' philosophy seems best summarized as follows: (p 9) "The trick is to be masters of our own destiny in so far as we have control and take the rest on the chin with a wry smile" and (p 46) "Heavy lifting is good for the soul but bad for the back, and tends to interfere with lolling about." Some of the funnier moments include random musings on subjects like this one about man's best friend, (p 35) "Dogs pride themselves on getting muddy and to be less muddy than your owner must be shameful" and another about a hostelmate, (p 148) "I'm against the death penalty. I believe that it is a mistake to show that killing people is wrong, by killing people. However, I'm not against the random killing of people who snore." He is just as funny when contending such things as, (p 40) "Just like an orchestra will have a Lead Violinist, most pubs will have a Lead Drunk," and then supporting the statement regularly. This should come as no surprise considering the fact he spends most of his overnight stays bevvying (beers) at local pubs. In summary, in spite of some skepticism, I found Round Ireland with a fridge to be worthwhile light reading. Also good: Me Talk Pretty Some Day by David Sedaris, I'll Mature When I'm Dead by Dave Barry, and Dubliners by James Joyce.

The author, a young comedian with wry wit, deprecating humor, and sparkling human insights, invites the reader along on his Quixotic, hitch-hiking tour of Ireland's perimeter with dorm-room fridge in tow - all in hopes of winning a tavern bet . The people he meets and who befriend him define colorful, human and inviting. Move over Frommer's and Fodor's - "Round Ireland with a Fridge" is a must-read for travelers to Ireland or anyone looking for an abundance of quality laughsRound Ireland with a Fridge.While devouring this must-read, jewel of a book, several times I reassured myself there was doubtless something better to do with my time. And read on I did to the last page, laughing once or twice a page, several times out loud. A must read for any Irishman, emerald isle traveler, Dave Barry fan - or anyone who needs a literate, uber-clever break from the woes of daily life.

I really enjoyed this book. Hawks' sense of humor is exactly what I expect of someone from Great Britain: dry and self depricating. It was a really quick read for me because I live off of this humor. I'm giving it 3 stars because this kind of humor isn't for everyone, so if you haven't read the book, I would suggest having an open mind and if you don't find it funny then still read the book. There is something for everyone to learn while reading this book.

This is a very enjoyable tale! I was a little disappointed when I found out that the "fridge" was a little cube model, not a full sized Amana, but everything else is a lot of fun. To win a ridiculous bet, Tony decides to hitchhike around Ireland with a fridge in tow. A local radio station gets wind of his scheme, and follows his itinerary around the country. He ends up having some fun adventures along the way, including lunch with some Benedictine nuns, and everybody gets into the spirit, or the "craic", of his journey. It's a fun read, with some delightful descriptions of the Irish countryside mixed in with a lot of good humor!

I loved this book!!! I love how eccentric the author is and how funny the book is. This book is the funniest book I have ever read. My poor family had to listen to me tell about it as I was reading it. Highly recommended!!!

Very fun reading. Sort of the same thing, the same funny or sweet little stories, over and over though, so I lost interest a little by the time I was 80% through it. Still totally worth buying, a different kind of story.

Great read. I am an independent producer or soon to be artist who has creativity. Making instrumentals, I find myself looping a lot and just adding things here and there. When people ask me to let them hear some of my stuff, im never ready to showcase my talents because I never actually arrange an instrumental. This book covered everything I needed to know about arranging a good song for people to enjoy. Now I may focus more time arranging songs and then actually writing songs. This is a must read for any producer or artist who doesnt have a full understanding of how to make a quality song.

Short on content, but containing some handy formalized 'rules' that reinforce best practices, it nonetheless helped advance my songwriting. The most effective advice of which was to sit down and diagram your references.

Got some good ideas about using dynamics. I think there are nuggets in here for every home recording musician.

I needed guidance to learn how to record with actually take me step by step. This book allows you to understand “why” something is happening and makes great sense out of it.

Read the book in 1 day, its short and sweet but very informative and one of the best pieces I've ever read on the subject! Absolutely worth checking out!!!

I liked this book. You probably know most of itÅ› content already but never think about it when you work with song. It is nice to get it in writing. I will use this book as a checklist in the future.
