We all grew up thinking of Timbuktu as a magical far away place that somehow was important I history (and that was before "Where in the world is Carmen SanDiego?"). The author is an experienced travel writer before he takes off on sort of a whim to visit this mythical city. He gives the impression that he has traveled in out of the way places, but in the first part of the book he spends a lot of pages griping about the inconvenience and unpredictability of transportation and lodging (or lack thereof) in getting to Timbuktu. His troubles are aided and abetted by his fixer, Mohammed. The book gets better after he leaves Timbuktu, with a fresh haircut, and heads out to hike in the rugged outback of Mali. There he bonds with his guide and his cook and their families and gets to see life as it really is, not as the imagined glories of Timbuktu. Timbuktu is a place of the imagination and a place that has been ravaged from its centuries earlier glory as a center of learning and repository of valuable manuscripts. Even before reading the book, I worried about the care of these valuable ancient pieces of learning. Now, with the invasion of fundamentalists who do not value learning, I worry more (the author was there after one takeover and before another). The book raises lots of issues. For me, the most important was the role of tourism and questioning what journey one is on.

This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. Not only is it a vacation and travel story, it is a history book on the search for Timbuktu and also a lesson on what little it takes in material possessions to have a truly meaningful life. There is a seamless integration of Rick's personal journey of discovery with the historic search for Timbuktu by various earlier explorers. Rick's vivid and penetrating description of the land and it's people places the reader right into the journey with him.I highly recommend this book to all readers regardless of their own specific list of favorite writers. An amazing journey very much worth joining Rick as he explores a world of intrigue, mystery, beauty and a way of life by people who make the most of their existence by focusing on what is truly important in one's journey through life.

Reading Rick Antonson's book on Mali took be back to 2006 and my quick trip through Mali. Having visited many of the places that Rick featured it was a great experience to witness someone who had been there before me.As a travel book I believe it to be superb and a great way to feel Mali.And lo and behold he loved the same things about the places - Mopti, Dogon, Timbuktu and Essakane - that I came to treasure. He writes very well, he experiences the real feel of the Niger River area, he captures you into his journey. And the two things that he loved most about Mali, that is Timbuktu and its manuscripts and Le Pays Dogon; his time in both locations will send me on a return trip to Mali to further experience that remarkable country. This book on Africa is as close to a real guide as anything written by Paul Theroux or investigated by Lonely Planet. I so enjoyed this book.

This brought back memories of my own travels many years ago to another part of the world. Author is a master of prose and the book contains many interesting observations about Mali and its peoples. The addendum on their current tragedies was very moving.

Mind- and life-changing - worth your time

Antonson writes an excellent travel book. It is the story of his personal journey to Timbuktu and he spares the reader neither criticism of the places or difficulty inherent in the experience. He writes in a way that I felt I was riding along in his backpack — I could smell the heat, the garbage, the questionable food. I felt the sand in my mouth, my boots, and the fatigue of riding in a crowded 4x4. I also experienced his elation when he found the sites he went to see, especially the ancient manuscripts. I enjoyed Antonson's wry humour too.This is a delight to read because it is a "story" rather than a destination book.Recommended for those who appreciate exotic places, Africa, and extreme travel. I loved it.

Part history of West Africa, part travelogue, part cautionary tale, and all adventure, Rick Antonson's book, To Timbuktu for a Haircut makes for an interesting read, The name comes from the Berber word "tin" meaning a well and "Bouctou" meaning woman with a large navel and stands for a safe water well owned by a woman with a large navel. But the word "Timbuktu represents mystery and adventure. Antonson decides to go there when he has some free time based on a comment his father made to him to go to Timbuktu for a haircut. Antonson gets there after a long trip by train, road and a river. Along the way he meets a variety of people. The adventure continues when he arrives.This book is fun to read and especially useful for anyone contemplating a trip to some unusual place. Preparation is important but also being able to adapt to the unexpected.

The concept for this trip is brilliant...as have most journeys to Timbuktu throughout history as the author clues us all into. The only moot pint I really have with the book is it peaks way too early. Because his journey is much like climbing Mt. Everest in that reaching the summit is THE story and the descent, as thrilling and even dangerous as it may become, is just not as captivating. The author reaches Timbuktu 2/3 of the way through the book.How does he keep the pace up? Trekking across the Dogon country is fine but it's more icing on the cake than the cake itself. Nothing one can really do about this as that's the journey he took but the story does lose some steam after leaving Timbuktu.Given all that, this guy can flat out write and this is a truly impressive travel essay. I look forward to his next adventure and he makes me proud I hail from Lotusland, too, when we have talented creative people like this living here.

Christopher P. Baker was born and raised in Yorkshire, England. He is a National Geographic Resident Expert and currently escorts cruise-tours of Costa Rica and Panama for National Geographic Expeditions. This book totally surprised me. there are basically two story lines running side by side. one explores a new civilization as it develops literally from the ground up. that while the other story line provides a perspective on a developed society which turns inward and barbaric. both in the same time frame, same extra-solar planetary system. the science, tech, anthropology and sociological aspects are so exceedingly well integrated into the work, just wow!i have been an avid reader of science fiction my entire life. a gift my father passed on down to me. it is exceedingly rare for me to come across a book that is so unique in both the subject matter and how it portrays the 'big picture.' anyone who enjoys smart thought provoking science fiction will absolutely be thrilled by this book.

Yeah, it was very well written, original, and earned its awards. But it's also one of the most depressing books I've read in years. So be sure you're in the mood for a downer about how human beings suck, and how everything we touch is destined to end in senseless violence.Six hundred pages, a story that spans thousands of years, and every single character we meet is in it for themselves. There literally isn't anyone, human or alien, I'd trust to water my plants while I went on vacation, much less to watch my back in a dangerous situation. And the characters feel that way about each other, too.I'm not sorry I read it, but now I need to go find something lightweight and fun to cleanse my palate.

Best hard science fiction book I've read in over 10 years. When I initially purchased the book for my Kindle Paperwhite, I didn't look at the page count and just stated reading. Two and a half days and 600 plus pages later (I do have to work), I finished this wonderful book. It's one of those books you cannot put down. I wont say anything about the story line because I hate spoilers, even little ones, all I will say is that if you like hard science fiction, you will love this book. Keep writing books like this Adrian.

No Spoilers - I'm writing this from a high level because I think this book is best read without knowing anything about it. I don't write many book reviews, but this one deserves some comments. Not many people take this kind of subject matter on anymore. This book is ambitious to say the least, and although it is not perfect, it is definitely one of the better true science fiction books I've read in many years. While not an avid reader, I probably do 25-35 books a year, predominately in the hard science fiction genre, and my passion is for first contact or books that deal with alien cultures. These seem to be hard to come by in recent years, especially when dealing with alternate psychology and ethnocentric alien subject matter.I believe that this book represents the author's first trip into the science fiction realm, being predominately a fantasy author prior to this, but man - does he do a great job. If you want to read something with alternate views from an alien perspective, this is a good read for you. Just enough science thrown in to make it very interesting, but not enough to throw off readers who aren't into that. (I could have gone with a lot more science, but I won't complain.)The story itself is on the higher end of good, but not great. I never felt a lot of emotional ties to the characters, especially the humans. I would have liked to have seen some more detail in the primary alien protagonist Portia, I think this could have helped with the emotional ties into the story. I would have also like to see more of a hero on the Human side of things. However, I don't disagree with the authors perception of humans - it is just a bitter reality to read through parts of the book where you feel the humans could be better people than they are.I really liked the ending. It was one of the rare book that I was unhappy to see ending - even at 600 pages. I'm really hoping to see a follow up to this. I'm definitely adding this very talented author to my favorites list.

Interesting look at the history associated with the woodworking. If you want to know "why" more than "how" associated with Shaker furniture, this is an interesting read. I read the sections that interested me but will keep it around and maybe look at this again when I start another shaker project

I bought this book to read about Shaker furniture but it turns out to be much more. It contains well researched information on the Shakers philosophy and way of life - comparison of the Shaker style to Scandinavian and Victorian styles - introduction to the Shaker Villages and some of the most notorious craftsmen, and good information about the numerous depicted furniture. All written in plain and very readable text accompanied with beautiful photographs. Excellent book.

This was an excellent book. I enjoyed reading it as well as studying the colored pictures. It gave a good history of the Shakers. I wanted to know more about Shaker furniture so I could help explain to my clients why they would or wouldn't want to do a shaker style in their home. This book gave me the info I needed but wasn't too drawn out. It has many photos of lots of furniture from case pieces to tables and chairs. This was a good value.

Although the Editorial seem to deliver a book with many details for the construction of shaker furniture, the book merely contains very few pages with very basic techniques. You will not find any plans/measurements or proportions. The book contains many pictures you can use as a resource book. For the people interested in the style itself, the book is outstanding from the historic point of view and very well printed and edited.

Well researched, well written and beatifully photographed, this is a carefully and respectfully written look at an often little understood and underappreciated aspect of American social and design history.

Ignoring social determinants [of health] is equivalent to treating patients with unwashed hands and wondering why disease keeps spreading.”“How Neighborhoods Make us Sick” follows through on this analogy, outlining the social determinants of health, interlaced with Squires and Lathrops’ narratives of their experiences running and expanding a free healthcare clinic for needy patients in Atlanta’s Westside, many of whom experience interlocking disadvantages in nutrition, housing, education, employment, geographic and economic mobility, and racial injustice -- experiences which are a common feature of life for America’s urban underclass.Squires and Lathrop show that the traditional contemporary American healthcare model, with its emphasis on rigid appointment structure, careful adherence to insurer policies and limitations, and brief diagnostic visits followed (almost exclusively) by either pharmaceutical or surgical interventions, does little to help the health of those in poverty and in otherwise disadvantaged communities. An expanded healthcare model can better serve these communities by providing long term therapy for mental and physical health, counseling and assistant for housing and employment, homeless sheltering, healthy and free or reduced-cost food, community outreach, and careful case tracking and management when these services are centrally located (similar to the “campus model” of welfare services embraced elsewhere by some progressive county governments). The authors provide a roadmap for these facilities, using their own revamped clinic as an example.In the final chapters, Squires and Lathrop confront the limitations of reliance on local charitable services such as their own, and urge readers to engage in national healthcare reform. Until we do so have, we have “implicitly accepted the fact that the poor and uninsured have shorter and unhealthier lives as a necessary consequence of our health care system.”This is a great read on the challenges of treating disadvantaged communities, particularly for those with an evangelical Christian perspective.

It’s no surprise that the lack of access to quality preventative health care caused by poverty affects a persons physical and/or mental health. What this book does is address how other factors including the stress caused by job insecurity, unstable housing, poor educational opportunities, access to healthy foods and other factors come together to prevent good health. The statistics regarding life expectancy based on zip codes was eye opening.The second part of the book offers hope in the form of programs not only at Good Samaritan but also across the country to assist people to reach the goal everyone desires - to be able to provide their families with a safe, sustainable environment in which to thrive.

Breanna & Veronica, transitioning between statistics and stories, do an exceptional job outlining the complexity of health in the United States, looking beyond the traditional healthcare ecosystem and into the socioeconomic factors that make people sick. In addition, they outline simple steps to help people go from being informed to becoming active participants in the solution. This book is a must read for anyone looking to improve their neighborhood, improve their understanding of healthcare, or become a better medical professional.

The multi-layered challenges of public health can often feel daunting to undertake. However, the authors brilliantly outline both the systemic problems in our current structures as well as offer solutions that can be implemented practically.

In a world of chaos and neverending struggle, this book provides real world data and encounters that give hope that a healthy future is possible while educating us on what contributes to our downfalls. Very well written and worth the read.

I cannot say enough good about this book. It's a mix of academic, personal, medical, sociological and more than anything, hopeful. (Although you'll no doubt find yourself caught in the hopelessness of the authors on certain pages, and chapters and even full sections, if you can lean in for the long haul, you'll land in a bounty hope and direction.) I would call this book crucial for any invested in politics, education, health, or urban life. ANY Church body should be reading this...ANY neighbor, parent, teacher, medically related field, counselor, civic worker... would find it beneficial, as well. It's an incredibly well researched book that's brave and vulnerable and a massive gift to present and future generations. "How Neighborhoods Make Us Sick" is a good read on addressing the social, economic, spiritual, physical, and other ills of our society by acting locally. The authors, employed in the healthcare industry, cover many topics in their book, including:1. Various ways our communities suffer: economic, environmental, educational, social, etc.2. How poverty affects people of all classes.3. Suggestions for revamping healthcare (for example, running a productive health care center in the community).4. Ways unsafe housing affects lives.5. Practical suggestions for how individuals can get involved in changing peoples' lives.The book is well-written, contains some Bible verses to reinforce a point (without twisting verses out of context) and is full of ways lives are adversely affected, ways organizations and individuals are trying to improve lives, and full of practical suggestions (unlike other Christian titles I've read on various topics that are long on pious platitudes and short on practical application).Will read more deeply in the future and is a helpful reference for the follower of Jesus Christ who wants to make a positive impact in God's Kingdom in practical ways.
