I was searching for a book on line when I came across this book. The book is a reprint of a book published in 1918 by Gilbert L. Wilson. Wilson was pursuing a doctorate in anthropological studies at the University of Minnesota and decided that for his thesis he would study the agricultural practices of the Mandan-Hidatsa Native American culture. Wilson had already been a missionary among the tribes and had collected historical artifacts for the American Museum of Natural History.Wilson chose for his study to interview a Hidatsa woman, Maxi’diwiac or in English, Buffalo Bird Woman, who was born about 1839, and who had always and still was at 75, been a gardener/farmer for her family. Her son was Wilson’s interpreter and also contributed some drawings to illustrate points of his mother’s conversation. The interview was conducted over several years actually. When Wilson’s book was first published it was called Agriculture of the Hidatsa Indians, An Indian Interpretation.Wilson faithfully recorded Buffalo Bird Woman’s recollections, using her words as well as they could be interpreted and for an older book it is easy to read and quite fascinating. It is written in the story telling mode that many Native Americans find easy to use, but it is all factual information. Buffalo Bird Woman is careful to remind readers that this is how her family and she herself did things and sometimes mentions how other families differed from hers.The Hidatsa tribe Buffalo Bird Woman belonged to lived at the headwaters of the Missouri river in the Minnesota-North Dakota area. The Hidatsa tribe’s agricultural practices were probably pretty typical of Northeastern Native Americans. And in her early adulthood her tribe had little influence from white settlers.When Wilson interviewed her in her 70’s Buffalo Bird Woman was still mentally sharp and physically active. Her thoughts were well organized and she was very through in giving information. She talks about each of the five crops they typically grew, corn, squash, beans, sunflowers and tobacco in great detail from preparing the ground, to how they selected good seed, to cultural practices to harvesting and even how they cooked the crops.I found the agricultural knowledge the native people had to be amazing and I loved the humor and little insights into tribal relations that she included in her story. Besides gardening she told how certain tools were made- such as how they made baskets from the scrotum of a buffalo. The lifestyle was very rigorous for women, who did most of the gardening, and it was sobering how much time and effort went into growing and storing food in earlier times. However Buffalo Bird Woman never complains about the work and seemed to enjoy gardening.I was interested in the “watchers stages” that were a part of every corn plot. When land was cleared a tree was left near the center of the field and a platform was erected 4-5 feet off the ground on the shady side of it. When the corn was starting to ripen two women, usually younger girls, would sit on the platform to guard the corn from crows, horses and young boys. They sat there all day until the crop was harvested. As they sat there they sang to the corn frequently because it was thought that the corn grew better if it was sung to. The girls often made up songs teasing young men who hung around trying to court the “watchers”. Buffalo Bird Woman includes some of the songs she remembers.That Native Americans had separate varieties of corn which they knew to grow in separate plots so they didn’t mix and that they knew about allowing fields to rest and how to save the best of the crop for seed was interesting. So was the fact that they fenced their garden areas. I also found it fascinating that they didn’t allow animal manure in their gardens. Horses were allowed to graze in the corn fields after the ears were harvested but any manure they left was picked up and thrown out of the garden. If you are interested in farming history or origins of American crops, or you enjoy reading about Native American customs this book will give you much enjoyment. It includes some photos from the early 1900’s and drawings. I bought mine as an e-edition on Amazon ($2.99) but I understand a hard copy is available. It’s pretty inexpensive.

This is a unique and irreplaceable book. In the early 20th century, the author interviewed Buffalo Bird, an old Hidasta Indian woman about Indian farming methods in the mid 19th century. The result is a primer on how the Indians grew corn and other crops on the Great Plains. Interspaced with the explanation of agricultural techniques are charming stories, songs, recipes, and ancedotes told by Buffalo Bird. She also describes how the Indians preserved their crop.The Hidasta lived in North Dakota and this book is a primer on how to garden in the State without recourse to chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or motor powered equipment. The Hidasta grew five crops: corn, beans, squash, sunflower seeds, and tobacco. Their methods of cultivation, storage, and usage of each crop is described, usually with enough detail to be copied by the modern low-impact sustainable agriculturalist. A large number of illustrations and photographs supplement the text and show how the Indians built fences, dug storage pits, dried squash, and laid out their fields.A good introductory essay introduces the Hidasta, Bird Woman, and the author to the reader. The whole book is only about 150 pages, but there's a wealth of cultural and agricultural information here presented in a charming and easy-to-digest format.Smallchief

Buffalo Bird Woman recounts her gardening and harvesting traditions in this wonderful sociological record, as told to Gilbert Wilson. She covers the planting, tending, harvesting and use of corn, squash, beans and tobacco, as practiced by herself and the other members of the Hidatsa Indians around the turn of the century. Garden plans are included, as well as some pictures and sketches of tools. So clear and informative that I was able to copy her growing techniques in my own garden, to great effect. A pleasurable read! Buffalo Bird Woman's personality shines through in this lovely book.

Interesting book about gardening and life in an Indian community at the turn of the century. In my reading, after the community had been "modernized" in a lot of ways by US government programs, gardening provided an outlet for the community to preserve some of it's traditions and stay connected to the land and it's rhythms.In addition, there is good practical advice if you have a bit of land and want to do some pesticide-free gardening. You'd need at least a few good acres to really implement the whole approach - which involves growing sunflowers, corn, squash, and beans alongside each other. But still a good amount of information that should be useful even if you're working with a smaller backyard plot. Also has some recipes!

This is one of my favorite books ever. I don't even know how to review it, I like it so much. Basically it's the story of pre-white contact Hidatsa agriculture from a Hidatsa woman as told to a fairly enlightened missionary. The missionary worked with her to make very nice schematics of the agricultural methods. Where she doesn't know things, she just said "I don't know" and the missionary did the same. It's very honest and interesting. It's a priceless piece of Hidatsa culture that should really come in handy to the Three Affiliated Tribes today.

I think every gardener should read this book, as historical reference and to gain a greater appreciation of the effort to feed one's family without a grocery store. Encouraged me to plant the Three Sisters this year with heirloom seeds. Fascinating glimpse into the not so distant past.

Not exactly what I expected, but some good material in it.

This book made me laugh. It was enormously entertaining.I have a lot of "dooms-dayer" and "prepper" friends and family members who are strong believers in the apocalypse and that right now is the time to stock up on food, water, guns, ammo, cigarettes, and tampons.And before this book, those ideas just didn't speak to me. Not even remotely.So I read it to become more educated about the mindset of the "dooms-dayers," and perhaps gain some insight on how to best prepare for an apocalyptic scenario, or at least the moment WSHTF.Mission accomplished. This book delivered both outcomes for me. It also cracked me up, and made me quite grateful for my life, however temporary it may be.After reading it, I walked away feeling all the more committed to living my life with the intention of making the world better, as opposed to preparing for my potential doom or limping survival.Here's a beautiful, apt, and terrifying snippet that sums up the essence of what I gleaned from the book:"On every highway, there's a drunk driver hurtling at 80 miles an hour in two tons of steel. In every neighborhood, there's a thief armed with a deadly weapon. In every city, there's a terrorist with a bloody agenda. In every nuclear country, there's a government employee sitting in front of a button. In every cell in our body, there's the potential to mutate into cancer. They are all trying to kill us. And they don't even know us. They don't care that if they succeed, we will never know what tomorrow holds for us.The tragedy of life – robbing it of its fullness and brilliance – is the knowledge that we might die at any moment. It's almost like reading a too-true fiction. I definitely recommend reading it if you're interested in the subject.With that being said, I do not agree with the deliberately provocative title, even though I think it's a great curio. This book is not likely to save my life - but some of the ideas this book offered just might be worth pursuing well before the moment WSHTF.

This is kind a wild read, but it's a good read. If you are a prepper, or just worried about where this world is headed, read this book. As someone who would not describe myself as paranoid, I often feel paranoid when I am buying bugout bag items or working on survival skills. Reading this book put a lot of those things in perspective and gave me a lot of good ideas about how to avoid becoming a victim in the event the word goes to sh!t. This is not a survival book. It's a journey worth reading.

This book is really about the author's journey to self-reliance in disaster scenarios with some of his "aha" moments along the way. It has a "Game" flavor to it if you've read that book. I suspect some of the research is now pretty much out of date since it was done a decade ago . In the book, the author lives in fear and addresses it with learning and experience. It's a pretty awesome journey. This is a single guy's view and much doesn't apply much to working families so it came up short for me. If you are single, have lots of free time (e.g. no full-time job), focus, and the money, you too can do all the things in this book in a 2-3 years.

I really enjoy Strauss's style of writing. It's a fun narrative with factual information intertwined. I have read just about every book he has written at this point. His journalistic style keeps my attention and his dry sense of humor is pretty aligned with mine. It was a good book for me...I think you'll enjoy it too.

Great, great book. Much like The Game, and The Truth, Emergency is written in an autobiographical fashion. Neil Strauss dives deep into the world of Survivalist culture.Neil has a way to write in an entertaining, easy-to-read manner. While the book isn't exactly a step-by-step guide, Neil dives into the many different forms of survivalist culture, from Elites getting second passports to lock-picking expert "urban survivalists". Towards the end, Neil utilizes all the skills he's picked up along the way, stepping into action when a true catastrophic event lands on his doorstep.It wouldn't be a Neil Strauss book without discussing relationships. Neil includes how his ever-consuming survivalist lifestyle affected the relationship for better and for worse with his then-girlfriend. Very entertaining.Even if you read it for strictly entertainment purposes, you will find this book amazing. If you are a fan of Neil Strauss, I highly recommend this book.

Great book, not what I expected. As a matter of fact, at first skip I thought I made a mistake. I was looking for lots of survival techniques and tricks. Turns out, it is about how to learn all these things, and what you might not have thought was necessary to learn. So in the end, I read it straight through, and was impressed by what he accomplished.

An OK book, It has some typos and some concepts that are not that well explained. It's Ok if you have an Italian teacher to guide you and correct some of the subjects.I prefer Italian Demystified if you want to study on your own.

Studying Italian as an adult is challenging, to say the least. I've studied on my own, been to an immersion course in Italy for two weeks, and listened to CDs. Though all of those things help, I think this book has been the greatest benefit, so far. There is a mix of approaches and no rote memorization - other than what a person has to do to learn vocabulary. I do think that having the basics of present tense in essere, avere, and fare is HELPFUL (just make a little cheat sheet on a 3x5 card) but it is not necessary (non bisogna). The answers are in the back of the book and it is good, I think, to work through a section at a time in each chapter to feel I am on the right track. Again, this book is not the typical ... My name is, How are you, etc. Though these phrases are in the book, they are incorporated in a much more natural way. Buona fortuna. (P.S. if you have a smartphone or iPad, I have found it helpful to use a translation app **just to check** a certain word here or there. No cheating!)

This is the BEST basic Italian book I have seen in my 6 years of study. I am thinking of using it to teach others. I love it because it teaches you the way you learned English, in context. By that I mean it does not start with verb conjugation though it does cover it well in the book. Pronouns are used early and made a natural part of things. For adult learners the text is REAL not about the typical young adult subjects. On top of all this the price is reasonable.

The book tends to throw a lot of grammatical detail early on and only much later actual practice writing. The students need more vocabulary and conversational phrase work earlier on. Also, there are no pictures, which means that the student focuses upon translation, not direct acquisition. People remember with pictures and in contextual situations.There are inconsistencies in explanations and several typos. However, the ongoing Lettura saga is fun and the progression eventually leads to learning the language.

I got the book for a class I was taking, the book is good, but frankly my low review is related to the page #'s on the electronic version do not all align with the print version- this is a huge pain in the ass when trying to use this book for class.

I have another Italian textbook, from a college class. It's excellent. This one, however, is better. I'm very impressed. The progression of the chapters makes so much sense to me. I'm retaining a lot more than the last class/text.

I really like the way the book is laid out. Lessons, exercises and then answers in the back. It has been very helpful to me during this review ( for some of the lessons) and learning for the others.

Inexcusably more expensive than other languages in the same series. But so good as to be indispensable to the self-taught learner.

James Oseland is the editor-in-chief of World Food, a book series launching from Penguin Random House in 2019. Prior to that, he was the editor-in-chief of Saveur, America’s most critically acclaimed food magazine. This memoir begins when author James Oseland is a 14-year-old nerdy film buff whose main companion is his See’s Candies-loving mom. It’s at this age that his alcoholic dad decides to leave the family—poof…Pops cleared out his stuff when James and his mom were at the movies—without a hint or discussion. This upending crisis in Oseland’s life, and his recollection of the pain and loneliness, is the most profound part of Jimmy Neurosis to this reader, though I found the entirety wonderfully entertaining and intriguing. The descriptions of the early punk rock scene and the hotbed of cruising in pre-AIDS San Francisco are page-turning. I appreciate Oseland’s brutally honest self-reflection, and the gritty details of truly alternative life decisions (like moving to NYC to stay with a much older man after he passed his high school equivalency test, all with the approval of his parents), proving there’s more than one route to success and well-being.

I read this book in one sitting. We are lucky that the author survived his teenage reckless punk years. And that he allows us to go with him on his journey. He recounts with incredible honesty and rawness his feelings and actions from being harassed, to being sexually irresponsible, to participating in dangerous punk clubs, to learning life lessons in the most unfathomable places. And always knowing he had his mother’s love, no matter what. I feel lucky that Jimmy let me go with him to all these places from darkness to relief and hope.

Every thought, every word, that "Jimmy "shares with us in this shattering, enlightening tale of his escape from the chains of his crummy, merciless adolescence is true. True to himself and to his constant quest to uproot that truth in everyone and everything surrounding him. And it is this pure, unrelenting, breathtakingly real fight for his life, to survive and then ultimately conquer and transcend all of it, that sets this book, it's young narrator and it's courageous author well on their way to blazing a trail for an endless number of readers to walk with them. Not just what was going on in his head and body, but what things were and looked like and how they sounded – he brings us a vivid and visceral account of the punk scene in San Francisco, the turmoil in the air with the dramatic Bay Area news stories of the day (Patty Hearst’s kidnapping, Jonestown, Milk & Moscone murders and more) and of the more mundane high school bullying and tedium, and of family struggles.This is a great coming of age story and you should read it! I’m looking forward to reading the further adventures of Jimmy Neurosis, so I’m hoping he’s busy working on the next volume.

In this affecting memoir, James Oseland channels his teenaged self, transmitting the turbulence that every young person experiences, but anchoring the narrative in his own specific experiences as a gay teen in the San Francisco of the 1970s, at the start of the punk rock movement.
