An OK book, It has some typos and some concepts that are not that well explained. It's Ok if you have an Italian teacher to guide you and correct some of the subjects.I prefer Italian Demystified if you want to study on your own.

Studying Italian as an adult is challenging, to say the least. I've studied on my own, been to an immersion course in Italy for two weeks, and listened to CDs. Though all of those things help, I think this book has been the greatest benefit, so far. There is a mix of approaches and no rote memorization - other than what a person has to do to learn vocabulary. I do think that having the basics of present tense in essere, avere, and fare is HELPFUL (just make a little cheat sheet on a 3x5 card) but it is not necessary (non bisogna). The answers are in the back of the book and it is good, I think, to work through a section at a time in each chapter to feel I am on the right track. Again, this book is not the typical ... My name is, How are you, etc. Though these phrases are in the book, they are incorporated in a much more natural way. Buona fortuna. (P.S. if you have a smartphone or iPad, I have found it helpful to use a translation app **just to check** a certain word here or there. No cheating!)

This is the BEST basic Italian book I have seen in my 6 years of study. I am thinking of using it to teach others. I love it because it teaches you the way you learned English, in context. By that I mean it does not start with verb conjugation though it does cover it well in the book. Pronouns are used early and made a natural part of things. For adult learners the text is REAL not about the typical young adult subjects. On top of all this the price is reasonable.

The book tends to throw a lot of grammatical detail early on and only much later actual practice writing. The students need more vocabulary and conversational phrase work earlier on. Also, there are no pictures, which means that the student focuses upon translation, not direct acquisition. People remember with pictures and in contextual situations.There are inconsistencies in explanations and several typos. However, the ongoing Lettura saga is fun and the progression eventually leads to learning the language.

I got the book for a class I was taking, the book is good, but frankly my low review is related to the page #'s on the electronic version do not all align with the print version- this is a huge pain in the ass when trying to use this book for class.

I have another Italian textbook, from a college class. It's excellent. This one, however, is better. I'm very impressed. The progression of the chapters makes so much sense to me. I'm retaining a lot more than the last class/text.

I really like the way the book is laid out. Lessons, exercises and then answers in the back. It has been very helpful to me during this review ( for some of the lessons) and learning for the others.

Inexcusably more expensive than other languages in the same series. But so good as to be indispensable to the self-taught learner.

This memoir begins when author James Oseland is a 14-year-old nerdy film buff whose main companion is his See’s Candies-loving mom. It’s at this age that his alcoholic dad decides to leave the family—poof…Pops cleared out his stuff when James and his mom were at the movies—without a hint or discussion. This upending crisis in Oseland’s life, and his recollection of the pain and loneliness, is the most profound part of Jimmy Neurosis to this reader, though I found the entirety wonderfully entertaining and intriguing. The descriptions of the early punk rock scene and the hotbed of cruising in pre-AIDS San Francisco are page-turning. I appreciate Oseland’s brutally honest self-reflection, and the gritty details of truly alternative life decisions (like moving to NYC to stay with a much older man after he passed his high school equivalency test, all with the approval of his parents), proving there’s more than one route to success and well-being.

I read this book in one sitting. We are lucky that the author survived his teenage reckless punk years. And that he allows us to go with him on his journey. He recounts with incredible honesty and rawness his feelings and actions from being harassed, to being sexually irresponsible, to participating in dangerous punk clubs, to learning life lessons in the most unfathomable places. And always knowing he had his mother’s love, no matter what. I feel lucky that Jimmy let me go with him to all these places from darkness to relief and hope.

Every thought, every word, that "Jimmy "shares with us in this shattering, enlightening tale of his escape from the chains of his crummy, merciless adolescence is true. True to himself and to his constant quest to uproot that truth in everyone and everything surrounding him. I'm still reading this book but it has very valuable information. Helping me take steps to prepare for my divorce and dealing with narcissist. I just now found out in my 12th year of marriage that my husband I a narcissist. Now I know why the lying, no empathy for anyone, always the wounded one and not caring anyone but himself. I'm not crazy. Hope this helps.

Read "Stop Walking on Eggshells" if you think you're up to the daunting task of salvaging a marriage to a borderline. Read Splitting if you want to know how to get out safely. Buy a copy for your lawyer. Read it cover to cover and make sure he or she does the same. It is invaluable.The single most crucial piece of advice I obtained from this book is to ensure that all of your legal pleadings focus on specific, factual descriptions of your borderline spouse's actual conduct. Words, gestures, actions, inactions. Don't try to convince the judge your spouse is a rage-filled maniac by saying "my spouse is a rage-filled maniac" - show the judge your spouse is a rage-filled maniac by detailing the exact things she (or he) has done or said to you. Let her (or his) conduct speak for itself. The best advice for anyone divorcing a personality-disordered spouse is to read this book, then read it again.

I found this book to be very essential in guiding my approach to my divorce, even to hiring my attorney. When one is in a relationship with a narcissistic borderline abuser, it clouds your mind and you are confused. You do not address your needs during the relationship because of how you are treated. The list goes on and on as far as how narcissists dehumanize you and turn you into less of a person and more of an object for them to use. Looking back, I felt I was so numb because of the abuse that it effected my medical, mental health, financial stability and decision making.Then suddenly divorce comes into the picture, and you have to make decisions for yourself and your protection. My divorce was one of the toughest fights I ever have done, and divorcing an abusive narcissist borderline definitely added to how difficult it was. But this book helped me think clearly, made me not feel as alone as I thought I was, and taught me how to approach almost every situation when dealing with a narcissist/borderline in divorce.I was very thankful for this book, and very thankful for my attorney who I was able to communicate with clearly when it came to my fears of my very sick ex-wife and her lies. My attorney and this book hand-in-hand helped me to survive and practically win the financial part of my divorce. The emotional toll was difficult, and to some extent I am still dealing with it since the divorce was finalized in the spring of 2018, but that is a work in progress.Highly advised to those who are divorcing a narcissist borderline, be it male or female. Their behaviors and psychology are text book, but with this book you will succeed.

Must read book for anyone dealing with a high conflict spouse and seeking divorce. Read this before you settle as it will make you aware of situations that may need to be addressed in much greater detail in the divorce. Critical read if you have children and a high conflict spouse. I also recommend Divorce Poison and Why Does He Do That?

Scary stuff. Wish I had read this book before I planned my escape. My advice guys, if you deal with someone who is constantly playing the victim role and blames everyone especially you for how horrible their life is, get this book. Ladies if you have the guy who runs your life, won't let you do anything without his permission and knows everything and is smarter then everyone. Get this book before you discuss divorce or seperation. It may not only save you money, but your sanity as you are accused of everything under the sun. You will learn to hate the word "process" if you have to deal with these types of people.

I really wish someone had recommended this book to me early on in the divorce process. Regardless, it helped a lot and made dealing with this type of person “easier.” (Note I did not say easy because that’s never the case.). If you even THINK you may be dealing with a Borderline or Narcissitic Personality Disorder spouse, BUY THIS BOOK. You will swear, like I did, that the author has personal knowledge of the person you are dealing with. It is uncanny. Great book!

Before one reads this book, I believe it useful to know who Ivan Illich is: an anarchist. This very much shows in his reading as he vehemently opposes any kind of dependent relationship, which he defines in this book as one's relationship with a health-care system. This book was also published in 1976 so some of the issues that Illich brought up have been or are being remediated. While I am a medical student and do not agree with most of Illich's arguments due to personal experiences as a healthcare provider, patient, and liberal, he does inspire a reader to ask questions about their life and to what extent one should let another influence their very life essence. He inspires a reader to recognize that they have control over their health that can help one live more mindfully and in a way more in line with personal interests. While I do not agree with some of Illich's conclusions in the book (such as allusions towards foregoing medical care even if it means a significantly shortened lifespan or decreased quality of life when that is avoidable or accepting a willingness towards early fatality if this means avoiding being labeled sick), this asking of questions is extremely important for anyone receiving care as healthcare providers can provide interventions that are not necessarily comprehensible for someone outside (or inside) the system.His approach to making arguments appears to be evidence-based, although upon review of the sources he lists, he appears to predominantly pick only the parts of literature that he wants, creating an information bias as many articles present several sides to a particular issue. For a reader, it is of course apparent how Illich feels about the medical professions. This is alluded to in the title (with the medical field being the nemesis).Ultimately, Illich inspires one to ask questions and take personal charge in their well-being, something that is important because as I have directly experienced as a patient, medicine is not risk free, can happen very fast, and can be incomprehensible. Further, medicine does not provide all the answers and there are things that patients, as I have experienced, have to take care of themselves, such as evaluating smoking habits, diet, alcohol consumption, following post-surgical advice, etc. There are also times when patients must accept challenging circumstances (we cannot be healthy forever), which Illich very much believes in (albeit to an extreme alluding to people foregoing any sort of medical label, thus avoiding healers, so they may learn to better handle what happens to them). At the end of the day, it is important for all of us to make a decision based on what is in our best interest, whether that be foregoing or accepting medical care. This book shows people that they do not have to do what the man/woman/gender nonconforming individual in the white coat says. It is really up to us regarding what we want to happen to us.If anyone is seeking a complete review from a more established healthcare provider, Dr. Lewis Thomas wrote a particularly good review called "Rx for Illich." If one googles Lewis Thomas Rx for Illich, one can find it.

This book is the classic critique of our healthcare system and how it has alienated us from true well being. I would tend to disagree with some of his very Roman Catholic positions, but on the whole, you cannot get around this book if you want to start to understand why our healthcare system is so totally out of control.

Illich is a perceptive man who clearly understands the systemic impact because the medical emperor is not wearing clothes. We all stand in the same awe of "Modern Medicine" as the court collectively appreciated the emperor's new clothes. Illich's thinking is as sharp and precise as a scalpel. When you go to see the doctor, ignore that man behind the curtain.

Even though this book was written in 1975 it contains all the main issues related to the way the health industrie is structured and why at times creats more illness than what it is able to cure. It is one of the best critics I have read on the health industrie. Highly recommended.

This highly referenced text, orginially written in the late 70's, outlines a well presented documentation of why medicine has not positively impacted modern life. Illich argues that iatrogenic illness is far more common than we realize. It's a must read for anyone intersted in the evolution of our views on "disease" and what constitutes health!

That plot is simplicity itself. Their adversary, the Egyptian chaos god Apophis, will destroy the world in a few short days. Apophis is too powerful to be defeated directly but fortunately he does have a weakness, an Achilles' Heel. To exploit this weakness the siblings Kane will have to journey to many places in the mortal realm and beyond.But Riordan hides the familiarity of the plot quite deftly. Threads and relationships that have been set up in previous books are advanced in entertaining and unpredictable ways. The wonderful reimagining of ancient Egyptian myths continues to unfold with undiminished speed and skill. Action sequences (a real Riordan specialty) come thick and fast and are well choreographed and seem somehow realistic, as contradictory as that sounds given the highly unrealistic premises. We also have a new minor villain, the ghost Setne, with a promise of greater things to come in the future.All in all, fast paced entertainment with likeable leads the reader can really root for both in their world saving tasks and their complex personal lives. Riordan has hinted strongly in this book that the Kane universe and the Percy Jackson universe are one and the same and that the Kanes and Jackson are due for a crossover in the future.Highly recommended for all ages. The book has been out for only a few weeks but is approaching 100 reviews. If you haven't read the previous Kane novel start with The Red Pyramid and work forward.

I love this entire series...Rick Riordan wrote a great trilogy bringing Ancient Egypt into modern times. As a parent, what I like the best about this series is that my kids learned Egyptian history and mythology without realizing it...sort of like slipping a vitamin into mashed potatoes. The kids ate it up and learned something at the same time. I took my kids to the Field Museum in Chicago shortly after my oldest read this series, and I was amazed at how much she knew...she saw statues and could immediately identify them and tell the basic story about them just because of this series.

It's a continuation of the Red Pyramid Series. It's good for ages 10-15, boys and girls. The easy, language is not too challenging except for the foreign names. It provides background for Egyptian mythology and doesn't confuse other civilization's mythology into the book. It continues Riordan's good but not overbearing humor. It's not a comedy book. The main female protagonist is strong, snarky and loyal. There is a brainy, hopeful male character who balances her. The plot is different from the first two books, nor was it a logical step from the rest of the series. The first half tried to pull together plot points that the previous books had left unfinished, without the strong narrative that the first two did so well. The second half of the book seemed less polished, in that some places they visited were too unexplained, but then others were delved into too deeply. The ending was overly dramatic and didn't need to be. Like some of his other books, he ends up losing sight of the main goal, because he brings in too many unresolved plot threads from the previous books. It would be good for a gift if the whole series accompanied it.

Apophis is rising and chaos is about to destroy the world. And only Carter and Sadie Kane can stop him. But the only ones left to stand with them are the young magicians of Brooklyn House as their allies are being attacked, the House of Life is divided and on the brink of the civil war, and the gods themselves stand apart. To put an end to Apophis they need to find a spell that has been lost for a millennia and the only one that can lead them to it is the ghost of a deadly magician. Can Carter and Sadie do the impossible one last time? Or will the world fall into chaos?In this third and final book in the Kane trilogy, Riordan once again weaves his magic to create an epic battle and a memorable story. Riordan weaves a tale that will keep the reader on the edge of the seat through the twists and turns that are created, wondering and hoping that all of our heroes survive to do battle one more time. There's plenty of humor, some romance, the return of old friends, and lots of fun twists in this tale. And possibly a hint or two of future adventures to come. It's an epic read and I highly recommend it.

Beautifully laid out book. Josh takes you on a detailed tour of not only his successful small farm, Slow Hand Farm, but also 14 other small (less than 5 acres) farms. Many of the farms he profiles are run by the grandfathers/grandmothers of this industry: Eliot Coleman, Alex Peregrine, Jean-Martin Fortier, to name a few. The others are all run by farmers that may be nationally less-known, but are still pillars within their own farming communities. Josh effectively breaks down each farm in a manner that is easy to digest. He starts with the basic history of each farm, their hopes/needs/wants/desires from their farms and how they have changed or altered themselves in order to reach those goals. He then walks us through everything from basic tools on the farm, to bed prep, all the way through post-harvest washing and packing, and into the nuts and bolts of office organization.The best thing about this book is the diversity of farmers, their locations, and the ways they tackle their own farming ventures. Josh states at the beginning of the book that being exposed to a range and diversity of growing, harvesting, and packing methods will best inform a potential farm or farmer on how to grow their operation. He is right. I've never read such a book that details the intricate systems of so many different farms, all in one place. Even when meeting other farmers at annual conferences does not provide this kind of detail. Going over these various systems and strategies each farm uses would take way too long to explain, even when meeting these folks in person or actually visiting their farms. Having all of this information collected, stored, and ready-to-use in this book is an invaluable tool for any farmer seeking knowledge in how to improve their operation.It is my opinion that established farms will benefit greatly from this book, as seeing how other highly successful small farms operate (15 of them), is key to picking and choosing the most successful methods for YOUR farm. I also believe that new and starting farmers will benefit as well, but it may take a season or two of growing before all of the principles in this book, and how you may fit them into your own personal farm framework, begin to make complete sense. Like Josh says, there is absolutely no substitute for hands-on learning in the farming world. Get out there and do it, and make sure you have this book in your back pocket to reference. You will find it is worth it's weight in gold.

13 of the 15 micro-farms are all centered around annual veggies, usually micro-greens. There is still solid how-to information here for the fruit farmer and the perennial plant crowd.

This is definitely a great coffee table book or for a great read. The book is informative on how the farms are laid out, operational principles and so forth. But as a primer for how to get you going not so much. That is fine because that it seems was not the intent of the book. It just shows how other people made their particular space and goals work for them.Now if you are looking to start a mini farm it is very informational not instructive. I have to say it showed me some things I would never have thought of or would have hit on eventually.So in my opinion if you are interested in a mini farm to buy or build this is the book for you. Or if you simply like to see how others did their version of crazy.( a nod to all farmers who are told "You want to farm?! Are you Crazy?!) There are many better books of this type with more information i.e. Elliot Coleman's. Still, this is the book for the curious who are interested in investigating possible small scale farming options.

I'm a huge Sarah Ockler fangirl, and while Bittersweet wasn't as heartwrenching as her previous books, it was adorable and moving and a lot of fun.As someone who has never seen snow before, reading a book about ice skating and winter and snow and all of that fun wintery stuff was so awesome. I wanted to be in Watonka with Hudson and Bug and drinking hot chocolate and eating the weirdest yet most delicious sounding cupcakes ever.As for the characters in Bittersweet, I loved Hudson, but she did drive me crazy at some points. She would not make up her mind! Of course, you know, not that I'm able to make up my mind ever, but I did want to shake her and give her a little push in the right directions. But I loved her character growth throughout the book. I thought it was very well done and I was very happy with her decisions at the end.And the boy thing. There were a lot of awesome boys in this book, from the hockey team to Josh and Will, but my favourite was Bug. He was the cutest, most awesome little brother ever. He had the greatest quirks and I just wanted to make him my little brother. He rocked. The secondary characters in Bittersweet were all pretty amazing and three dimensional, but he was absolutely my favourite.And I have to make a quick mention of the chapter headings - they are CUPCAKE RECIPES. I seriously need to try to make every single one.Overall, I loved Bittersweet so much. There's romance and cupcakes and ice skating and it told a really great and moving story about family struggling in their own ways. If you love contemporaries, I definitely recommend Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler.

3.5 stars, would have been 4 stars but the technical figure skating mistakes were just too much.Bittersweet takes us into the life of Hudson Avery, former figure skater and current Cupcake Queen. She lives in a small town and is bursting to get out and explore the world. But what is she willing to sacrifice and who is she willing to push out of her life to make her dreams come true? And are they really her dreams or is she feeling nostalgic for her seemingly perfect past?My first Sarah Ockler book! I have Twenty Boy Summer on my bookshelf but haven't read it and after reading Bittersweet, I bought Fixing Delilah for my kindle. I love Sarah's writing style. It was like the words came off the pages and enveloped me. And oh my goodness, the description of the cupcakes at the beginning of each chapter made me crave cupcakes like no other!Now on to the actual book part! :) I really really enjoyed getting to know Hudson. She was a little selfish, but hey, what 16 year old girl isn't? Am I right? There were times when I wanted to wring her neck and other times when I just felt so bad for her and wanted to tell everyone else to JUST BACK OFF and let her be a teenager! I couldn't imagine trying to juggle all of the things that she does. There's a bit of a love triangle, but I was okay with it. Mainly because I could see how it was a natural part of the plot. It didn't feel forced and worked well.Now. I will say that I had one huge huge huge huge huge problem with the book. The technical aspect of the figure skating was just so wrong. Soooo wrong. Ms. Ockler states in her Acknowledgement that there were probably some technical mistakes and she apologizes for them but still. To an untrained eye, I'm sure that the mistakes would have gone unnoticed - ignorance is bliss and all that jazz - but for this former figure skater (me), there were mistakes that I just could not believe! Some of the things mentioned are open for interpretation for instance, what order a skater would put her jumps in her program (a triple/triple would almost always be first..rarely second), but others are just frankly impossible - a double axel/double lutz combination is not even physically possible - it can not be done! This paragraph makes me sound like I didn't enjoy the book, but the truth is even with its blatant blunders staring me in the face, I actually really liked the book as a whole. If it weren't for the technical mistakes, I would have easily given this book 4 stars.What do you think? Am I being over-critical? I hope not.Additional: I just wanted to say that there were many, many things that Ms. Ockler got correct! I really liked that she gave Hudson a triple Flip combo. It's a hard combo but not impossible and it's gutsy (and was my favorite jump when I was a skater). I also liked the way that she described the way it felt to be on the ice. She got it spot on and was probably one of my favorite aspects of the book. It made me want to get back out there because I have truly missed it! And I was also totally loving the hockey boy-figure skater girl thing. It's so true. :)

I have a feeling that Bittersweet will be one of those books that people read in very different ways. Some will read it as a "cute" book with a cupcake theme, some with grasp onto the sports themes or the small town story, while others will see it more as a divorce novel. It certainly took me by surprise--I loved Sarah Ockler's other books, but since most of the early reviews I'd read of this one had focused on the cupcake/bakery theme, I was expecting something less emotional--Bittersweet has a lot of depth and it really surprised me.The following is a quick rundown of my lovefest for this book:-It's quietly a sports novel--and handles the sports stuff so much better than most of the YA novels I've read that are marketed as sports stories.-It encapsulates the feeling of growing up in a small town in which people feel stuck so very well. By the time kids in those towns (and I grew up in one just like Watonka, minus the snow) reach Hudson's age, there's a division between those that are leaving and those that are staying, and it's largely unspoken. This was brilliantly depicted in Bittersweet. For example, this:"Somewhere in the distance, the Erie Atlantic whistles again, fairy godmother lamplight glowing on the tracks, the fleeting call of that old night bird echoing through the icy air as it finally exits the station. For as long as I live in this crazy, lake-effect, chicken-wing-capital-of-the-world town, that old train howling up at the moon will always be the sound of someone leaving, the promise of another place."-The secondary characters were fabulous. This is one of those things that makes Sarah Ockler stand out. In this novel, Dani (best friend), Will and Josh (two boys on the hockey team), Bug (little brother) and Hudson's mom all feel so real. None of them are caricatures and all have depth.-The season and place are captured so well. I've never been to upstate New York, but the exurbs of Buffalo and the miserable winter came alive for me.-The humor. So much wonderful, wry humor. Love it. For example:"W.W.H.D (What Would Hester Do)? I wonder. Then I totally laugh at myself, because Hester didn't have it so hot, either, what with all the public scorn and sneaking around. Not to mention the fact that I'm seeking advice from a four-hundred-year-old fictional character about high school boys--never a good sign."And:"Attention, ladies and gentlemen, this is not a test. I repeat, this is not a test. This is a bona fide, break-the-glass cupcake emergency."-Finally: There is a Friday Night Lights reference in this book!!!!! Okay, maybe that's just me who gets excited about FNL references. ;)I've loved all of Sarah Ockler's novels. Twenty Boy Summer made me cry and will likely be considered a YA classic at some point. Fixing Delilah warmed my heart. But Bittersweet impacted me on a personal level the most. Highly recommended.
