there are many books on the satipatthana sutta. however most are very much a focused interpretation of the sutta in light of a single teachers ideas about it. they may for example only focus on breathing or another of the practices and only vaguely touch on everything else in the sutta. some of these are wonderful books that surely can lead one to nibbana. but i have been searching for one that details the whole sutta as there's a lot more to it than just a couple of practices.bhante covers everything from start to finish. it is still colored with his own interpretation of the sutta but it's not even possible to write a commentary on a sutta without personal interpretation and he sticks to fairly traditional explanations, keeping it largely impersonal. my only critiques are:1. that he could have included the sutta itself but at least it's a widely available sutta. just web search "satipatthana" and you'll have no problem finding it. and2. that he doesn't give a definitive answer too the question of how many of the exercises you are supposed too practice and when to do them. there are a ton of exercises in the sutta and i have yet to see an author explain this problem (although i imagine analayo covers it in "satipatthana")! the wikipedia page on the satipatthana sutta gives these options:"Single-focused, successive and simultaneous practices:There are a variety of ways that one could use the methods described in the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta including: 1.Focus on a single method. The method most written about in the English language is that of mindfulness of breath. 2.Practice the various methods individually in succession. 3.Maintain breath mindfulness as a primary object while using other methods to address non-breath stimuli. 4.Practice multiple methods either in tandem or in a context-driven manner."i would add to option three that there are other options of what to pick as the primary object (it doesn't have to be the breath if one is using this interpretation, for example one could use the modes of deportment as the primary object) and then use the other methods to address whatever else arises that is not the primary object.as is typical for the author he puts everything in very easily understood wording and easily digested logic.he talks you through how to use the methods found in the sutta to see impermanence, suffering, and not self in your own life, day by day. if you follow his instructions carefully and earnestly you will start to see light shining through the cracks in the walls that make up reality. and who knows, maybe this will lead you to full on nibbana!one note: on page 96 bhante writes "Remember that you do want to die with anger". knowing enough about buddhism i'm 99.9999% sure he meant "Remember that you do NOT want to die with anger". just so everyone is clear on that point. it would be VERY bad for the path to deliberately die with anger. we are supposed to make great efforts to die without anger.update: i contacted the publisher and they confirmed it is an error that will be fixed in later editions.

I am new to mindfulness. A recent trip to Myanmar and the death of my parent made me think deeper about life, about purpose and about myself. I wasn't really seeking mindfulness or buddhism perse. Its more like I went on a trip and did some tourist activities and then realized I really liked what I saw and heard. So I came back to the States and wanted to read more. Basically, I was looking at a beginner-intermediate book (not so beginner that its like those "mindfulness for dummies" books but something that was deeper and would take you through a journey of learning)He explains everything well, which is exactly what I needed. I do wish there was a bit of history in it. I would like to know more about the life of Buddha (maybe one chapter?). The book goes right into mindfulness.In terms of mindfulness itself: it really is written in plain-English. I like how it tells you EXACTLY what sitting, walking and sleeping meditation is and what actions/behaviors you have to focus on when you are doing it.I read through it really slowly and practice it everyday now because he writes in a very encouraging way. For example, he mentions how folks who try lotus position may find it very difficult the first time around and he talks about how you should persevere. It took him a while too even though he was meditating (in another position) for decades!This was a great starting place for getting into mindfulness. As you progress and become more intermediate, it serves as a great reminder (through re-reading) of your foundation.

This book is very, very good. You don't have to be an expert and/or even a Buddhist to benefit from this book. Anybody can use these techniques. The key is that they are "GROUNDING" techniques to help get you out of your head and/or get you out of the world. Get you back into your body. Amazing, ancient techniques. Not hard at all. It covers, basically, everything in Buddhism but also you "Do" these techniques. Anyway, if you don't like this stuff, don't bother. Myself, I love this stuff.Chuck H.

I am a list-maker, and there were plenty of lists here - e.g. the 8 steps of Buddha's Path, the 4 noble truths, and the 7 factors of enlightenment. Basic help gained from the book included more understanding of meditation on the breath, staying in the present moment, and the importance of the concept of impermanence.

This is an excellent overview of the Satipatthana Sutta. All of the "Plain English" books are highly recommended. Bhante G has the ability to communicate in ways that all can understand. If you would like a more in-depth treatment of this sutta I recommend "Satipatthana: The Direct Path to Realization" by Analayo. To get a basic understanding start with Bhante G and then go to Analayo for a more scholarly treatment. Both are excellent.

Clearly written by a master and highly evolved teacher. One of the essential guidance books for the practitioner and for those who wish to practice.Highly and warmly recommended.

One of the best books on mindfulness I have read. I came away with a much deeper understanding of this practice.

I've tried 3 recipes so far and all were very good. They are healthy and use lots of fresh vegetables and fruits, fiber, and are low in fat, which makes this a good choice for people who strive to eat heart-healthy food too. The cookbook is very well organized. Large print, beautiful photographs. An example from the dessert section: chocolate cupcakes with beets(!) and chocolate frosting that uses raspberry greek yogurt. I hate beets but decided to try this recipe out of curiosity. Made a half batch. They are delicious! Finally, beets I can eat! The chocolate frosting is very interesting too (and easy). Another example from the main dish section: salmon with strawberry balsamic vinegar topping. Unusual combination but very tasty (and, again, easy). My husband loved it. We're told to eat a rainbow of colors (fruits & vegetables & grains), but it is difficult to come up with enough good tasting recipes for every day. This cookbook enables me to update my heart-healthy repertoire with some new ideas. Good for your eyes and heart. Highly recommend.

I have tried 2 of the juice recipes which turned out to be delicious. I recently cooked 1 recipe, the chicken & mushroom, which also was very good, but would have benefited from just a little bit of salt. Another recipe tried was the salad which includes butternut squash. I would never have thought to include it in a salad, but what a nice surprise! I would definitely recommend this book. The only reason it rated a 4 star is because you have to flip back & forth to look at the ingredient list vs the cooking instructions.

When you get terrified by your doctor and the words Macular Degeneration, start here. It is easy to get totally insane and want to drink herring oil while eating egg yolks and yellow peppers. Read this first. You can add yummy to your diet and not go blind at the same time. It is calming to read and helpful at the same time. Good luck!

I already knew about all the health benefits of this type of eating so my favorite thing about this book is the recipes. They are beautifully illustrated and delicious. The first one I tried was the Chicken with mushrooms and thyme. I know that there are so many chicken recipes everywhere but this one really hit the spot.

I like the way this book explains what vitamins each fruit or vegetable has that are used in the recipes.

Extremely well written. Very valuable information regarding items in each recipe for eye health. Just a terrific and informative cook book. I feel supported in my mission for better eye health.

Its basically the chapter in the Pocket Medicine made into a thin notebook. Having read and used Pocket Medicine, Pocket Neurology, Pocket Emergency Medicine, Pocket Anesthesiology and Pocket ICU, and as a graduated Cardiologist myself, it frankly leaves a lot to wish for. Yes, its a bit more up to date and refines a few rough corners, but its quite lacking. Its esentially only the chapter of Cardiology in the Pocket Medicine Book. Cardiology is a vast specilaty, complex and much much more than what this "summary" has. I suggest a review of the american and european guidelines next time, and including LOTS of the tables and diagrams in these in the next edition. Missing subjects: Adult Congenital Heart Diseases, shunt quantification and measurements, Cath Lab: left and right heart, Pregnancy and Cardiology, specially anticoagulation for pregnancy. Advanced cardiac support devices and heart transplantation, types, indications and contraindications, In summary: Disappointing.

At first I was concerned with how thin this book is compared to other Pocket Medicine notebooks, but it really has everything needed! As a PA student on a Cardiology elective, I can see carrying this for all other rotations.

Quick reference guide that pairs really well with pocket medicine.

Do have to search a little bit more than you do in other pocket books but still good info

Soul-work really doesn't change from one era to the next. What has changed is our alchemical container painstakingly formed by our modern approach to life as more liberated women (and men, as my son reminds me often). Singer has written an admirable work for the feminine and masculine aspects of today's women. This is an aspect of Jung's opus that needed balancing. Thank you, Ms. Singer.

Good Book

Although the title implies that this is a book that will benefit women only, it's actually a book for everyone who is searching for some understanding of how to find order in the often chaotic world within our modern souls.With an accessible blend of intellectual reasoning, Gnostic spiritualism and creative interpretation of dreams and fantasy, Jungian analyst Singer provides excellent suggestions on how to integrate the material and non-material worlds in our lives. She doesn't provide any answers to our concerns and anxieties, but she does encourage acceptance of ourselves as we are, with all the disparate parts that make us unique individuals. "One life," she points out, "is too short to achieve perfection and the most we can hope for is completion."I found this book reassuring, optimistic, inspiring and comforting. Reading it has left me hopeful that mankind will evolve spiritually as well as physically. Singer makes me believe that the potential of the human spirit will conquer those external divides, which are merely a reflection of the fractures within our own souls; and that, although differences between people will always remain, by changing the way we look at those differences we can overcome them peacefully.Our external reality can't change, but our perceptions of that reality can change for the better and that, in turn, creates a change in the external reality. Singer doesn't gloss over the fact that this slow inner journey - which ultimately benefits the external journey - will be hard, requiring much personal sacrifice and discipline.By combining faith, science, psychology and poetry, Singer has written a book that offers us a way to make a difference in the world, even if that difference comes from healing ourselves before we try to heal others or the greater world in which we live.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants good advice on finding a way to inner peace and who is willing to work towards integrating their inner conflicts.

Jungian analyst June Singer gives us in this book a perspective of the spiritual paths open for us in the times we live. She links these spiritual paths, through the point of view of Jung's analytic psychology, to some of the most original religious practices in christianity, namely the gnostics, but also to scientific knowledge and rational values. The aim of the book is ambitious, since the author wants to present study and knowledge, but also self-study and self-knowledge, as a whole, as doorways which can lead us, if we are not blind to the possibilities open before us, to connect spirit and reason, unconscious and intellect. Although the book is addressed to "modern women", the author does not really write about women, but her advice can be used by any person, man or woman, which is alright for me. In the realm of the spirit we won't find the superficial gender distinction. And this realm the author urges us to enter through our ordinary daily activities and routines, through or usual studies and pursues, commiting ourselves to look at them from different points of view so that we see further than what only our senses tell us. She urges us to make this commitment in order to learn about the world, about ourselves, about the spirit... and thus change the world. Study, spirit, self-knowledge as a militancy. According to the gnostics, the greatest sin is ignorance.

It's good for an overview if you're a beginner who's never heard of any of these concepts before. From the title of this book and the reviews I thought it would be a fantastic read, but it's just a summary of the title and that's it. It does not go that far in depth at all. Skims the surface of everything mentioned on the cover. If you're new to this, get it, otherwise don't waste your time. I was let down and disappointed at the lack of depth.

This is a monumental effort by a recognized historian and the result is an excellent biography of Napoleon. This is a sympathetic biography of the French Emperor and it ranks right up there with the 1971 biography of Napoleon by Vincent Cronin and the new biography of Napoleon by Michael Broers.The author gives Napoleon what the Emperor deserves-a fair and impartial look and gives Napoleon his due both militarily and as a civilian head of state. The author definitely demonstrates that Napoleon was neither tyrant nor military dictator (agreeing in fact with the eminent French historian Thierry Lentz) and also demonstrates that Napoleon was both a lawgiver and a reformer not only for France, but for those allies and satellites that either belonged to or were allied to the French Empire.What is also quite evident when reading the book that Napoleon as a head of state was vastly superior to his fellow monarchs. No other head of state in Europe or Russia guaranteed to his citizens freedom of religion, equality before the law, basic civil rights, and a law code, the justly famous Code Civile, also known as the Code Napoleon. Further, none of Napoleon's fellow monarchs even attempted the social and governmental reforms achieved by Napoleon, many of them in his first four years as French head of state.And even though Napoleon's fantastic career ended in defeat and exile, he was still recognized as the best soldier of his age, and was recognized as such by Wellington.This excellent volume is a must for anyone interested in the period and is enthusiastically recommended. It is a great read and excellent history and the author is to be greatly commended for both the effort and the product. This volume is definitely a keeper.

This is a long book that is (because of its length and weight) eminently suited to a Kindle, although if you have a tablet as well you will appreciate the fine colour illustrations and get more out of the maps.It is extremely readable and, quite often, becomes gripping. The author's style is distinguished both by clarity of expression and a mastery of the narrative art. I found it difficult to put down.Not only are Napoleon's battles depicted clearly and with an uncanny sense of the topology of a battlefield, but the author involves us in the Emperor's personal and family life, often with amusing or interesting anecdotes. The book also, without ever flagging, examines Napoleon's contribution to the fields of law-giving and the social reform that was necessary after the stagnation under the Bourbons and the excesses of the French Revolution.I can not recommend this book highly enough.

A great book about one the greatest personalities in recent history. I always thought he was similar to Hitler but after reading this I see there is no comparison. Napoleon was well versed in reading history. He lost 6 battles out of about 46. Some of the laws he established in France are still in use today.

This is a thorough and a very well written book. As a general reader, I find it a riveting read. In fact, this book has inspired me to read Napoleon correspondence.

It is a fascinating read. It is written in a style where not only, historical accuracy is at the forefront but throughout the text, are inserted vignettes that gives the reader insight into the personality of this amazing historical figure. The battle descriptions are very well done for someone who is interested in historical warfare. I found these somewhat long but I can understand their importance given the magnitude of the armies involved and the swath of territories that were at stake. In fact, I have since bought the paper copy so that I can glance at the photographs and maps at length.

One of the best biographies I read

A very detailed account of Napoleon's life, sometimes goes into a little too much depth with respect to battles in the wars but otherwise a very readable biography. You will learn new things from this biography even if you consider yourself well versed in Napoleonic history.

More about the man than the military battles. Extensive use of Napoleon's letters and those of others around him. Great read.

The time around WW1 is fascinating, and Veit brings attention to the growth of "domestic science" food reform, ans to the intense public attention paid to food during the war. Veit has found some amazing details about the period, so the book is full of surprises, and her writing is lively and reader-friendly. This would be a wonderful book for a seminar on food and nationalism, or a class on American history.

I had no idea that events leading up to WWI contributed to our modern diet. After reading the book, I had a much better understanding of my grandmothers and their attitudes toward food—which they of course passed on to my parents and eventually me. I’d love to find more books like this one. Very insightful.

Modern Food, Moral Food is an excellent resource for 20th-c. food historians. It is also very approachable for the non-academic reader. Helen Zoe Veit's work explains the complex ways that Americans came to see certain foods as having a quality of righteousness.
