Overall, it is a good book for middle and high school students as well as non-native English speakers. There is not enough material to fully prepare students for the exams/tests, but it will certainly improve the vocabulary and teach some expressions Here are the pros and cons of the book.Pros:- I liked the structure of the book. The lessons are divided by weeks and days. So, if a student is determined to study every day, the books will support his/her goal.- The new words are great. The authors actually focus on teaching the words that are not widely used. Here are some examples: "benevolent", "tenacious", "viable", "introspective", "omnivorous", "saturate", "complicity", etc.- There are sample sentences with blank spaces, where a learner is offered to place the new words.- Every lesson also has a section called "Todays' Idiom" with an explanation and a sample sentence. Here are some idioms used in the book: "to play possum", "on the spur of the moment", "to spill the beans", "like Caesar's wife", "to take by storm", "by hook or by crook", "Achilles heel", etc. As you can imagine, with 46 weeks of study (5 lessons in each), there are a lot of idioms!- There is a summary exercise at the end of each week. All answers are provided at the end of the book.Cons:- I was surprised that there are no definitions provided. They just throw words at you - go figure what does "alleviate" or "vindicate" mean. The spelling is there, but no definitions. I assume that it's easier to use a Kindle version of the book, where you can highlight a word and using the Internet, read the actual meaning of it. On the other hand, exercises are probably better in the printed version of the book - you can write the answers in the spaces provided.For non-native English speakers: This is not the only books that you will need to improve your English language skills. You may also want to check out these books on Amazon: "McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage", "Everybody writes" by Ann Handley, "How to say it" by Maggie Rosalio, "Barron's Dictionary of American Idioms", "American Accent Training" by Ann Cook, "The blue book of grammar and punctuation", and "English the American Way: A Fun ESL Guide".

I bought this in Jan/2015 as an adjunct to the latest (6th) edition of the book by the same name (1100 Words You Need to Know). I have the box set published on July/2014.The good:(1) the cards are cleverly designed with 2 words on each card.(2) it is supposed to correlate with the book for an additional layer of review.The Bad:(1) the paper is thin, flimsy, and thus these cards won't last very long with much handling. We have 4 vocabulary students in our house, and this set probably can't take that much use! An "organizer" ring is included, but with the thin paper, I anticipate the punched out hole on each card will rip easy. Lamination is an option, as another reviewer suggested. But this means more work, and more $$$.(2) I thought that by buying the latest book, and the latest vocab box set that they would match. But, already, week 1, day 2, I have found that they don't correlate (book: "technology"; cards: "etiology"). I wonder how many other words on other study days won't correlate?Conclusion:This product just doesn't seem yet ready for primetime. Be wary of buying it unless Barron's makes the cards more sturdy, and ensures that the card list matches up with the book list.

Extremely disappointed that definitions ARE NOT INCLUDED. Seriously? So I hand this to my teenager, and he has to use his smartphone to look up the detailed definitions. Why in the name of XXX are detailed definitions not included? Synonyms are NOT definitions. Sheesh.

This is a classic case of quantity trumping quality. First, the definitions are usually spartan, often (but not always) encompassing no more than one-to-three words. Most words have various nuances in meanings, and SAT often cleverly tests knowledge of words beyond the simple "sound-bite" definitions often presented here. Second, only a single definition is usually provided for words with multiple, separate meanings. A good example is the word "countenance," which is defined in dictionaries as either "appearance," or "tolerate." In these cards, only the "tolerate" definition is offered. Imagine the student smugly confident that he's mastered the definition of this word going into the SAT exam, only to find that SAT chooses the "appearance" definition rather than the "tolerate" definition presented in these cards. I could cite dozens of similar examples. Third, synonyms are not listed, except occasionally in the definitions. Here again, SAT often goes with synonyms rather than with the "headline" definitions. Finally, with some words, I have found incorrect pronunciation guides (I checked three separate online dictionaries, none of which offered similar pronunciation). I also found one word (in a definition) misspelled -- totally inexcusable in a product of this nature. However, I do laud the fact that the sample sentences given here often incorporate other words in the deck. For those seeking to beef up their vocabulary, I suggest the far superior Princeton Review products. For those wishing to stick to flash cards, the Manhattan Prep flashcards, while not offering as many words, are vastly superior, giving very detailed definitions and synonyms. The Kaplan Flip-O-Matic flashcards, while inferior to the Manhattan Prep flashcards, also better the Barron's Flashcards.

About the Author

Professor Peng Yuan is a professor at Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)Dr Faiza Annabi-Bergaya obtained a Licence-ès-Science in Physical-Chemistry from the University of Tunis in 1966, a first PhD in Inorganic Chemistry in 1971 from University La Sorbonne-Paris VI and a second PhD in Physics in 1978 from the University of Orleans (France). She is member of the AIPEA Nomenclature Committee. She was Secretary of the ECGA in 1999-2003. As President of the GFA (French Clay Group) in 2003-2007, she created the annual meetings of the GFA, organizing the first two meetings in Orleans. She launched the Series Developments in Clay Science with the publication in 2006 of Volume 1 (Handbook of Clay Science) and she is Series Editor since 2013. She is Editor-in-Chief of Applied Clay Science since 2012.

This book is absolutely a must buy for parents of prospective drum musicians in elementary school. It is thorough with the background of musical beats for percussion (drums) and easy to read for any intructor or parent wanting to guide their young musicians. When finished with this dynamic book, I predict the student will be able to play (jam) to songs and obtain much enjoyment with the connection. I am an elementary school teacher who has drummed since age 12. Now in my 55+ age range, I continue to seek improvement. I sure wish this book was out when I was young. Buy it, you'll like it! And, it comes with a DVD! Great buy for your money. Sept. 2014

Fantastic! 7-year old grandson has a drum set now and was very excited to look at the book as well as - probably more often - watch the dvd. And his non-drummer Dad/Mom/Grandparents can serve as "coaches" by using the lessons in the book [even though we're not drummers]. It's laid out really well for facilitating skills that will build on each other in time... I hunted all over looking for something like this and it looks like I found the right thing. Will report back if it fizzles, but my money's on this resource.

I ordered this book after attending a drum clinic by Rich Redmond. I can assure you this book is not just for kids. I am a 49 year old who started drumming about a year ago and found a lot of valuable information in the book as well as the DVD. Lots of great lessons and drills that will help drummers of any age. I would highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about playing drum for the first time or even a seasoned drummer looking for a refresher. Thanks Rich!

Carney gives rigorous political and social analysis a heartbeat and human warmth that is inspiring. I feel like I understand my own community better after reading his book. I take my social connections less for granted and feel more committed to my book club and girls nights. He shows how human connections make America and, more importantly Americans, more prosperous and happy. If you are worried about pervasive, hateful rhetoric on the internet or polarizing news coverage and want to know how things could actually get better, read this. Seriously.

You don’t have to be a political analyst or a politics junky to get a lot out of this book. Carney has spun all of those clunky statistics into a moving story and opened a window into a world that many of us struggle to understand.

Nothing brilliant here. The writing is tolerable, but this just struck me as the kind of fodder writing you'd find laying around a church lobby. No real substance to it beyond decrying how people don't go to church anymore and all of us heathens are getting our due.

This book is not a political polemic designed to excite either red team or blue team fevers. Rather, it is a serious attempt to understand what has been happening to a new emerging underclass that is easily missed by those of us fortunate enough to inhabit reasonably healthy communities. Carney calls on a rich combination of current and classic research and observations and combines them with his reporter’s skill for the concise interview and the illustrative anecdote. The alienated subjects of this book are found in the precincts, towns and counties that voted strongly for Trump in the early Republican primaries. Carney compares them with equally conservative areas that, while they may have voted for Trump against Hillary, decidedly favored his opponents when they had a choice of other Republican candidates. In essence, the early pro-Trump precincts are generally characterized by a lack of social capital: the absence of strong “middle institutions” such as churches, service organizations and sports, as well as low rates of marriage and family formation. It is in these precincts that the Trump message of “Make America Great Again” and it’s corollary, “the American Dream is dead” resonated. In contrast, the non-Trump Republican precincts tend to be cohesive communities with strong families and the high social trust that accompanies abundant middle institutions where the American Dream would seem to be alive and well.The obvious starting point in looking at the alienated communities is: “the factory closed”. Well, yes it did, but the problem is not entirely economic. The problem appears to be that when the factory closed the surrounding area could no longer support the diners, the churches, the service organizations and even some schools—places where people could come together and interact in a meaningful way. This is the headline, if you will. Carney dives into how it happened over time (it wasn’t instant – factories have been closing for decades) and he addresses the micro- and macro- level causes and effects. He does this without looking for villains and victims—he just seems to be looking for facts and trends. A couple of examples: When working class generations of males (in particular) lose their factory jobs, they lose more than the paychecks; "[The] skills of the unskilled factory job are the skills of marriage and fatherhood." By this he means consistency, reliability and patience. On a more macro level, neighborhoods are far less economically diverse than they were a half century ago as what Charles Murray describes as “the college sorting machine” has worked to concentrate potential community leaders in upscale neighborhoods, depriving many working-class neighborhoods of these talents.Conservative, liberal and libertarian readers will each find one or more of their sacred beliefs challenged by the research here and that is probably a good thing. For example: the conservative likely won’t care for the debunking of the notion that the poor behaviors of the working class are due to character flaws or the documentation of the decline in class mobility; the liberal won’t appreciate the discussion of the role of government in crowding out the middle institutions; and the libertarian will not be comfortable with the discussion of the role of “hyper-individualism” in upending the socially cohesive belief in “serial immortality” (which is why a soldier sacrifices for country and parents sacrifice for their children).This book needs to be approached with an open mind, capable of setting aside prejudicial notions and biases. Books like this are especially valuable for the thoughtful way in which they dissect and present the elements of our current dysfunction. That said, Carney does point out some very high functioning communities and models—some wealthy, some not. Throughout he demonstrates the critical nature of the middle institutions and the manner in which they currently define what we like to call “American Exceptionalism”. They always have done so. The book includes some insightful quotes from Alexis de Toqueville’s “Democracy in America” (which a shockingly small number of Americans have even heard about, let alone read—although they should). Among them, from 185 years ago: "There is nothing, according to me, that deserves more to attract our regard than the intellectual and moral associations of America."The solution chapter is the shortest, as is common with objective books like this. It is the partisan tomes that claim to have all the answers. Many readers across the partisan spectrum will not be comfortable with Carney’s “solution” which focuses heavily on the use of religious institutions to rebuild the social capital of alienated communities. He knows he will be challenged on this and steps out of his narrative to literally ask such critics: “What else do you got?” (I’m not sure where that bit of syntax came from, but there it is.) This book’s primary value is that it identifies and defines a serious social decay among the working class. A parallel would be Haidt and Lukianoff’s “The Coddling of the American Mind” which dialed in on an intergenerational problem with the upper middle class and above. Another complementary volume would be Michael Tanner’s “The Inclusive Economy” which is a more broad-based look at the structures that work to keep the poor in poverty.My hope is that if enough people read and think about books like these, we can begin to stop vilifying each other and have some constructive dialogue leading to positive behavioral and social change—one small group at a time.

The book Alienated America is made for elites and the political power hungry class. Instead of assuming the half of Americans who voted for Trump had logical reasons to vote for Trump, Carney, like the elites in Washington, assumes there is something wrong with voters. What social ills would cause people to vote for Trump? You can probably guess the typical derogatory answers. Ultimately, the problem is they lack social interactions and networks (social capital). The issue is not campaign statements, "Here is what I plan to do, may I have your vote?" The issue is, "Why did you vote for Trump and how can your problem be fixed?" Carney's book is steeped in superficial research data bits which outweigh and bury honor and respect for human thought. For example, research data indicates the Hajj makes people in Bangladesh feel better than those who don't get to go on a Hajj. Therefore, Americans might feel better by participating in some religious undertaking like a Hajj. The answer to the problem of Trump country is to join a church or club. If Trump voters joined churches and Rotary Clubs, they might vote for Romney next time. If you like a book that talks down to you, this book is for you.

nothing really wrong with it, the only difference between the "essentials" and the "non-essentials" dummies books is the amount of explanation. the "physics essentials for dummies" has less information since the purpose is to simple review the basics.overall the book is great if you merely needed a quick refresher after a semester of not having taken physics, but if you need a bit more than that, get the regular "physics for dummies".

My son has already found great use of this well written physics book. He is in an AP physics class in 10th grade this year and is able to use this book to further explain the depth of the math associated with his homework.With the disaster known as common core implimendted into the schools there seems to be a shortage in literature to study from. I like this book because it cuts right to the chase and offers examples and a workflow that he can formulate into his own work.If you need to supplement more litterateur into your child's studies I recommend the essential series books for "dummies". It's an incredibly useful tool and works like a subject specific encyclopedia where they can reference the table of contents and match it up to their exact needs in the subject.I did not receive any sort of discount or free item for my honest review. I'm just a consumer looking out for the interest of my children's continued growth and knowledge base.

I bought this book becasue my son was learning some physics in the 8th grade. He was solving problems involving bodies in motion. I have two engineering degrees from the mid 1980's, but it has been 25 years. He had questions and I was tired of going to Wikipedia. This book is a good, very basic intro many topics of high school & college physics. Pretty Decent on the qualitative explanations of concepts, some rather simple math is introduced, nothing much past basic trig or geometry.If you are looking for calculus based physics, or in depth analysis, this is not for you. I wish is had more worked out examples, but maybe that is just the engineer in me. As in intro for those who have a passing interest or those who want to be able to hold a conversation with high schoolers, it is just fine. If you are more into the classic academic approach (lecture from a textbook, solve problems..., finding solutions to physics problems) this book will frustrate you. There is not enough depth for that approach. For me,and for purposes of helping my son underdtand some physics basics and how to "set up" to solve some prety basic problems about bodies in motion, it was just fine.A nice read if you have an interest in the topic. it's fine for that. A

A good book for adults who want a refresher course from their college days or for todays high school students starting their studies.

while this book covers some basic principles, I was hoping for more explanations of concepts like particle theory, string theory, etc. so that I might grasp the basic concepts and differences between them.

As most of the Dummies series, this book on physics is written for those who are interested in science, but not looking for deep physical theory. As part of the series of two books, this is the essential piece of science necessary to expose the basics of motion, gravity, and other physical phenomenon.

I bought this for a non-science major physics course for added help. While it did add some information that the text didn't clarify, I ended up buying an even simpler version of this book for my Kindle that was a lot less money than I paid for this book.
