About the Author

Ryan Smithson joined the Army Corps of Engineers following 9/11 and was deployed to Iraq in 2004. Upon returning home, he began writing his memoir, Ghosts of War: The True Story of a 19-Year-Old GI (HarperCollins, 2009), which was nominated as an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. It is required reading in high schools and colleges across the country, and was adapted for the stage by the Griffin Theatre in Chicago.

Ryan did a great job again. I felt like I was in the story immediately all the way to the last page. Ryan's writing easily invoked every emotion from me. I can't wait to read more. Thanks Ryan.

I was excited to read this book because I enjoyed Ryan's first book, "Ghosts of War". Ryan graduated from the same high school as my oldest two children, just a few years ahead of them, so the fact he was local drew my attention to Ghosts of War. I was blown away by his writing. I would strongly recommend Ghosts of War as required reading for high school history classes, to see what the Iraq and Afghanistan wars felt like to recent soldiers, in their age group. Later, when my own son joined the Army as a Cavalry Scout, and served in Afghanistan, I had a whole new appreciation for Ryan's book, and how he wrote so accurately, for those of us 'back home', what it was like to be a young soldier in a modern war.When I found out Ryan was writing a fiction book, about an Army guy (a Cav Scout like my son!) I couldnt wait to read it. It did not disappoint. Books like 10 Klicks are what those of us who are busy living our lives in a safe country that we rarely think of the realities of war, need. It's the story of a young soldier who ended up on foreign soil, in an Army uniform, for reasons not as patriotic as most. It traces his journey through boot camp, and deployment, letting us get to know the men (and woman) he serves with. He tells their stories along with his own. Just as the story is trotting along, a life altering event happens to the soldiers, and we get to see how they all react in the weeks afterward. By that point in the book you've come to care about the characters, and their outcomes matter. This book would also be great required reading for any high schooler, or adult. It's a great, ACCURATE, depiction of what is happening halfway across the world, on foreign sand, to men and women wearing our US uniforms.I highly recommend it. It's especially helpful for parents of soldiers who have or are going to be deployed. It gives us a peek into the world our kids' experience, without the immediate personal connection we might get from the stories we are lucky enough to dig out of our own soldier.

Where do I begin? This is brilliant. As I lived through Charlie Main's time in and around 10 Klicks, I was enthralled. When I occasionally tore myself away, returning to real life, I always wondered about the inspiration for these characters. In the real world, who is Carrie? Who is Shields? Are these completely out of Ryan Smithson's head? In the end, I decided I didn't care. Not to dismiss the plot, because it is interesting, but this book is, as many of my favorites are, very character-driven. Right from the outset, this is established. This is completely organic and you find yourself right there with them. You know them. You feel with them and need to know what happens to them next.Now, I purposely didn't start here, but I think it is worth mentioning: I didn't expect this. I loved Ghosts of War. That was nonfiction. I don't know many (any?) authors that can transition from nonfiction to fiction, effectively or otherwise.To anyone considering this book, it is totally worth the investment.To the author, Charlie Mike!

We say 'thank you for your service', but do we know what their service actually looks like? Ryan's book gives us a peek into one version.More info in the review section of the Kindle version.

Ryan Smithson's fabulous memoir GHOSTS IF WAR showed us what a powerful storyteller he could be. But memoirs, being non-fiction trap a writer by facts. Smithson shows his remarkable talent as a novelist here in his first novel. This story rings so true and touches the heart while stimulating our understanding of the world and ourselves. A BRILLIANT debut.

An amazing book by a hometown author. The book just flowed and I felt like I knew the characters. The characters were believable, each with its own flaws. The end of the book left me wanting more. Hoping that Ryan will do a sequel!

So good ,even my teenage son picked it up and started reading ! 😊

Jonathan Wilson is probably one of the best scholars of the game. This book is a comprehensive, time-spanning, and thorough look at Argentinian soccer. It doesn't seem to miss anything, and covers all of the most important aspects of the country's footballing history.However, the book lacks a bit of romance - Wilson tries often to tie the political scene of Argentina (often a contentious one) as it relates to football. While the two are undoubtedly intertwined, it never really feels believable in this book. It feels more like parallel events that overlap slightly, but it doesn't really capture the wholly intertwined aspect of football and politics, revolution, geopolitical events, etc. It feels a bit forced.Along the same lines, it often starts to read more like an encyclopedia or anthology vs. a story or historical literature. Many times I found myself zoning out because the book was just describing a relatively mundane match that didn't feel all that important in the long run of Argentina's football history.A great novel for those who wish to increase their knowledge of Argentinian footballing history, but not for those who are looking for a bit more flair or excitement.

I used to be a frequent reader of Jonathan Wilson's columns on Guardian and ESPN FC. I know how good as a writer he is. Plus, his Inverting the Pyramid is one of the most mentioned books among football tactic enthusiasts. But with Angles with Dirty Faces, this was the first time I read one of his books, and it took no time to show why he is one of the best storytellers in football journalism. He digs into the past of Argentinian football and puts it in the context of the turbulent history of this nation. The book records the history that spans over a century and features hundreds of characters. There is so much information to put in. It really takes a skillful storyteller to keep track of all this, make sense of it, and make it interesting. He was able to do that, brilliantly. Highly recommended.

It is impressive not only the knowledge, but the level the accuracy and understanding of local issues that Mr. Wilson shows.The book is able to unveil some information even to an old Argentine man, very fond of foot-ball, which is my case. It is a nice and funny experience to read some very local facts by the guy that writes at The Guardian!, with full accuracy ..., as if it were written in Spanish by a local journalist. Despite the huge barrier that a different culture and language is supposed to represent to grasp some facts, the book incredibly maintains the local flavor. Wilson also has a good understanding of Buenos Aires "lunfardo" (slang), and gets the deep meaning of some expresssions, which clearly helped him to write such an outstanding work.

This is a well told story that covers the history of Argentinian soccer both within - the Argentina league - and without - in international competitions - the country. It also integrates the broader story of Argentina such as the dictatorship's attempt to use the 1978 world cup to enhance Argentina's reputation on the international stage. Though the book is not extremely technical, those without at least an intermediate level understanding of soccer tactics may wish to have Wilson's other book, Inverting the Pyramid, on hand to provide some background on the evolution of soccer more broadly. Overall, well worth the effort, even for those whose love of soccer is based largely on the European game.

Jonathan Wilson has done a magnificent job with this book. He has able to capture every nuance of modern Argentine soccer and explain who, what, why, where, and how it come to be part of today's football. As an Argentina deeply in love with this sport, I would highly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in the sport or the politics of the region. Thank you Jonathan for one my of my new favorite books!

Entertaining but not as good as his previous books. The chapters lack continuity and maybe could have been tied together a little bit more neatly.

Love how Wilson ties the history and turmoil in Argentina to the success and fortunes of the league clubs, players abroad, and national team. All the information interacting can get a bit confusing when putting the timeline together, but it's one of the more interesting reads for me in awhile.

Having been a gardener for over 30 years, I am still impressed with the tips which Tracy has shared in this book. I grow mainly perennials and almost all of them are covered in her book. This book goes in-depth into each species and also gives recommendations for which cultivars do best. I highly recommend this book.

I bought this for my husband. He says it exceeded his expectations and it's the best book he's bought in years. He loves that the author SHOWS the reader examples of how to do various things with the garden, and doesn't just tell the reader. There are lots of photos showing examples of how to do things & what will happen if you don't. He loves it! We have a large yard with many large gardens and he says this book is like a bible for maintaining them and creating new ones.

This is by far the best book about growing and taking care of perennials.I saw a recommendation in an English gardening book and decided to buy it. I have alot of books but this is the best. It includes info on pruning (cutting back)plants and when. Though we live in very different zones it is easy to translate hers to mine. (Ohio to Ca.) .I highly recommend this book.

Death Metal musician and author Ekeroth (Violent Italy) shows a true fan's dedication in this oral history/band index of the thunderous music scene that emerged from frozen, sparsely-populated Sweden in the '80s and early '90s. In his introduction, Ekeroth explains the youth phenomenon that was Swedish Death Metal (it sounds pretty much like you would think) as natural in a country "generally made up of extremely small and boring towns." He writes: "In the small and worthless town of Avesta where I grew up, there were metal bands in every garage, school, and youth center," he writes. Without sensationalizing SDM's dark, flamboyant lyrics, Ekeroth traces the movement that produced more than a thousand bands, from proto-genre "thrash metal" (more punk) to bastard offshoots like "black metal" (more makeup, less fun), through interviews with the musicians, tape-traders and fanzine writers who were there. The furious scene, made up almost entirely of frustrated and disaffected teenagers, would echo the '70s punk revolution in New York and explode with the same powder-keg intensity, before eventually spawning "ridiculously well established" years that meant the death of Death. Daniel Ekeroth gives an amazingly detailed account of the birth and rise of one the most revered genres of metal music. It focuses on the seeds of the extreme movement and how it developed into the massive Sunlight sound and beyond.It basically leaves no stones unturned on the origins of these Swedish bands. the book includes first hand accounts from many people in those bands and people involved with zines, radioshows ectThis book is truly hard to put down.If you are looking for info about In Flames, Dark Tranquillity or other Gothenburg bands do not look here.The closest you will get is some info from Michael Amott from Arch Enemy but if you didn't know he was apart of the seminal band Carnage.Get it now!

Excellent work dedicated to the Swedish scene. Lots of great information and interviews, et cetera. It isn’t flawless with some mistakes here and there, but where else are you going to get such an extreme write up on the Swedish movement? It’s a little overpriced in my opinion, but well worth the purchase.

Arrived in great condition

Like any book on music there are a lot of parts in the book that are subjective. That being said this is the most in-depth, interesting, and well researched book not just on metal but on any topic I've read concerning music.The pictures and articles Ekeroth managed to scrape together for this amazing tome compliment the writing and history very well, and being that this is the most money I've spent for a book in a long time, it was worth every penny.A star gets deducted because, even though it is clarified in the introduction that there a lots of parts that are subjective, there are areas where the author comes off "metal-er than thou." This is especially the case in the index of metal bands where bands that actually made money and became famous (see In Flames) are called "too commercial." Shouldn't the listener/reader be the judge of that? And maybe they are too commercial in Scandinavia, but last I checked an In Flames album would not stand a chance to crack the Top 40 in the American market, which IS way overproduced and manufactured.That aside it has to be one of the best things I've read in a long time and I'm hoping someone comes along and puts out a book about Children of Bodom and the Finnish metal scene sometime in the near future (preferably in the King's English and not Finnish).

This is remarkably well written and goes into detail about the music itself instead of just the people and places involved in its creation. There are lots of great photos, too. If you love metal, this should be on your book shelf or coffee table! :) Sarah

With it's diligent research, copious rare graphics, enthusiastic delivery and quality printing, this just may be the best book ever written on any aspect of heavy metal. It goes to show just how well the music can be documented when you have an author that really gives a damn! The author deserves our gratitude and praise for the amount of work and love put into this book, which is staggering in it's exhaustive nature.

I buy a lot of these types of bass books, and I like this author's books. This one is good; it's a nice review and tribute to the major bass players within the R&B genre during its heyday. It provides some basic background information about each bassist., and a few measures of signature sample grooves. I like that it has some suggested tracks to listen to for each bassist. The author has done this with some of his other books, and I appreciate it. It helps me build a music library based on bass players and genres. There isn't a lot to engage you and your bass in this book, so it's different from the usual bass work books, which isn't a bad thing. As a book about bass players, styles, and the genre. it is worth the purchase. However, as a bass workbook, maybe not so much. However, I'm glad it's in my library.

Exactly what it purports to be - insight into the styles, "sound" and "signature" techniques of some exceptional R&B bassists. As others have stated, the book is not song-length transcriptions, but rather teaching "nuggets", which includes specific discography suggestions.I strongly recommend listing to the author's recommended cuts prior to attempting to absorb the bassist's dedicated chapter. For me that discography review gave increased contextual understanding of each bass player's approach. Thanks to the wonders of the internet, and Amazon's streaming audio, many of the recommended cuts are just a few mouse clicks away

First, my background: I am a performer (bass trombone and electric bass) and an instructor. I am also a composer and arranger. My undergraduate degree is in Music Education (Masters in Music Composition); and the majority of my Air Force career was spent in the field of Education and Training.I "collect" bass guitar method books, always searching for that "perfect" book for the beginning, intermediate, or advanced bassist. "The R&B Bass Masters: The Way They Play" is written by Ed Friedland who, once again demonstrates that he is truly a master at authoring bass method books that are well-organized and easy to understand, yet extremely comprehensive and informative. (I dare say that, if Ed Friedland is the author, then the book is worth purchasing without any further research required!)Aside from the obligatory introduction, author's biography, acknowledgments and CD track list, "R&B Masters" is divided into 10 chapters, each featuring a different R&B bass legend. Each chapter contains a brief biography of the featured bassist as well as sections on his gear and setup, style and technique, and a lesson with examples from his repertoire (included on the accompanying CD). The lesson examples are explained and analyzed; and written in both standard music notation and tablature. I firmly believe that every bassist (i.e., "musician") should develop as least a rudimentary ability to read music and not rely on tablature. However, this is the precise circumstance where tablature is an invaluable tool to gaining insight as to "how" the R&B master played a particular bass line. What makes this book so great is that the drum part is also included with the music notation and tablature.In addition (and this is the "icing on the cake"), each chapter includes a selected discography (with recommended "cuts") and a detailed "checklist" which covers each bassist's equipment (type of bass, fingerboard, condition [stock or custom], setup, strings, pickups, and amp), as well as the bassist's tone, attack, signature traits, influences and overall approach.As an example of how this all fits together, the chapter on Ronnie Baker (one of Philadelphia's top session bassists in the late '60s-mid '70s) states that he used an Ampeg B-15 amp (as a monitor in the studio; but a direct box fed his sound to the mixing board) and a stock, pre-CBS Fender Precision bass with stock Fender Precision split-coil pickups, a rosewood fingerboard, and heavy-gauge flatwound strings (that had "possibly" been marinated in butter!). It goes on to state that his tone was dark with a very dead sound (strings muted at the bridge with masking tape or paper towels) with a very punchy, yet rounded sound. He kept solid time, and his bass lines were unassuming with occasional bursts of flair. He was influenced by Duck Dunn and James Jamerson, and his overall approach to playing the bass was with melodic, laid-back grooves with a behind-the-beat feel. Further insight into Baker's style and technique is provided by comments from his session-soulmate, drummer Earl Young, who states that Baker made sure he knew what was going on by watching the drummer and his kick-drum pedal. "Baker would watch my feet, explained Young. "He sat on my left side and he'd copy whatever my foot was doing."All in all, a "must have" book for anyone interested in a bassist's perspective of R&B: both its history and bass playing style.

It's written by Ed Friedland, what more do I need to say, really? He is the master of bass instruction books, and this is one of his better books. While it doesn't give you as much theory or charting as most of his other books, it does give you a decent glimpse into the careers and lives of some of the greatest bass players who ever lived, and explains how they got their signature sounds, making it easier to emulate their style when covering their tunes.

I've had this book for about ten days now and am very happy with it. The biographical backgrounds on the players is enjoyable to read and it's interesting to see what gear these guys were using -- this information really rounds out this book in a way that makes it stand out from other books I've used.The recording that comes with the book is also very good. The bass is very loud and the author does a good job of nailing each bassist's tone and feel. Also, the rhythms stand up, too, which is key. What's cool is that the bass is in one speaker and the drums are in the other so, if you want, you can turn the balance on your stereo and play with the drums alone, without the bass track getting in your way.I think some people are turned off by this book because the entire bass line for each song isn't written out. Personally, I prefer it this way. I just want to get a taste for what these particular players were doing and don't feel like learning entire songs.
