Both were New York Times Bestsellers and both earned the Casey Award as Best Baseball Book of its respective year. A former senior writer and assistant managing editor at Sports Illustrated, he is now an editorial director at Time Inc. As an on-air commentator Kennedy contributes regularly to the MLB Network, MSNBC and other news outlets. He teaches at New York University's Tisch Institute for Sports Management, Media, and Business and has taught journalism at NYU and Columbia University. The sport of football has been under the microscope for several months due to issues on many fronts: domestic violence incidents involving professional players, the overall culture of the game and the safety of the players’ long-term health due to the concerns about the number of concussions suffered. All of those topics and more are explored in this excellent book on a high school football team by Kostya Kennedy.The book takes the reader through the 2014 football season of New Rochelle High School, a New York City suburban school district. The area is a melting pot of all levels of affluence, of various races and various family dynamics. The football program, led by coach Lou DiRienzo, is one of the more successful teams for many years. The players are proud to be wearing the Huguenots jersey and many come back to visit.One of these former players, Ray Rice, came back to visit during that 2014 season when he was the flashpoint of the issue of domestic violence in professional football. This section of the book was a good example of the main characteristic of this book that I thought made it an excellent read: it was fair, free of inflammatory talking points and explained the issue in a thorough manner.Concerns about player safety and concussions are also explored from the point of view of coaches, players and parents. The culture of the game will make players not want to suggest that anything is wrong with them physically. There is concussion treatment protocol that all teams must follow, but it relies on player self-reporting, Because of this, according to a quote in the book, “There may be as many concussions that go unrecognized as go recognized on the football field.” But as to WHY this is the case – the culture of the game – is explained quite well through the book.Kennedy does address the question most often posed to parents – would he let his son play football? By following the season of a successful high school football team, he explains his position in a manner that will make any person think about his or her perspective of the sport. This is done not only in the last chapter when he addresses the question directly, but in each previous chapter when Kennedy captures the spirit, the drive and the passion these young men have for the game of football and the school. The New Rochelle Huguenots are continually a force in Section One Football. The coaching staff is extremely dedicated to the team and largely due to the leadership of Coach DeRienzo. Lasting Impact tells the tale of this special dynamicis in an up close and personal way. Even for those fans if the team like myself, the book sheds new light on the hard work and dedication of the coaches and the players that forms a unique bond and shapes the future of these young men. A fun and enlightning read!

It is a very exciting book. I feel that the author really connects with the players and parents of of the players. He tugged at the emotions of the players, and got them to open up about their experiences at playing such a grinding sport. The parents offered a lot of insight and experience and concerns regarding the sport. I purchased the book and finished it within a week. My husband and my son also enjoyed the book, I would recommend for all football players and parents to read this book.

Have you ever read a book that excited, and consumed you so much that once you finally closed the book and gave into sleep, its the first thing you pick up again the next morning?Beyond Words had hooked me on the first page!Not your typical romance, and something unique from Abby Brooks. A pouring of hearts, minds, and souls in a three-dimensional triangle of friendship, lust, and love. The characters connection can easily be felt- their struggles quickly became mine.While there was plenty of emotional upsets,( I even had a few sniffles in there) the lightheartedness was also in ample supply, between Cat's inner dialogue, and her exuberant friends, plus the many layers of the Hutton family, there's plenty to smile about! Add in that sexual tension lingering underneath the surface.. woo --You've got a magnificent story that begs to be read!I am excited to see where this story goes from here- The Hutton Family has quickly become people I need to know everything about!#OneClickMaterial

I'm not going to start this by saying, "I never write reviews'. Well I guess I just did anyway. I write them only when something either REALLY impresses me or REALLY makes me gag. This one impressed me. I doubt many will read my review because if you are like me, you don't care about the 4 and 5 star reviews. You want the dirt. You want the grit. You want to know how bad it really is. Cynical...perhaps, but I have been duped into buying books with lots of 4 and 5 star reviews and they were TERRIBLE. This one was an absolute breath of fresh air. Lets explore that, shall we?First of all, the writing is excellent. I only noticed one obvious typo. That alone gives it a 3 star rating. I didn't have to continually be pulled out of the story because of glaring grammatical mistakes, poor word usage or a plethora of ill placed commas. Next, the story is sweet and believable. You LIKE the characters and you are rooting for them. The female is strong without being a curse word laden bee-otch. SOOOOO refreshing. She is genuine and nice. I would actually love to be Cat's friend. Her outlook on life is lightness and good. Not to say she doesn't have struggles, she does.....oh does she ever, but she doesn't have a "woe is me. I'm so pitiful" world view. YAY!!! Lucas is hurting and struggling with his demons but he isn't so broken that he is some sicko perv or all around a-hole. He is thoughtful and introspective and cares about his family and about Cat. Likable characters; that bumped it up to 4 stars.The half a star deduction comes from the climax....or sort of lacking of a climax. I ain't no spoil sport so I won't give anything away but when truths come out and all is revealed, it was too quick. I even said those words out loud. I might have even yelled them. The writing was so excellent and the story so well thought out, I had hoped for a bit more from Ms Brooks on that score but PLEASE don't let my opinion spoil anything for you. This is worth every penny and worth the afternoon it took to read it. I am eagerly awaiting Wyatt's story now.Oh, and I didn't realize this until I started to clean up my kindle and organize my collections/authors, but I have a few Abby Brooks books waiting in the queue already. Guess it is time to dust them off and finally read them because this was a joy.

Abby Brooks writes books that draw readers right into the story. When you read about her characters, you want them to be your friends.The characters meet first thru soul bearing emails as Katydid and Skywalker. Then later in person as Cat and Lucas, lost souls searching. When they eventually discover they 'know' each other it is explosive. Love their story and their happily ever after "Life is movement, sometimes fluid and graceful, sometimes harsh and jolting..." ( quote from book)

Beyond Words is book 1 in the new Hutton Family series by Abby Brooks and OMG..what a way to begin this Series!!!Lucas (Skywalker) and Cat (Katydid) first connect when Katydid loses her journal with all her inner most thoughts at a coffee shop only to be found by Skywalker who reads it and leaves her a message to contact him. She contacts him which start a romance..then Lucas and Cat meets when she starts a job at the Hut. Unbeknownst to either they already know each other from the emails..so the story goes...This story brings them full circle and has lots to keep you reading until the last page. Looking forward to reading more Hutton’s!!!

I was really looking forward to reading this book, but I found myself struggling after the first few chapters. I found it hard to believe that Lucas didn't connect the dots to Cat's story. I found their loyalty to each other as strangers very unrealistic. For me personally, I dislike coincidences in books, like the one in this book, which is why I possibly did not enjoy this book like so many others did. So, please read the high star reviews when making your decision to read this book. I gave it 3 stars for the idea of the story, and the editing.

I loved everything about this book! The way this story was written just made my heart sing. I love how Lucas and Cat first meet via emails and just continue to fall for each other by pouring out their hearts and thoughts to each other. It was also beautiful to see them fall for each other in person, without knowing they were already talking via emails. When Lucas finally realized that Cat was his secret email love, I shed a few tears over it. This story was so wonderfully written that you just won’t be able to put it down.

I am in love. Beyond Words was beyond everything. I laughed (the line about a certain sneeze had me dying 😆) Then my heart was in my chest thumping away. I read and read with baited breath not able to stop until I had the answers that allowed me to release my breath. Perfect release timing around Valentines Day because this is such a romantic story it just fits the season. But it's more than romance. It's sexy, has heartaches, poetic words, depth and so many emotions. Cat & Lucas are amazing characters. I'm very excited for the Hutton series.

Better written than many series biographies, the book will capture the attention of Deadheads as well as young people more casually interested in rock. Piccoli's focus is often Jerry Garcia, but he also introduces the other band members and vividly describes life in San Francisco at the time the band was being formed. Piccoli doesn't pull any punches about the band's drug use; in fact, one of the most interesting parts of the book is Piccoli's discussion of the evolution of LSD, first used in experiments by the U.S. military (which is where author Ken Kesey first got the drug). He also makes it clear that Garcia's early death was a cumulative result of years of drug use. Various (if innocuous) antidrug messages by other band members are worked into the text. The black-and-white photos are unfailingly interesting, but the best part of the art is the reproductions of Stanley Mouse's skull-and-roses designs that are synonymous with the Dead. This book is a must-read for every Scrum Master! I've just finished reading it for the third time and although I consider myself quite experienced, I've gathered a large amount of new insights. The three levels of the Scrum Master are a useful perspective to take into account. It clearly shows the richness and potential of the Scrum Master role. The book contains clear examples, practices, and lot's of exercises you can try immediately. If you're interested in this position, this book is definitely worth reading.

We have loved the Babylit series of books and own quite a few. This is probably my least favorite of the series. The illustrations are still lovely (and very different from the Disney version and the book's original illustrations, which, as someone who also collections Alie in Wonderland stuff, did delight me), as they are with the entire series. They pair the pictures with a single color, so it is truly a colors primer. It doesn't follow the story at all, which I also don't mind, but which some readers may not like.The issue I have with the book is that they show only a single illustration with the single word (a color). However, there will be multiple colors in the picture and it is not always clear which color is suppose to be the dominate color. Additionally, on a few of the pages the choice of text color and background color make it hard to read.

This is a very adorable way to teach colors! I don’t understand all of the negative reviewers that were apparently expecting this tiny board book that is called a “color primer” to include the story. I knew that this was specifically for the purpose of teaching of colors & enjoyed the illustrations & nod to the original literature. The reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5, is the orange cat is hard to see on the warm pink background & the blue caterpillar is very teal.

Im a fan of many of the books in this series, but some feel a bit forced, and this one misses the mark with me. It says its a color primer, but many of the colors it labels are not obvious for a small child. Also, some of the colors are not contrasting enough and are difficult to make out, like having an orange cat on a pink background.Not well thought out or executed in my opinion, if you want an introduction to this series, I would buy one of the other books instead.

This has been perfect for my girls, from ages 12mo-18mo, and I imagine they'll continue to enjoy it in the months to come. While this may not be complex enough for a 3yr old, it is perfect for the 1-2 age range. It teaches colors, and for parents with a little creativity, you can take the learning a step further by pointing out other things on the pages. The thick pages make it easier for a toddler to turn them & not damage them.

My 11 month old daughter is obsessed with the Pride & Prejudice Baby Lit book... she pulls it out at least twice a day. I ordered Alice in Wonderland hoping for the same magic, but I agree with the poster who said the illustrations are great, but there's not enough content.The first time I read it to my daughter, I followed the text and she was bored. The second time, I skipped the text and just gave her a baby version of the story (e.g. "A magical white rabbit appeared... Alice followed him down a hole in her black shoes... inside, she saw three bottles..., etc.")... that held her attention much better. So if you remember and narrate the story of Alice in Wonderland, this is a fun book. But it's not quite as much fun if you just want to stick to what's written.

Baby lit books are our all time favorite books! They are small books, but that does not underestimate the goodness inside. We have ordered just about all of the baby lit books and love to swap them out during seasons and holidays. I also love that they have different primers and different types of learning for your little one. These books are great gift ideas, there are a lot of genres to choose from. The artwork and colors are bright and vivid, very pleasant to look at. The mommy and the teacher in me loves and approves these books!

All the books in this series are wonderful. My daughter enjoys them thoroughly, they are some of her favorite. This one in particular is one that is simple enough that she has it memorized. She LOVES that she can "read" it herself. She is so proud afterwards. Just a cute book that we both enjoy reading.

I have several other BabyLit books and my almost 1-yr old daughter loves them! The story is very very simplified, but the pictures are bright and fun and eye-catching and she loves turning the pages! Love that they also teach - counting, colors, shapes, etc! These will go in storage when outgrown to be passed on!

Great overview of a thought-provoking, underrated auteur. I've been fascinated with Linklater's career since his amazing debut, "Slacker," and with few exceptions, he's been consistently able to deliver.

A little academic and sterile, but enjoyable for a Linklater fan. A shame it was completed before Boyhood.
