Piccoli begins with a pivotal event in the singer's childhood?losing half of his finger in an accident. The band's story is put into the context of the whole San Francisco hippie milieu and the Haight-Ashbury scene of the early '60s, a background that is important in understanding the group's roots and eventual impact. The later history of the band is also presented, including the rise of the fanatical fans known as Deadheads and the Dead concert experience that became a kind of traveling caravan show. The book covers events through Garcia's death, but does not include the group's decision to disband. Better written than many series biographies, the book will capture the attention of Deadheads as well as young people more casually interested in rock. Piccoli's focus is often Jerry Garcia, but he also introduces the other band members and vividly describes life in San Francisco at the time the band was being formed. Piccoli doesn't pull any punches about the band's drug use; in fact, one of the most interesting parts of the book is Piccoli's discussion of the evolution of LSD, first used in experiments by the U.S. military (which is where author Ken Kesey first got the drug). He also makes it clear that Garcia's early death was a cumulative result of years of drug use. Various (if innocuous) antidrug messages by other band members are worked into the text. The black-and-white photos are unfailingly interesting, but the best part of the art is the reproductions of Stanley Mouse's skull-and-roses designs that are synonymous with the Dead. This book is a must-read for every Scrum Master! I've just finished reading it for the third time and although I consider myself quite experienced, I've gathered a large amount of new insights. The three levels of the Scrum Master are a useful perspective to take into account. It clearly shows the richness and potential of the Scrum Master role. The book contains clear examples, practices, and lot's of exercises you can try immediately. If you're interested in this position, this book is definitely worth reading.

I'm an Agile coach and I found this book to be particularly helpful to me in building our training for the teams that I work with. I recommend reading this book if you are a new or even an experienced ScrumMaster. I often use the section on self-organizing teams to help me explain those concepts to students in my coursework.

We have loved the Babylit series of books and own quite a few. This is probably my least favorite of the series. The illustrations are still lovely (and very different from the Disney version and the book's original illustrations, which, as someone who also collections Alie in Wonderland stuff, did delight me), as they are with the entire series. They pair the pictures with a single color, so it is truly a colors primer. It doesn't follow the story at all, which I also don't mind, but which some readers may not like.The issue I have with the book is that they show only a single illustration with the single word (a color). However, there will be multiple colors in the picture and it is not always clear which color is suppose to be the dominate color. Additionally, on a few of the pages the choice of text color and background color make it hard to read.

This is a very adorable way to teach colors! I don’t understand all of the negative reviewers that were apparently expecting this tiny board book that is called a “color primer” to include the story. I knew that this was specifically for the purpose of teaching of colors & enjoyed the illustrations & nod to the original literature. The reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5, is the orange cat is hard to see on the warm pink background & the blue caterpillar is very teal.

Im a fan of many of the books in this series, but some feel a bit forced, and this one misses the mark with me. It says its a color primer, but many of the colors it labels are not obvious for a small child. Also, some of the colors are not contrasting enough and are difficult to make out, like having an orange cat on a pink background.Not well thought out or executed in my opinion, if you want an introduction to this series, I would buy one of the other books instead.

This has been perfect for my girls, from ages 12mo-18mo, and I imagine they'll continue to enjoy it in the months to come. While this may not be complex enough for a 3yr old, it is perfect for the 1-2 age range. It teaches colors, and for parents with a little creativity, you can take the learning a step further by pointing out other things on the pages. The thick pages make it easier for a toddler to turn them & not damage them.

My 11 month old daughter is obsessed with the Pride & Prejudice Baby Lit book... she pulls it out at least twice a day. I ordered Alice in Wonderland hoping for the same magic, but I agree with the poster who said the illustrations are great, but there's not enough content.The first time I read it to my daughter, I followed the text and she was bored. The second time, I skipped the text and just gave her a baby version of the story (e.g. "A magical white rabbit appeared... Alice followed him down a hole in her black shoes... inside, she saw three bottles..., etc.")... that held her attention much better. So if you remember and narrate the story of Alice in Wonderland, this is a fun book. But it's not quite as much fun if you just want to stick to what's written.

Baby lit books are our all time favorite books! They are small books, but that does not underestimate the goodness inside. We have ordered just about all of the baby lit books and love to swap them out during seasons and holidays. I also love that they have different primers and different types of learning for your little one. These books are great gift ideas, there are a lot of genres to choose from. The artwork and colors are bright and vivid, very pleasant to look at. The mommy and the teacher in me loves and approves these books!

All the books in this series are wonderful. My daughter enjoys them thoroughly, they are some of her favorite. This one in particular is one that is simple enough that she has it memorized. She LOVES that she can "read" it herself. She is so proud afterwards. Just a cute book that we both enjoy reading.

I have several other BabyLit books and my almost 1-yr old daughter loves them! The story is very very simplified, but the pictures are bright and fun and eye-catching and she loves turning the pages! Love that they also teach - counting, colors, shapes, etc! These will go in storage when outgrown to be passed on!

Great overview of a thought-provoking, underrated auteur. I've been fascinated with Linklater's career since his amazing debut, "Slacker," and with few exceptions, he's been consistently able to deliver.

A little academic and sterile, but enjoyable for a Linklater fan. A shame it was completed before Boyhood.

Scientology's ham-handed plots to follow, second guess, pester, provoke and hamper Sweeney's efforts remind me of the Three Stooges with Miscavige as Moe. The Scientology-hired PIs play the Keystone Cops.Sweeney includes transcripts of the Scientology interviews that Panorama was forbidden to show. The "fine women" were prompted to robotically recite the party lines. Their over-the-top praise for David Miscavige is comical.This book helps fit the puzzle pieces together of who is who in the ex-Scientologist and what they endured. Now I know who it was that Sweeney interviewed on the parking lot roof. Tommy Davis appeared and attempted to "dead agent" the man. This proved that they were being followed, that Fair Game is indeed a cult policy and that Scientology is barking mad.This is an indispensable book for Scientology watchers. It filled in many gaps and put a lot of pieces together in this insane Wonderland that is the cult of Scientology.Scientology is still using the exact same playbook as seen in Sweeney's book. They have no learning curve.

Having grown up in Scientology, and having left only three years ago, I've been sorting out what was true and what wasn't true. This book really helped me to understand why the Church of Scientology is in fact a cult. After reading it over two days, my views on the cult became so much more clear. They truly are The Church of Fear! They no longer have any control over me or my family. I'm sadden to think of the few who remain and the hell their lives must be. It takes a lot of energy to pretend everything is just perfect and great, when it isn't. That is the way most Scientologist live, singing the praises of the cult, while living in despair, and financial ruin. The best part about this book was that the author had the text messages of the cult members who were stalking him! It really shows you the level of crazy, and how out of touch with the real world the cult members are. I've seen it myself, and am happy to not be living that way anymore.

Having been part of this cult 35 years ago, I would have thought I had enough distance it would be like reading a history book. Not so.A combination of humor and intensity, Sweeney's book puts you right there in the moment. I woke up with screaming nightmares while reading this book. A must read for anyone who,has ever been a member of, or anyone who ever considers going near this cult.

I wouldn't have trusted this book had Sweeney not been forthcoming with his obvious -- and understandable -- bias. Bias aside, he does a good job of presenting both sides. As a fellow journalist, I can't help but be a bit critical of the reporting he describes because he sounds overly antagonistic from the get-go, which surely gave the church too much to work with in its counter-campaign. That said, Sweeney is an accomplished journalist and I might have fared a million times worse, so while I, in hindsight, can see some flaws in the approach, I don't pretend that I necessarily wouldn't have made the same mistakes -- and far sooner. I'm glad Sweeney wrote this. It was a fascinating read.

I will be honest - I've not yet finished this book - but of the 6 books I've read about Scientology, it is by far my favourite.Since I am not a Scientologist, I do not agree with it being classified a religion, and, to be blunt, think most of it is just nuts - it is nice to read an author with whom I can shake my head and roll my eyes. He makes it quite apparent that he is in no way a fan of the "church".He is no saint, he also makes that clear, but I am not sure my halo would stay in place if I had to deal with some of the stuff he has endured dealing with this group.Of the books I've read, it is one of the least insightful in terms of learning about the "religion" itself, but it is the most enjoyable!

If you watched John Sweeney's Scientology exposes on Panorama (BBC), you know exactly what to expect in this book. CoS is as crazy as ever, but John rarely treads into any new territory. But, he does expand on the behind the scenes during the production these programs.The stories are intriguing.For example, John expands on his interviews with various adherents of Scientology. These are in this exposes in a fleeting couple of moments (since Scientology threatened legal action if any significant footage was used), but John's full story of how excruciatingly awkward it was for him to get accosted by the likes of Kristie Alley and Anne Archer is compelling.Definitely an entertaining read, and also helps expose the ills of Scientology. Recommended.

John Sweeney provides a well documented story behind the scenes of the BBC Panorama investigation into Scientology. it includes updates as recent as Fall 2012 with the revelation that Tommy Davis blew. In the book, Sweeney is able to flesh out the stories portrayed in the 2007 and 2010 documentaries. It's an engaging story and like most involving Co$, one that will leave you shaking your head in disbelief. Sweeney's style is informal. He can tell a story, weaving detail and humor into an engaging narrative. Highly recommended.One minor gripe - the kindle version contains quite a few typos, so obviously was not edited prior to being posted as a kindle version. Did not detract from the substance and the book was inexpensive.

The more I read about Scientology the more I wonder about people, and why we are as f'd up as to stay in such f'd up circumstances. Excuse the cursing here, but some situations like Scientology deserve that level of emphasis.This book was very enjoyable. Yes, lots of typos and grammar errors, but I laughed my ass off much of the time and screamed in frustration into the living room air, wondering why the church is still around.Get passed the spelling errors and stuff, and you'll finish the book more informed, entertained, and downright pissed off that no one has yet booted Miscavige. I hope this doesn't get me Fair-Gamed.

In 1962 he published African Independence: the exploding emergence of the new African nations, a mass-market paperback that sold tens of thousands of copies.
