I often don't know what the heck cook books are telling me to do. I was looking for healthy and affordable recipes that I could actually follow and would have good and interesting flavor, preferably Asian, so I bought this book. My husband is Chinese and his parents are fabulous Chinese cooks. I am not Chinese and I am not a fabulous cook. This recipe book has worked for us and I feel more capable as a cook every time I use it. I've had it for about 10 days and I've made 5 recipes from it. I'm really pretty novice in the kitchen, but Ming Tsai's simple instructions work for me.What I really like that is unique about this book:1. It is organized in a useful and intelligent way in chapters based on cooking style rather than meat or dish type. I love that. When I need a quick dish, I look in the wok or high temp section. When I have some time, braise or roast. As I type this, my first EVER braise is cooking away. I'm excited. I've never found a recipe I trusted enough to try braising. I've never BOUGHT short ribs before. The "aromatic short ribs with root vegetables" that is boiling away smells so good. It doesn't smell like my kitchen -- in the past.2. My favorite chapter so far is the Toss chapter. From this chapter, I've made the sesame chicken cucumber noodle salad, spicy shrimp and avocado salad, and the tofu green goddess salad. These dishes could easily be main courses for many people. I make them as appetizers or lunches for my DH.3. EVERY recipe has a picture that actually is what you can make. The pictures really help me because, although I don't have the plating gene, with the picture as a guide, I can make these recipes LOOK pretty nice too. It's not like Bon Appetit recipes that I make that NEVER look like the picture. Ming's recipes and pictures actually go together.One caveat:I do STRONGLY recommend this cookbook with this one reservation: since it is asian fusion, it does require a few (common) asian spices, sauces, and condiments, so I'm not sure this is a good recipe book for someone who lives in an area that lacks Asian markets or Asian sections in markets. However, if you have access to an asian market, even if going into one is totally foreign to you, his descriptions help tremendously and you'll be able to find what you need.

We became fans of Ming while watching him on PBS. He makes really tasty dishes that are healthy, not because they replace unhealthy items with the low-fat version, but because the real recipe starts out healthy and pure. His recipes are great because they appeal to people with high-brow tastes while being easy to make (as opposed to say, some fussy French recipe). His recipes have a wide appeal, I would serve these to my pickiest relatives as well as the down to earth ones.The book is beautifully put together. The recipes all have full-page photographs of the meal. What I love is that he recommends a wine/beer to go with every dish. You'll be able to achieve the right pairing the first time you make the meal, without having to taste it first. I am no chef, but I do love to cook; I find myself having all of the tools necessary to make the meal, the only issue I have is finding the ingredients. Granted, I live in a suburban area of a boring city, but even if I moved back to a major city, I wouldn't know off the top of my head where to get oxtail. The harder to find ingredients don't make me like this book less, because I feel it rounds out my recipe collection, but I was surprised that the meals in this book contained more hard-to-find ingredients than his show does. That is the only reason for four stars. I will likely look for others of his cook books to try to find more of his recipes that contain ingredients I am familiar with cooking. In addition to the drink pairing tips, Ming provides lengthy descriptions of the meals, so that you can imagine what you are about to make and know how to aim for that end. He gives tips at the bottom of the page about, for example, handling various meats or cutting a certain vegetable.Examples of some of the recipes are:- Star anise-ginger "braised" whole chicken- Red-roast duck legs with sweet potatoes and daikon- Oxtail and shiitakes with quinoa- Aromatic short ribs with root vegetables- Curry beef with potatoes and onions- Orange-ginger lamb shanks with barley- Garlic with osso buco with celeriac- Pork belly with jalapeno-pineapple salsa- Chicken and tri-bell pepper chow mein- Kung pao chicken with house rice- Beef shiitake and broccoli stir-fry- "French Dip" orange beef- Green peppercorn beef with asparagus and rotini- Pork kimchee with noodles- Gingered pork with leeks- Scallop and bacon fettuccine- Clams with pork and jicama- Black bean scallops and zucchini- Black pepper sake mussels with granny smith apples- Mirin clams and leeks- Sweet and sour mango pork- Beef and onion "sukiyaki"

Lynne Diebel grew up in southern Minnesota and has lived in Stoughton, Wisconsin, since 1974 with her husband, Bob Diebel, and their four children. Her many books are centered on the landscapes and natural world of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Lynne has been canoeing lakes since childhood. Ms. Diebel is a very good writer but her constant, and I do mean constant, complaints about dams, farmers, industry, the DNR, the Interior Department goes beyond complaining and heavily, past carping, and well into whining. I enjoyed reading about the sights and sounds of the flora and fauna on her trip. I am pretty sure we wouldn't like each other. Save your $20 and buy another canoeing book.

This book reminds me of Barbara Kingsolver’s writing. It’s part history, part conservation, and partly just a great story of some of my favorite landscapes and rivers and the people who paddle them.

A GREAT BOOK. I have just completed the first chapter and have already learned a great deal about the history, geology, and geography of the area. Anyone who spends time in the driftless area should read this book.

The author has a wealth of regional geologic knowledge, writes beautifully descriptive narrative, and gives an honest, humorous account of a married couple on a canoe trip. Smart and thoughtful; the reader will come away with enlightened appreciation for ecosystems in our waterways.

This book is definitely worth a read for anyone canoeing the driftless region. As I read the numerous accounts by DNR scientists I was discouraged to think about how many of these folks are no longer at the DNR. Call it science cleansing. I was disappointed that there was no mention of Professor Phil Lewis and the work of the Environmental Awareness Center. Lewis, a U.W. Landscape Architect, was one of the first people to teach the small communities of the Driftless Region about their unique landscape. The 1964 Wisconsin Blue book has an article capturing the process he used to identify environmental corridors. The largest concentration of environmental corridors lie in the driftless region. While much of the book focuses on urban/rural clashes, Lewis via his U.W. Extension appointment worked with small communities mentioned in the book on community plans that paid closer attention to the environmental surroundings....Prairie du Chien, Boscobel, Spring Green, Soldiers Grove and others. The 9 springs e-way, mentioned in the book was recently renamed the Lewis E-way in recognition of his contributions and those of his wife Elizabeth. On page 133, there is brief mention of the relocation of Soldiers Grove and a reference to, "a story for a later chapter" that never appears. That story, and the involvement of Lewis can be found by googling "Phil Lewis Soldiers Grove".Al Anderson, another U.W. Extension educator was also missed in this book. Al had a significant role in the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. Al was also involved in the economic analysis of trout fishing in the Driftless region that is mentioned in the book. Further discussions with people like this would have yielded a more balanced assessment of the community's perspective of these fabulous river systems.

A geologic history lesson, wrapped in a lovingly written story of paddling the rivers of the non-glaciated upper Midwest. Thank you for the education and inspiration!

I love to eat Japanese dishes. Beautiful pictures of the final products.

I'm glad I got this book. It brings back memories of when I used to go over my friends house for the holidays. His parents would serve up these delicious and yet simple meals. Got this book yesterday and made four of the dishes already. The ingredients in this book is easy to find in most Asian markets. The recipes are simple and they taste like I remembered. Thank you Muriel.

Muriel Miura began her career as a home economist with Hawaii's Gas Co. She's hosted her own cooking shows. One of them called Cook Japanese which was aired on Hawaii Public Television in the early '70s.She's also an author of numerous cookbooks. In 1974, as a way to help pay for her daughter's private school tuition, she wrote Cook Japanese: Hawaiian Style which she self-published. This cookbook has become a classic and is now out of print. Thanks to her daughter's encouragement to revise and reprint this cookbook for her children, Muriel Miura's classic is once again available for a whole new generation to enjoy.The cookbook is sectioned into three parts:Part One: Things Japanese. . . My mother gave me this book a year ago when I wanted to make some Japanese food for my girlfriend (non-Asian). I liked it because the recipes were easy to follow, worked well, and had Japanese flavor and Hawaii flavor. I also like it as a Japanese-American cookbook, and being Japanese American, I don't see them too often. While it might not be the most "authentic" Japanese food (it's close), it is authentic Japanese Hawaii food and well worth the price.

Great recipes of Japanese Cooking as they do it back Home.... this is a GREAT cook book and I bought it on a recombination by a friend!

Gorgeous transfers! Unfortunately , they do not transfer well at all . They are very easily smeared and make multiple lines instead of a clear transfer .

I put some of these on tees for my granddaughter. We fabric painted some and I embroidered one. Easy to work with.

Nice butterfly patterns to be used for various purposes. The drawings are actually fairly realistic, so can be used for a variety of applications.

Patterns are very intricate. If you like embroidering on a really focused level, then these iron on are for you.

If you are interested in embroidering, painting or appliqueing butterflies, this little book is perfect and great value, especially as the transfers (86 in varying sizes) are all iron on. There are plainer and fussier butterflies, butterflies on plants and flowers and clear instructions on transferring to fabric, dark fabrics and wood. Highly recommended!

for the most part they turned out ok but some of the iron ons didn't show that well on the second transfer

To be honest, coming from a thirteen year old girl who has been writing novels since the young age of seven or eight, this book is absolutely wonderful. I don't know who will disregard my opinion on it, as I am so young, but this novel workshop is very handy and a very good method for planning out books. I no longer have to plot out novels on pieces of printer paper, losing them every few days or so. Instead, I am actually able to plan out a novel on these books instead. It's really handy... as I am not really the average "happily ever after" writer. The several different ways you can take this book are incredible. Instead of me always having to fill in the "What happens to the characters after they are happy in the end?" box, I am able to express my opinion better. This book is great.

I LOVE this journal. It has every little detail in there that you could possibly need for writing your novel. It is definitely geared towards NaNo project writing, but it works with any time of year. If you are doing NaNo, this journal would easily give you the 50k words that you need, and i feel like you'd be hard pressed to have a writer's block using this as a guide. But like I said, it's a great tool for any kind of novel writing. The only thing I'd change is being able to have a downloadable version for future use. I don't want to have to buy a new journal every time I start a new project, and other journals I've had that are like this have come with downloadable versions for verified purchases of the hard copy. Not a big deal and not enough to knock off a star for the review or anything, but perhaps a suggestion for the future.

I love reading. LOVE IT. I've always wanted to write my very own novel, but had NO IDEA how to start. Ready, Set, Novel!: A Workbook is a terrific tool. To my very great surprise and delight, the instructional areas are not bland or boring, but rather funny and witty. The exercises in it really help expand my mind, even if they make me think so hard that I get a headache from time to time. The workbook also has hysterical pick-me-ups and ... drum roll please ... every writers favorite thing - procrastination pages! More importantly, this workbook will help you flesh out your characters and give them depth, and I mean DEPTH. And while there are many blank spots/pages for you to write in, I'd still pick up a blank notebook somewhere to keep alongside this one, because with this book, and all the fresh and exciting ideas that will flood your mind, you may just need it.

I do not have a messy mind, so this book doesn't work *as* well with me, but I know most creatives are erratic and messy when brainstorming and I am sure this book will very much help. It came extremely fast, it was clean and the receipt was tucked into the front cover. Definitely would recommend buying for unifnished/unknown novel concepts.

This book is filled to the brim with tidbits to poke and prod your idea into a possibly life filled story. I say possibly, because it's a wonderful framework, but you still get the joy from all the legwork. It has questions for characters, character bio sheets, a space for a map, timeline, and helpful prompts that get the juices flowing even if you later cut or completely exclude the scene resulting. It does all of this in a more humorous, friendly spirit than many other writing aids I've come across.

This book is as entertaining as it is informative. There are clear instructions and suggestions as the author takes you on the journey from an idea to the first chapter. O highly suggest this to writers, both new and experienced, and young or old. Very helpful!

I never plan my stories. Ever. It’s just something I don’t do. The times I’ve tried ended with those stories being immediately abandoned. It’s like when I get the ideas down on paper/into a word document, my brain sees them and goes, “eh, good enough.”But! I was at my friends’ apartment the other night and was perusing their bookshelf when I happened upon Ready, Set, Novel! Intrigued, I opened it, expecting a boring writer’s guide or something, and was delighted to discover it was a workbook for plotting out a novel. I immediately pulled out my phone, went to Amazon, and bought it. It was waiting on my doorstep the *next* day. Four for you, Amazon shipping department.I began using the workbook last night and if this is the kind of thing I've been missing whilst planning a story, then boy do I have some lost time to make up for! The workbook is visually engaging and very fun to use, not to mention how well it reins in all the ideas vying to be used. It organizes everything nicely.I highly recommend this to anyone who's looking to start a novel (or even a short story). It's a wonderful tool. I'll probably end up buying six more.

Bought this as a gift for a friend and it was well received. I flipped through the pages before wrapping it, and it looked very interesting! I might have to get a copy for myself....

This is a memoir written in verse form. Go back to your teen and college years, to that time when you were out on your own, exploring the world and entering new relationships. Everything is scary and exciting as one breaks ties with family. But during the author's attempt to blend into the real world, she continuously walked into a wall of panic. Anxiety attacks, fainting spells, and moments of doubt and insecurity plagued Schutz during her young adult years. This true life book about mental illness was intense. I'll most likely read it again.

When Samantha Schutz first left home for college, she was excited by the possibilities-freedom from parents, freedom from a boyfriend, freedom from the person she was supposed to be. At first, she reveled in the independence-but as the pressures increased, she began to suffer anxiety attacks that would leave her mentally shaken and incapacitated.This is a very honest portrayal of someone suffering from an anxiety disorder. This story brought back memories of my own attacks when I went away to college. And just like the author shows, each episode is scary and you do start questioning your own sanity.The free verse style of writing makes the story even more real. The reader can't help but feel for Samantha as she goes through an episode, her experiences with meds, therapists, and how she comes to grips with not only her illness but her own sanity.I highly recommend this book.

Big pitfall with anxiety is the underlying certainty that no one can truly empathize with the state of your mind or that it is all merely pitiable. But hey, it's real and a heckuva lot of people deal with it. Nice to share in another's person's perspective for a bit and see how they've gone through a similar mental gauntlet. Reads like a well-put-together diary. As Samantha details her downs, up, and downs you see that you are not alone at all; just as there is hope for her (and you want there to be hope) so for your, as well.

Before I jump into it, I have to say that Schutz did a great and brave thing by publishing this book--without a pen name, no less. I can guess that the actual act of her writing down her life's struggle with Generalized Anxiety Disorder was a very therapeutic act in and of itself. It probably benefitted her, and definitely benefitted other teens struggling with this, and other mental disorders by giving them a real story they can relate to. The ending might not have been the fairytale we're all used to, but it was real. The prose in more popular books like Crank and Impulse are relatable to teenagers with mental health problems, but in the end the stories are just made up. This book is different because it remains relatable and inspiring despite the ending being ragged around the edges because it is the author's real story of her real life's struggle with a very real sickness. Schutz, while not in the visually based poem format Hopkins books are, still incorporates some beautiful language in her story that really helps the reader say, "yes, I know exactly what you're talking about, and I've been there, too." One of my favorite examples of this is when she states "I build myself safety nets but they bind me in a web" (1637). When I read this, I thought of all the times in my life when I had tried so desperately to avoid failing but in my efforts, had doomed myself to do so. I have certainly not heard this described with a better analogy than the one Schultz used, and I don't think one could exist. The style in the book, while not comparable to the eloquence and artistry that Hopkins demonstrated time and time again, is still noticeable, and enhances the interest greatly. She uses short sentences and also sentences that take up entire pages; her style matches the mood of the story being told at that point. This is something I enjoyed about the book. She uses cognitive questioning, asking herself things like, "when I try to save other people am I trying to save myself?"(564). Questions open the reader's mind and make them think about their own life. Maybe they are a saver too; maybe they try to save everyone around them. Are they trying to save themselves? Why do they do that? Questions like these also help the reader be interested in the story. Overall, the plot is not anything groundbreaking, and the struggles of adolescence are nothing new, but the style and the fact that it is an autobiography make this book worth reading.

I read this book all at once. My daughter, 15 also suffers daily with a panic disorder, as well as depression. I am very close to my daughter, and go through every attack with her. I really thought I understood how she felt, and what she was going through. However, reading this book REALLY helped me realize that I don't always understand. I almost felt like I could put put myself in her head. The feelings and desciptions that Samantha shares are EXACTLY what my daughter has been feeling and goes through every day. It helped me even more support and help me to continue the journey with my daughter, with empathy and patience. If anyone you love is dealing with anixiety disorder, I STRONLY recommend reading this book. I have read many books written by professionals on panic disorder and followed many blogs. This is the first book I have read that was written by a person suffering. I stumbled upon it and am very glad I did.

I too have had anxiety without any explanation and reading someone's struggles sometimes makes it easier to deal with your own. This was well written.

I first read this book in my eleventh grade year of high school, when I borrowed from the school library.I returned it and constantly kept thinking about the book, and how it totally spoke for me and what I was and still am going through.How I feel, and see things from my point of view. Great book for my 11-year old sixth grader to read, as he is a standout basketball player, who otherwise HATES to read. He got so into it, and into the suspense of how the big games were going to end! This is a natural book that demonstrates good sportsmanship values, and is tolerable for jock boys who hate to sit still and read.

My 8 yo really enjoyed this book even though he’s not really enthusiastic about reading.

Hot Hand was such an amazing book. It shows siblings to care for each other and to go out of your way to do something nice for one another. I'm a ten year old boy, I love basketball, and I have multiple siblings just like Billy. I think this book really inspires young readers just like me.

Good read for the age bracket. Did not give a five star because it was bought as a gift for a kids party give-away. Will have to confirm if the receiver actually read the book.

My 11 and 13-year-old boys enjoyed this. They had a hard time following some expressions.
