Dear Amazon-- the editorial review you supplied here about the author is totally erroneous and laughable!! Please correct it. This book is NOT authored by John Muir the nature-writer and conservationist, born 1838 and who died in 1914, BEFORE the volkswagen was even invented. This book is by John Muir (b1918– d1977) who was a structural engineer who worked for National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), who "dropped out," 1960s-style, to become a writer and long-haired car mechanic with a garage in Taos, New Mexico, and who specialized in maintenance and repair of Volkswagens. OMG!! This is exactly the sort of thing that makes the World Wide Web so damn dangerous Amazon. Fix it please!Peter Aschwanden's art work is awesome. It reminds me of R. Crumb. The detail is amazing. The book itself is a master-piece of entertainment and a great combination of art and technology. Reading it front to back will give the novice a good understanding of what makes the wheels go round and round. You might want to have a Haynes manual handy too, but you can't go wrong with Muir/Tosh Gregg for taking your bug apart and putting it back together again. It's just damn fun!

Still the BEST!I read this book for the first time when I was in college -- in the early 80's. That reading was for my 71 Karmann-Ghia. The second time, was while I was on an airplane in 2009 as I flew to pick-up my Porsche Speedster replica. Over twenty years later and everything flowed back into my brain about the elegance of the flat-four engine. And just like in the 80s, the dog-eared copy of the latest printing of this book sits on a shelf in my garage, next to the Speedster -- the pages of the chapter titled "Tune-up" dirty with used Castrol from my hands. Thirty years later, and life repeats itself, and that is a beautiful thing.

I had owned this book before, but gave it to the person who bought my old bus. A friend who is somewhat mechanically inclined but not familiar with air cooled VW's recently bought an old bug, so I got this copy for him. If you are looking for a Haynes, Chilton, or Motor manual, this isn't it. It is more of a novel, possibly a diary about (as the title indicates) keeping VW alive. It can be an entertaining read if you like dry humor, and it doesn't hurt if you can laugh when your projects occasionally dismantle themselves for unknown reasons. I will say it contains a ton of very useful information, some of which you may not find in any other VW manual, but you have to read it closely to glean it. Buy a used copy to save yourself the grease stains you will get on a new one, and save a buck or two. Personally, I believe it is a must read for the first time air-cooled VW owner.

I got this book when I was 14 for my 1974 VW Beetle. This book taught me how engines work, how to diagnose vehicles, and prepared me for becoming my own mechanic. Unlike other manuals when you need an image for the work you are doing you will find a hand-drawn version showing you exactly what to look for (check out the Distributor page for an example). We don't have the bug, but I got this for my partner and his first car. Though it's a newer VW, it'll still teach him to work on it because the principals are the same.

If you have an aircooled beetle, ghia, bus etc. this is THE Book for you. Illustrations are great, instructions are idiot proof (which is sayin something). If you aren't mechanically inclined but are willing to learn to work on cars like an aircooled VW you need to read this book like a novel. The guidance is great, tools and techniques used are generally excellent.

I bought an original copy of this great VW manual back in the 1960's but I can't really say I noticed any updates worth mentioning in the new copy.That being said, it's a must for any new or old VW owner. The illustrations alone are worth the price!!

I am not mechanically inclined, but I love my VW. This book has helped me keep my beloved Super Beetle on the road. Thorough (enough), yet easy-to-read, this is an accessible guide to VW maintenance. It will walk you step-by-step through most of what you need to keep yours running. Written with wit and humor, it is also a very enjoyable read.You may need some other manuals for more in-depth coverage of some topics, but this book is an excellent starting point.

If you own an air cooled VW, this is a must-have! The book is humorous, insightful and extremely educational. My VW mechanic, who has been fixing VWs for over 50 years, recommended this and loaned me his copy. I had to buy it, it was so good! It is the most comprehensive guide for classic VWs and is simple to read and understand for even the most novice mechanic. It demystifies the process and gives you confidence to maintain and repair your VW Bug/Bus/Ghia/Fastback/Squareback/Notchback/etc.

This is a beautiful text. The pictures are full color, the paper is glossy, the descriptions are concise and clear, and it is not too heavy to carry along. It is well organized. What it is missing is the basic biochemistry of microorganisms, which I could really use along with the text.

I found this work historical, biographical, and hermeneutic. The author brings the Sistine Chapel, including the Last Judgment, to life in interesting ways. He utilizes metaphor, mythology, and interpretation to integrate his ideas and others' interpretations of the frescoes. His historical sources are varied, but he utilizes the writings of two of Michelangelo's contemporaries primarily for biographical purposes. The work is straightforward and enlightening, and is very well written and sourced.

At the age of 23, I stepped into the Sistine Chapel, looked up and thought, "So this is it?" As I stared at the ceiling the figures seemed to come alive and I was mesmerized. 50 years later I still remember that moment. My only complaint about this book is that I would have liked for the pictures to be next to the text rather than the pictures all at one time. I recommend having a copy of the painting as you read the descriptions and interpretations. It is a good study of a one-of-a-kind work of genius.

Well done but the best book on the subject (in my opinion) is Ross King's Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling.

I enjoyed learning more about what life was like for the sculpture turrned painter, and conditions under Pope Julius 2. Without a Catholic background, I had much to learn. How could the author know what Michelangelo was thinking so long ago? The art talk and religious theory gets heavy at times, but this is the book to cover it. I regret that the Sistine Chapel closed before I could see it, but David and St. Peter's were wonderful on my one day in Rome.

Interesting book. Although I knew a lot about Michelangelo, this book had more less known information, making it pretty comprehensive..

this was a gift for my mother (a self admitted "Mike" fan [she hauled us off to Italy but we only visited cities where he had works exhibited....]) and she raves about it. Apparently she made notes on the first run thru and now plans to read it again just for fun

The author stays focused on the subject of the book, and I like his interpretations of Michelangelo's reasoning behind the painting's design, they seem logical and plausible. The author explains his conclusions in a linear and easy to follow fashion.I also liked when the author addressed details on some of the techniques used to paint the ceiling and also how the condition of the later paintings over the span of four years let's us compare Michelangelo's progress (painting freestyle and with increased speed) as a painter.

It's okay is a bit of a stretch. This book is well composed, but not well written. This is really the fault of the editors who didn't have anyone proof read it apparently. There were lots of misspellings, awkward phrasing, repetition of words, etc. There were also errors in the simple trig that they did in chapter 1. They claimed that cosine is the adjacent divided by the hypotenuse. Get something better if you're interested in solid state physics unless they decide to fix the grammatical errors in a new edition.

It's Aphra Behn. Good grief. Of course it's splendid! Better critics than I have raved appropriately about her plays. I don't like the book's binding as it's hard to keep the book open flat on a table without risking breaking its spine. A problem with this Oxford World Classic series.

Excellent collection of Behn's 18th century English plays!

The text is fabulous. Providing access to an underappreciated female writer is desperately needed. The modernized spelling is wonderfully accessible. But using endnotes rather than footnotes to explain all unusual words, references, etc. is unbelievably frustrating. And not even endnotes after each play - endnotes at the end of the book! I am dizzy from flipping back and forth several times each page to the end of the book.

I would recommend it to every person studying English Literature - as I am doing- and simply to anyone who wants to enjoy a great play.

Needed this play for a class in college, and ordered. It arrived within a week, and was in great condition.

Recently introduced to the works of Aphra Behn, I found this collection to be an excellently laid out edition of some of her plays. The print is friendly to the eye (many collections of Restoration drama are not) and easy to read. I can only speak for "The Rover", as I have not had the time to read the rest of the plays. However, I found the notes and the forewards to the plays to be informative and easy to follow. It must be said that the notes were contained in the back of the book, as opposed to the bottom of the page; that was a bit of an irritant, especially when reading a crucial scene. On the whole however, I give this book a thumbs up!

This is an exceptional book with perfect pictures of the projects within. I grow gourds every year to make hand painted birdhouses out of and when I saw this book (I checked it out from the library first) I thought to myself "Wow, you really need to get busy you've got alot of crafting to do with those gourds!" It is an awesome book and I am happy that I added it to my library of books. The price is good, too.Gourds are easy to grow. In fact if you don't keep an eye on them they will take over more than the space you arranged for them in your yard and there are many volunteer gourds just waiting in every seed that is inside each and every gourd. If you like a certain gourd from your crop, dry those seeds and plant them the following year and you will have a whole vine of those gourds with that years crop and the seeds seem to last forever. My husband was cleaning the seeds out of one last year and he must have dropped a few on the ground because this year we had volunteer gourd vines all over by the trash can out back. They are definitely prolific.

This is a really great book for inspiration in creating your own gourd dolls and spirit figures. Artists are creating the most incredible art works with gourds and it's wonderful to see the many ways they can be fashioned. There are a few tips for techniques, but I would have liked additional information for some of the other techniques to create these wonderful objects, such as other products used.

The book arrived in absolutely brand new condition. I am a hobbyist dollmaker and I found this book truly inspirational. Can't wait to try my hand at making gourd dolls. The pictures are a feast for the eyes. There is lots of information in the book, plus many projects. I was thrilled with this purchase.

As a gourd artist, I wasn't able to find much information on creating figural pieces with gourds when I first began. Ginger and Jim have done an incredible job of compiling work from a variety of artists with different styles.There is a great history on dolls in different cultures in the beginning of the book that I found fascinating. Different techniques for creating figures are shown in many styles as well as mediums. Probably the very best thing about this book is the abundance of pictures throughout. It will give you great inspiration to come up with your own creations!

There is a wealth of information in this book on how to construct gourd dolls of all types from all cultures. I love the fact it is a hard covered book and that it has a gallery of works and links to artists so you can check out all of their works.

This book is so WONDERFUL. I am eager to begin projects soon. Ginger has done a fabulous job in presenting all the projects to inspire creativity.

A world of inspiration ! Dolls and spirit figures by multiple gourd artists, I love it ! This is my newest favorite gourd book.

I should have ordered this book when it first came out. it is wonderful, and based on other books from these authors, I should have known. it is complete,informative, and makes the feel comfortable to do the work, as described. I highly recommend it to all gourd lovers...
