This book covers a crucially important period in the history of food in the USA. The time around WW1 is fascinating, and Veit brings attention to the growth of "domestic science" food reform, ans to the intense public attention paid to food during the war. Veit has found some amazing details about the period, so the book is full of surprises, and her writing is lively and reader-friendly. This would be a wonderful book for a seminar on food and nationalism, or a class on American history.

I had no idea that events leading up to WWI contributed to our modern diet. After reading the book, I had a much better understanding of my grandmothers and their attitudes toward food—which they of course passed on to my parents and eventually me. I’d love to find more books like this one. Very insightful.

Modern Food, Moral Food is an excellent resource for 20th-c. food historians. It is also very approachable for the non-academic reader. Helen Zoe Veit's work explains the complex ways that Americans came to see certain foods as having a quality of righteousness.

Chapter 1 Way Down SouthMost of the time, I’d run late in the afternoon. The temperature would still be over one hundred in the summertime despite the sleepy sun. Wearing my one pair of sneakers and a ragged shirt and shorts, I’d grab a small towel from my mother before heading out. Out the front door and into the country. The roads were dirt-covered, as there was no pavement where we lived. I’d run and kick dirt off my heels as I passed our neighbors’ houses and waved to passersby. Being in the sticks of Mississippi meant “neighbors” could be miles apart. As cars passed me, the tires spewed up dirt all over my face and clothes as I made my way around the seven-mile or so circular journey. With sweat running profusely down my face, the towel came in handy, but in the last mile or so, when my body was aching, I’d often throw it to the side. When I returned home to our house in the country, life—as I knew it—picked up again.Close your eyes and imagine a small town in the Deep South. A certain picture probably pops up: dirt roads, pickup trucks, hot sweaty August days. Whether you have visited the area, or simply recall a small southern town from a movie, your image is probably close to reality. Now picture that same small town much, much smaller. That’s the best way to introduce my hometown of Crawford, Mississippi. There are no stoplights, very few street signs, a few broken-down sidewalks, and not that many people—somewhere between five hundred and a thousand back when I was growing up. But not only were we small in numbers, it seemed like we were all distant cousins. Everyone knew everyone else, and everyone old enough to be a parent was a parent to all the kids. You couldn’t get away with much.I was the sixth of eight kids born to Joe and Eddie B. Rice, two native Mississippians. There were my older siblings, Eddie Dean, Joe, Tom, Jimmy, and James, and my younger ones, Loistine and Zebedee. We were a big family, but close. I shared a bedroom with three of my brothers, so sometimes we were too close! We lived on seven acres in a house that my father built with his own hands, about thirty minutes outside of the “town” of Crawford. So you can imagine just how far out we lived. There was thigh-high brush, swampland, wild horses, and dirt roads, not to mention the nearly triple-digit weather most days. We had a few neighbors “within calling distance,” as my mother would say, including my grandparents. I was a true southern boy from the sticks. My father, Joe, stood six feet, and weighed maybe 280 pounds. He was the provider for the family and the rule-maker, and oh, how we all followed the rules. My father was intimidating and could be mean—very mean—but in the way he thought was right. Life was hard and he believed it was his job to prepare us for it. His intimidating scowl and raised voice would scare a common man, let alone a group of children. Occasionally, I saw a different side to my dad, a side that rarely raised its head. He loved to fish, and I would tag along on the hour-long walk to a nearby lake where he would stake his spot and search for catfish. He was relaxed on the lake and took joy in snaring a big one. But he didn’t fish that often, which meant most of the time, my “other” dad was in control. His hands were crusty from so many days out in the Mississippi sun building homes, laying bricks, brick by brick, day after day, all year long; sometimes he’d work two or three different jobs to get money. In the South close to thirty years ago, affection wasn’t shown much between parents and children, or even between parents. When it was time to be tough, my father could be tough. If one of us did something wrong, my father would instruct us to go into the backyard and pick a stick—a stick he would then use to beat us on our behinds and back, to teach us a lesson or two. Sometimes he pulled out a large leather belt and whipped us good. The extension cord hurt as well. He would whip me and my brothers and my sisters—no one was immune. The beatings hurt so bad that they were a good deterrent to keep us all out of trouble. I remember one evening, when I was about fourteen years old, a few of my brothers and sisters and I snuck out of the house to go to a neighbor’s to watch the Jackson Five perform on television. We didn’t have a TV but we were big Jackson Five fans. So, despite my father’s insistence that we not leave the house, we did. The beatings upon our return left a mark—literally and figuratively. But that’s how they did it where and when I grew up. I guess the fear of getting hit by the stick and the intimidating look on my father’s face kept pushing me to do the right thing. And it still does.My mother, Eddie B., was short, a conservative woman with a grand heart who welcomed any and all into our home for lavishly cooked meals. She raised us while my father worked. But despite the economic struggles, I think it’s safe to say that my parents did a pretty good job raising all of us, treating us all as equals. On Sundays we would go to the Pinegrove Missionary Baptist Church for services as a family and in the evenings we would sit around the dinner table together. That’s just what we did.My childhood was like that of many young boys—I played sandlot football into the night, read Sports Illustrated under the covers, and bellyached when it was time to get up and go to school. In the summertime and over the holidays, I worked with my father laying bricks for homes and businesses. Bricklaying is demanding, tough work. We would be up at five a.m. and work until sundown. My brothers and I would be the supply chain for my father, who actually laid the brick and mortar onto the structure. It was our job to make sure that the bricks were ready to be laid down and the mortar prepared to be spread. On many occasions, I was the last link between the bricks and my father. My brothers and I would bring the bricks to a worksite and pass them from one to another until handing them to my dad for placing. Often, when my father had moved on to the second floor of a structure, I would balance myself on the scaffolding two stories up and catch bricks that my brothers would throw to me from the ground. (Some like to say that’s where my great catching hands for football came from—I’m not so sure. Brick-catching requires hard hands and an aggressive approach; catching a football requires soft hands to cradle. Regardless, the hand-eye coordination had to help me down the road.)Bricklaying wasn’t fun work, but it earned us money, some of which I turned over to my parents to help pay for clothes and groceries. I do remember how anxious I was to make sure there was always a brick and mortar for my father. I didn’t want to let him down. Time is money in the bricklaying business, so any slowdown in supply cost my father money. That’s a lot of pressure on a teenager. I was afraid to fail. But you know what? Fear of failure isn’t always a bad thing. It helped keep me focused on the task. And a fear of failure has carried me through my life. It’s probably a big surprise to many of you that I am so insecure about success. In fact, it took me years to admit that fear is at the root of my performance. It goes against much of what the literature and “gurus” out there insist, that you have to let go of your fear to ever be successful; that you can’t be afraid to fail. I don’t think that’s an absolute. My fear of failing as a child carried over onto the football field in high school and then college. I was so concerned about not being successful that it pushed me to be successful. All of those extra hours in the gym or on the track or on the practice fields were more than just about hard work; they were about avoiding failure. Before every game of my NFL career I was scared—scared to drop the big pass, scared I’d let my teammates down. And now I realize it all goes back to not wanting to disappoint my father. My parents’ parenting proved that hard work and shared responsibility works. There were no slackers among us, as everyone had to pull their weight. Mom and Dad taught us that money is not everything. Mom insisted that love was the only thing we all needed. We went without on many occasions, meaning we didn’t have many pairs of pants or shoes. Even a hearty meal at dinnertime was a luxury on many nights. There were other ways to make money besides bricklaying when I was growing up in Mississippi, and one of those jobs may surprise you. A big revenue stream for business owners down south was agriculture, particularly cotton and corn. To get the goods to the market, the products first had to be picked from the ground. I know what you’re thinking: Isn’t picking cotton something slaves did? Yes. But I didn’t think of it that way. I saw it as a way to buy groceries for my family and some clothes for myself. My siblings worked alongside me in humid heat, picking the corn stalks, baling hay, and yes, picking cotton. I was certainly aware that many blacks in the south had been forced to pick cotton for centuries but that didn’t stop me from earning a day’s wage. Some of our black friends and neighbors refused to work in the fields and questioned why we were willing to. But to me, it was about earning money, and since we were being paid, I never thought of it as trampling on the memory of our forefathers and mothers and I still don’t.Sure, there was racism in Mississippi. We’re talking about the 1960s and 1970s, a time when the civil rights movement was under way but slow to reach parts of America. Yet growing up, I never once experienced racism firsthand. No one called me the N word, no one painted racist slogans on our home or burned a cross on our lawn; we were lucky. But from what family and friends told me, I also knew I probably would get dirty stares if I walked into certain parts of the county that were predominantly white. Maybe it was because of my skin color, maybe because I couldn’t afford many of the goods on store shelves in those areas. I did have a few white friends, a few white classmates, but for the most part, blacks surrounded me. There was an area down Route 12 we called the Crossroads, where blacks and whites hung out, but never together, and I did go down there on occasion, but always stayed with the blacks. (Years later, after I made it in the NFL, the whites didn’t give me nasty stares when I hung out in “their” area, probably because I wasn’t just some black guy from the country.)One of the more unusual aspects of living out in the country lands of Mississippi was the thrilling and exhausting practice of riding wild horses. But this isn’t a Seabiscuit story where you would wake up early morning, walk out to the stable, pat your horse down, and hop on for a dawn ride. No, just getting on the horse was a challenge. You see, the horses ran wild over the countryside, so if you wanted to go for a quick jaunt on top of the animal, you first had to chase it down. And that takes a lot of work and patience. On a good day, it would take me forty-five minutes to an hour to chase down a horse. With no fences and no boundaries, just imagine the size of the pasture we were dealing with. (And when I went riding with friends, we had to chase down the first horse, tie him up or use him to chase down the others, before we actually got to have fun riding!)My favorite horse I called Pete. Boy, was he fast. He could make quick turns (like a good wide receiver) and his black mane made him easily identifiable. As time went on, I got faster chasing down Pete and the other horses. You would be amazed at what experience teaches you. I realized that it wasn’t about being in the spot the horse was; it was about being in the spot the horse was going to be. I began to think one step ahead and it actually slowed down the chase for me.I loved to play sandlot football or shoot hoops outside on the farm but I was never in love with any one sport and certainly never thought one would be part of my destiny. I remember Fourth of July cookouts and baseball games and I remember the Christmas days when I was given a new football. I never asked for one, I just got them. I’d go outside and toss the ball around with my brothers, but never put much thought into playing the game for real. I did read about and watch guys like the Dallas Cowboys’ Drew Pearson and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Lynn Swann. I appreciated how they dominated the game—but I never wanted to be them. I watched our high school team play and was impressed by our quarterback, little man Kent Thomas, who was just five foot eight, but who took command of the huddle and the field, wore his uniform crisp and clean, and earned the respect of his teammates. My older brothers were my playmates and teammates in our mock games of football or basketball or even the simplest games of skill. Tom and James were tremendous athletes. James could catch, shoot, and hit better than just about anyone I knew—and he was born deaf. To compensate for his handicap, James used his intelligence. Boy, was he smart. But while we did all we could to help him be social, it wasn’t enough. So, when I was just ten and James sixteen, we drove up to Jackson, Mississippi, to a school for the deaf and settled James into his new home. We were devastated to leave him behind. But the school turned out to be a great thing, and James soon learned sign language and made all kinds of friends. He would return to Crawford to work with my father in the bricklaying business. Despite not being able to hear or speak, James was a legitimate bricklayer, earning the real money, while most of us—his siblings—were merely helpers. From the Hardcover edition.

#408,202 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

To sum it up, I like Jerry Rice less now after learning more about him through his biography. I appreciated learning about his humble beginning, but throughout the entire book he remained mostly egotistic and still held on to many grudges, such as the media attention was more on Joe Montana than on him for the Superbowl XXIII in which he was named the MVP. He attributed that to race, which being Asian I can understand why he wouldn't like it and it's something that he should have voiced, but he was still upset about it to the date the biography was written, among several other things that he said he was still upset about to the date the book was written. Secondly, most of the book was talking about how hard he worked which all the 49er and NFL fans already know or most of them already do. As a fan and a reader, I'd like to know how he made the transition, going from a tiny Mississippi town to a world-class cosmopolitan city of San Francisco, or how he adjusted to the pace of the NFL, or how he handled conflicts - as a fan I already know lots about him and of him as a football player, I wanted to learn more of Jerry Rice as a human being. There was also this constant conflict where Jerry iterated a number of times that his value wasn't about money but later in the book he clearly conveyed that he regretted not having capitalized on his fame during his peak for more commercial deals. If he truly meant not about money, he would have messaged it to something like, ...probably could have signed more commercial deals but we're already very blessed financially and I'm ok with it... something to that extent.I may not have felt that way if I read the book at the time it was first published before he got divorced, but in the chapter where Jerry talked about Jackie's near-death experience giving birth to their 3rd child, it feels like he was overcompensating it trying to conceal his infidelities when he kept saying '... the love of my life...', '...my beloved...', and within a couple years of publishing the book Jackie filed for divorce and his infidelities came into light. The biggest turnoff for me was in epilogue where he devoted a good chunk of time criticizing other players, calling Alex Smith an overrated QB, among other players that he called out, what for? To make himself look better? He also criticized John Taylor, how Taylor never worked that hard and only did enough to be good enough, and how he didn't understand why Taylor wouldn't work harder to be great like himself. "Imagine how great he'd be if he had worked harder?" Jerry asked in the book. Maybe not everyone wants to reach the sky, and John's goal was to be good enough to win a Superbowl and be ok with that, but who is he to judge and expects everyone to be like him? Finally, I don't know who did most of the actual writing, Jerry or Brian, but thoughts were not well organized, like in one place he was talking about Rich Gannon with Oakland Raiders, and within a few sentences in the same paragraph, his kids came up, I couldn't make the connection, I was expecting elaboration on certain play that worked out well or horribly, or how their relationship and chemistry developed, or whatever related to football, the Raiders and Rich Gannon. But being a 49ers fan, I'm glad I read it, it's always nice to get to know a player or former player better even though you may end up liking them less.

My takeaway for" Go Long" is that I learned a little what motivated Jerry Rice. The fear of failure, the insecurity and the need to please his father and later his coach Welsh. Some superstars rely only on their talents, Lawrence Taylor and others but Jerry Rice have it in their DNA to overachieve, the work ethics is amazing. He worked out like no one, he knew he might not be the most talented(which I think he was, the records speaks for themselves) but no one will out practice him, or work harder then, Jerry Rice. That was his mindset for his own career. And yet, he regrets not spending more time with his family. He never took a vacation, he was always working out and practicing. I learned a few other things, his trauma of almost losing his wife and behind the scenes of Dancing with the Stars.Another takeaway is that he was not afraid to take risk, he took risk going to a small college, leaving the San Francisco and doing a reality show of professional vs. regular Joes. I admire that in him. Actually I admire his awesome work ethic and his willingness to go beyond his comfort zone What I didn't admire is that like so many superstars, he waited too long to retire. Supposedly, his agent fax Jerry interest in playing football to all the teams. He was and is too classy for that. I admire those that retire winning, a la Tony La Russa. And they were some instances of his ill feelings for the 49ers when they let him go and to the winners of the Dancing with the Stars because some of the contestants had prior dancing experiences- again Jerry is a classy guy, I wish he would have taken the high road in both instances. There were a few more but nobody is perfect.I love Jerry Rice and I do recommend the book.

Another book my son used for a book report. It was a great read for him. He is in the 3rd grade and it was easily read. He really liked the fact that Jerry started his journey as a kid cutting school and running away from the VP of the school.

Jerry Rice has routinely been called the all time greatest reciever for the last 20 years. This title does not do him justice. In football, the goal of the offense is to move the ball and score points...preferably touchdowns. The goal of the defense is to prevent this from happening. Jerry Rice could not be stopped by the Giants, the Bears, the Cowboys, the Steelers, the Broncos nor any one else at any time in his career. He not only is the all time leader in catches, yards and touchdowns, no one else is even close. This man is quite simply the greatest football player of all time. Jerry touches on his life and career from high school, college and the NFL. He speaks of his legendary work ethic, the fact, that in his opinion Joe Montana was superior to Steve Young, and, as a devoted family man and husband, the ordeal he went through when his wife faced life-threatening complications after giving birth. This a an interestng, quick read about a classy individual as well as a superb player and would reccomend it to any football or sports fan.

I've never been a 49er fan, but I've always admired Jerry Rice for his skill and work ethic. There has never been a better wide receiver. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Jerry doesn't shy away from controversial opinions about team mates and other players and he addresses his own mistakes and shortcomings in an up front way. I also appreciated the way that the book went beyond the usual sports bio in terms of teaching good life lessons based upon what the athlete actually learned through experiences, good and bad. Having rooted for Jerry in Dancing With the Stars, I was also intrigued by his motivation for doing the show and enjoyed the behind-the-scenes information and analysis of his experience there.

Jerry Rice does a great job of moving you through his life, and give you life lessons that he learned and wants to pass on. A true champion.

Amazon.com Review

Two favorites from one of the world's best-loved creative teams--Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd--are collected in a sweet little board-book gift box. The Runaway Bunny and Goodnight Moon are the quintessential children's bedtime books, adored for generations by sleepy tots and their parents. In this gift edition, the two volumes are tucked snugly into a sturdy cardboard sleeve, illustrated on each side with the familiar book covers. No nursery bookshelf--or bedside table--is complete without a copy of each of these all-time classics. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

From the Back Cover

Goodnight Moon In a great green room, tucked away in bed, is a little bunny. "Goodnight room, goodnight moon." And to all the familiar things in the softly lit room -- to the picture of the three little bears sitting in chairs, to the clocks and his socks, to the mittens and the kittens, to everything one by one -- he says goodnight. In this classic of modern children's literature, beloved by generations of readers and listeners, the quiet poetry of the words and the gentle, lulling illustrations combine to make a perfect book for the end of the day. The Runaway Bunny Clement Hurd redrew some of his pictures for this new edition of the profoundly comforting story of a bunny's imaginary game of hide-and-seek and the lovingly steadfast mother who finds him every time.

I grew up and loved both of these books as a child! My one year old could really care less about these stories (or the pictures), but I'm hoping she grows to love them!

Both my husband and I were read Good Night Moon as babies, and we both are set on passing the love on to our own children. I was already familiar with Runaway Bunny, which is why I jumped on this box set. (I had the joy of introducing it to my husband as well as my tiny ones.)My complaint and three stars is for Good Night Moon. (It's a simple rhyme story that goes through the room and says good night to all the objects. Very cute story.) The story begins with the light on, and then in the last half of the book the light turns off. In this particular set, the light off pages are very, very dark. It's very difficult to see the images on these pages even in normal light, and would be impossible under low light. Also, any child/adult with vision problems might not be able to see any of the detail at all, even in normal light. The picture was taken under a skylight and compares the book from this set (left) to the book I was replacing (right). Both are board books. We previously had a board book for Good Night Moon that didn't have this issue, so I think perhaps we simply ended up with a badly printed one. (Especially as Runaway Bunny did not have this issue.) I still highly recommend both stories, but I will have to replace the one book.

I gave my grandson these two books a while ago. I believed he was around two years old. He loved "Good night moon". I used to read it to him before going to bed and I explained every detail in the pictures. After reading it he used to pass the pages back and forth and looked at the pictures. I explained to him about all the objects found in the bedroom and in that way he learnt new words. Sometimes he turned out the pages and he himself named almost all the objects. He loved round shapes and the first thing he recognized was the moon. Then we compared the differences between the two pictures of the bedroom. I have to confess that my first impression was that the book was very simple, but then I realized how much this book -text and pictures- attracted him. The. colours of the bedroom with deemed lights I believe entice to sleep.Nice book for children until two years old to be read before going to bed, simple, cozy and very good for observation,

My little granddaughter and I spent much time reading this story. It is a dear classic, and very interesting for a young beginning devotee of books. Now, that my granddaughter is in school, and so much more sophisticated, the age of 6, I remember this story with great fondness, and I've bought it recently for another tiny little one. I hope he loves it as much as we did. If you've not met the script--it goes over a litany of things to tell goodnight, including the moon. It is not based in reality, but flies off, to a lovely, soothing imaginative realm, where a room is filled with creative objects: In the great green roomThere was a telephoneAnd a red balloonAnd a picture of thecow jumping over the moon.....the rhyming litany goes on, to tell all the objects goodnight. The repetitiveness is appropriate as an earliest intro to bedtime stories.

A pair of the books I read most often to our 4 children nightly for many years. I still know most of the lines by heart and the kids are all in their 20s. Purchased this for my new granddaughter. Can't wait to snuggle her on my lap and read what had been her father's favorite book - and the one he began 'reading' to his sister almost as soon as she was born. Our copies weren't board books and are tucked away in my 'treasures' box.

I loved how it came as a set with Runaway Bunny. Both of those books were my children's favorite stories when they were young. The board books are sturdy for little hands and no worries about tearing pages.

Always a favorite, I purchased this set (once again) as a baby shower gift. Goodnight Moon is a timeless, sweet, rhythmic story to put any little one into bedtime slumber and The Runaway Bunny is adorable with sweet illustrations in a dreamlike sequence. No wonder these Margaret Wise Brown tales are classics! This makes a sweet and affordable baby gift whose stories will become favorites for babies and their parents just before the lights go out at bedtime.

One of the books was printed upside down, which is quite an annoyance. This results in us just reading one of the books so I wish we would have ordered one rather than the set and saved the money for another book.

Was sent as a gift to my friend's granddaughter who is one year old. Granny is already getting sick of Goodnight Moon because she has had to read it so many times. A great book for bedtime reading! I am an elementary school reading specialist and I highly recommend this book for preschoolers and beginning readers.

I purchased this to read to my daughter before her first dentist visit. It starts out with George hurting his tooth while eating an apple and just goes downhill from there. Lots of pages where George is scared as well as one of him running down the hall away from the dentist looking terrified. Of course it has a happy ending, but the fear aspect of it all is just too much. I decided not to show it to my daughter, but she found it and insisted I read it anyway. I made up a different story and tried to make it sound happy, but she wasn't buying it. She went to bed and woke up saying "I no go to dentist. It's scary!" So mom fail on my part for leaving the book out for her to see, but yikes. Unless your kiddo is already afraid and/or needs to have a procedure other than cleaning done, this is NOT the book for you.

My 2.5 year old loves Curious George and is getting ready for her first dentist appointment. The book does start out with George being scared of the dentist and hiding from the dentist which I was worried my daughter would pick up on but we've been reading for a week and she doesn't seem phased by George's fear.

My grandson enjoyed reading Curious George Visits the Dentist Step-Into-Reading books. He can't wait to find out what happens at the end of the story. I would recommend the Step-Into-Reading books to other friends and family members with children who enjoys reading, and the desire to continue exceling in reading.

OK book. George gets scared at the dentist though. Not the best as we are preparing our kid for the dentist, but whatever. Similar story to the other George books so of course the kids like it.

Our toddlers love George books, this one is no exception. The only problem is that they will request to read them over and over and over and over and over......Fortunately there are a lot of them.

We read this to our son before his first dentist visit. He loved the book and wasn’t as scared the next day at his dentist appointment. The book prepared him for his visit and everything went smoothly.

We purchased this book for our three year old son before his first visit to the dentist. He gets a bit anxious if he doesn't know what to expect, and this book was perfect. We had a happy first visit. He asked if he could go to the dentist everyday!

Great book for toddlers! My son loves Curious George and this is one of his fav books ever!

I love the vivid illustrations along with the differing types of worship exampled in the book. My daughter loves to read this book to her little sister, and my youngest’s attention is captured each night. The prose eloquently and simply explains religious differences as well.

I purchased this for a friend’s new baby and I would buy it again and again. It teaches kids gratitude and mindfulness at a young age.

My children LOVE this book and it has easily become one of their favorites to read together. We have new discussions every time that guided by the beautiful illustrations. Because of how my kids respond to this book, i plan to buy more as gifts this holiday season.

I read to my son (6) every night before saying bedtime prayers and recently have focused on prayers and poetry. This beautifully illustrated book fit in perfectly. He especially appreciated the shorter prayers that we could then practice for bedtime and ones I could sing to him, like “This Little Light Of Mine” and “Kumbaya”. It explores different cultural prayers as well to broaden his horizons which led to good questions and conversation.

This is more than a condensed version of The Case for Mars, and contains an insightful critique of shortcomings at NASA. I've been "on board' with Dr. Zubrin's approach of a somewhat minimalist journey to Mars, coupled with a year and half stay as a precursor to building a continuous human presence on the Red Planet. His description and comments regarding the Mars sample return mission proposed by NASA are incisive, and point out the dangers associated with allowing a bureaucratic approach to space exploration. The complicated and very expensive mission panders to all the different groups within the space agency, and is highly reminiscent of the ill-fated GHW Bush "90 day plan," for a human mission to Mars. This is a very useful book when discussing travel to Mars. I gave it 5 stars, only because there wasn't a 6 star rating possible.

Zubrin doesn't fetish around with exaggerated, over-the-top-costly manned missions of the sorts that'lleasily be rejected by any economically driven, realistic business man or bureaucrat. Zubrin introduces acost-effective, direct approach which NASA could've committed themselves to in the 1980's. Too bad itnever turned out that way. Zubrin went off to found The Mars Society, and Mars Direct Plan was exiled tothe shelves where many other great ideas had been filed. This book is a recommendation to anyone who's been fooled into believing a Mars journey and settlementhave to be insanely expensive and profoundly complicated. Read it!

I thought this would be an edited-down pocket version of The Case for Mars, but it is not! of course it contains some of the same information, but also new stuff, written more recently... including some scathing indictments about "Apollo Mode vs. Shuttle Mode thinking" that won't make Zubrin any more friends at NASA. But sadly, he happens to be right. There's also an intriguing glimpse into Zubrin's meetings with Elon Musk and one possible scenario for how SpaceX might facilitate Mars exploration and (later on) settlement. That scenario works whether SpaceX serves as a NASA subcontractor or whether SpaceX does it independently with basic NASA cooperation (there's no substitute for the Deep Space Network, for instance). Definitely worth a read.If you already own The Case for Mars, this little book helps to update that case (to 2013 anyway). If you're new to Zubrin's thinking, this little book is a great place to begin.

I completely disagree with the review that said this is merely a condensed version of Robert's classic book, "Case For Mars". On the contrary, it shows that Robert can still weave his magic without merely rehashing old topics. True, the first of four parts of this book does summarize the Mars Direct Plan, but the rest is completely new material, material that would fit nicely into an updated Case For Mars edition.A few examples of the new material in this book covered with perfect Zubrin flair:-> How concerns for human safety have mired NASA, and how they compare with a rational, engineering risk analysis.-> An augmented plan, dubbed "Mars Indirect", showing how we could get to Mars using existing crafts from the SpaceX corporation.-> How the latest political onslaught has killed off the last bits of NASA in the recent 2010-2012 time frame.I think the timing was perfect for this publication to counter Buzz Aldrin's proposals, which make some interesting points, but seem hopelessly naive in their desire to work from within current politics.Warning - what is revealed about what the Obama administration has done to the remaining functional projects at NASA will infuriate you. It saddens me that we as a country have no issue launching a protest to save the Internet against SOPA, yet we won't do something similar to protect the 1% of NASA's budget that actually gets results.P. S. Amazon, Robert, PLEASE create a Kindle version of "Entering Space" - I view this as your best work, and it's my favorite book.

I like how Zubrin has hope for the future. I think we should have already gone to Mars. By not going we are saying we are scared to try. America never backs down from a challenge. At least not when we have good, sane leadership. Maybe we'll get lucky and get another Kennedy type who takes us to Mars and uses Zubrin's plan. Anyone who thinks we shouldn't is not worth listening to. We would learn so much from it and inspire ten times more innovation. We might even find some really important minerals on Mars that will further humanity. Let's do it no more excuses.

I enjoyed the optimism despite every reason to resent the masive failures sufferer due to the lack of leadership in the once great NASA. It is clear that we have to step up and take this vital challenge upon ourselves. We cannot wait, dependant on ANY government as the window for great governments is closed shut. We as scientists, inventors and humans :) have to learn to look inwards to achieve this great goal. Looking at governments wil postpone indefinitely, fact. Thank you for the great booklet, I look forward to an update.

During all the recent talk of asteroid missions, L2 stations in lunar space and such, Zubrin makes a great case once again for setting our sights directly on Mars. The technologies exist right now. There's no need for multi-decade delays awaiting better rockets. The Spacex Falcon-9 Heavy may be enough to get us there. A great read which gave me renewed hope that I might see human flights to Mars in my lifetime. This is an excellent read if you really care about a bright future for human space flight.

This very short book presents the best case I've read thus far regarding how and why we should go to Mars now. I far preferred it to the collection of short papers by a number of authors (including Zubrin) "Colonizing Mars-The Human Mission to the Red Planet" and I look forward to reading another of Zubrin's books "The Case for Mars", which I recently obtained directly from the author while at the National Space Society's 2013 annual conference.
