Palliative Care: A Guide for Health Social Workers

Review

"Palliative Care captures the central role of social work in care of seriously ill patients and families. Chapters are organized consistently with the domains of the National Consensus Project Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, further illustrating the role of social work across every domain. It is a 'Guide for Health Social Workers,' but the deep and rich content of this book could be a guide for all professionals." --Betty R. Ferrell, PhD, RN, MA, FAAN, FPCN, CHPN, Professor and Director, City of Hope "As our population ages, there will be an increase in illnesses such as cancer and heart disease, and this book will prove very useful to both the quality of care and the longevity of practitioners who are learning or might have many years' experience in the field and would value information on best practices in palliative care." --Penny Damaskos, PhD, LCSW, OSW-C, Director, Department of Social Work, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center "Everybody now knows that the majority of health care problems are driven by social determinants of health--lack of housing, food, safe neighborhoods, social supports--issues that the traditional practice of medicine is largely helpless to fix. This textbook illuminates the essential role of social work in addressing these factors during a serious illness. The effectiveness of palliative care in helping people living with serious illness to achieve what matters most to them is due to the determined advocacy and resilience of the social workers on our teams. This book shows how it's done." --Diane E. Meier, MD, FACP, Director, Center to Advance Palliative Care; Vice-Chair and Professor of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, Mount Sinai School of Medicine "Rooted in complex reality, the counsel in this book is intensive and practical. The authors and their editors push us to see beyond medical diagnoses to the person, and through the person to the social and cultural contexts that make us more than individuals. In other words, it succeeds in examining the enormous potential of palliative care, which, in practice, is still largely unrealized. Altogether, this book is a fantastic read for anyone interested in caring for humans." --BJ Miller, MD, Hospice and Palliative Care Specialist, UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center

The editors of this outstanding publication note that their intent is to “reaffirm the courage, mind, and heart at the core of health social work, and to highlight the ways that social work contributes to the care of seriously ill patients and their families.” They have succeeded in that intent. They highlight the important and necessary roles of health social workers with regard to achieving quality palliative care across the care continuum and ensuring outstanding patient/family-centered care. By combining social work theory and practice, evidence and case narrative, the book serves as a guide for clinicians, students, and educators alike. It is an excellent and comprehensive resource. As someone who has spent her career in health care social work, I am pleased to recommend this book. Elizabeth Clark, former CEO of NASW.

This excellent book is a must buy for any medical social worker. It is easy to read with relevant examples and case studies throughout the book. The information is very accessible and could be used by any social worker in the healthcare field or by other clinicians hoping to gain skills in the key aspects of palliative care. It is rare that I read a book beginning to end, but this one can be read fully or used as a handbook. I will use it in teaching as well as a personal resource for my clinical work. Thank you, this is a much-needed book for our profession.

As a palliative care social worker I am pleased to highly recommend this book. It is very useful in the real world of practice as it combines theory with clinical situations and gives clear examples of how to define our work. I think it will be useful guide to any health care social worker.Diane Weg Farquhar LCSWPalliative Care Social WorkerThe Mount Sinai HospitalNew York, New York

I would like to append my comment's to panopticonman's below (which I much appreciate). To contextualize myself, I am a graduate student in geography at UCLA. This quarter I am enrolled in a seminar which is reading this book, alongside Claudio Minca's volume "Postmodern Geography: Theory and Praxis." The seminar is run by Denis Cosgrove, a contributor to both volumes, and is attended by Karen Till (one of the editors of "Textures of Place") and Michael Curry, another contributor and former student of Yi-Fu Tuan. Furthermore, I have taken to identifying myself as a "humanistic geographer." Thus I have a particular insider's perspective on the work. Some minor corrections of panopticonman's comments, to contextualize the work itself. First off, humanistic geography is nothing new. Prior to this book, the most definitive statements on humanistic geography were produced in the mid-1970s, in a series of papers by Nick Entrikin, Yi-Fu Tuan, Ed Relph and Anne Buttimer (all of whom contribute to this volume), and a book titled "Humanistic Geography: Prospects and Problems." What makes "Textures" so interesting is that it is the first book in nearly 25 years to actually have the phrase "humanistic geography" in the title. In our (post)modern times, the very idea of 'humanism' has become less than fashionable, with some avowed postmodernists (see the Minca volume or "Place and the Politics of Identity") actually taking an "antihumanist" stance. Most of the contributors to "Textures" have wrestled with postmodernism before, and many would perhaps take issue with being labeled "humanists," but all have benefited from the work of Tuan and other humanistic geographers. So what you see in this volume is not so much work on postmodernism particularly, but rather on the viability and value of humanistic modes of inquiry in our postmodern context.Secondly, this book offers a very particular representation of academic geography. As panopticonman noted, what binds all the essays together is the presence (explicit or implicit) of Yi-Fu Tuan. (In fact, the book has its roots in a set of paper sessions held at a national meeting of the American Association of Geographers in Tuan's honor.) The three editors are all former students of Tuan (Till was his last formal student) and several of the contributors are former students. As well, quite a few of the contributors are colleagues of Tuan. The contributing geographers include several emeriti professors, several who have been active in the field since "humanistic geography" first emerged (and, indeed, helped to shape that perspective), and several who have begun their professorial careers in only the last 5 or 6 years. In other words, you have presented here close to 30 years or more of academic geography's history. This volume, then, is a good indicator not only of contemporary work in geography, but the historical trajectory which geography has taken. Furthermore, beyond the discipline of geography, you have represented the fields of English and American literature, art history, philosophy and anthropolgy, marking the influence of Tuan beyond his formal disciplinary boundaries. Finally, I would just like to offer something moving (slowly but inexorably) towards panopticonman's question: what is a geographer, anyway? Certainly for many of the contributors to this volume (and including myself, though I am merely a reader of the book, and lack an authorial presence), Tuan does offer a model of the ideal geographer. His intellectual project begins with a simple supposition: that geography is the study (and, following Sack's analysis, the practice) of how humans transform the world into 'home.' Tuan has been concerned throughout his career to analyze how people have actively shaped their world -- nature, relations with other people, even 'raw' space itself -- in order to transform it into meaningful places. This project involves active (materialist), normative, and aesthetic dimensions; these various dimensions are explored, singly and in combination, by the contributors to "Textures." As well, Tuan has exerted a significant pedagogical influence on geography, exemplified in Entrikin's closing essay of the volume. Entrikin identifies Tuan as "the perfect humanistic geographer," focusing on Tuan's understanding of liberal education and humanism as a philosophical outlook on the world (as expressed most particularly in "The Good Life"). The purpose of humanistic inquiry, for Tuan, "is to develop the whole person, to create a good person, and in this way to cultivate humanity" (Entrikin here connects Tuan's project up conceptually with Martha Nussbaum). This volume, drawing on the force of Tuan's personality and perspective, contributes to the cultivation of humanity through its engagement with the material, moral, and educational directives and achievements of contemporary geography.

Collections are difficult to review, especially one as wide-ranging as this. The thread that (supposedly) holds this collection together is that it is inspired by Yi-Fu Tuan, a "humanist geographer" (who, judging from his essay, and the many bouquets thrown his way in the other essays), is the very picture of a modernist major geographer. What is a geographer these days you might ask? If you were to read this book, you would have to believe that everyone who has ever read any postmodern thinkers on the subject of boundaries and/or space is a geographer. That means just about everybody, of course, as postmodernists are all about space and, dare I say it, spatiality. How soon will place be converted into platiality?Despite my snarky comments above, I like this book. Some of it postmodern ideas are only rearticulations of stuff hardcore guys like Derrida are known for, except here is is told from the perspective of geographers. I'm not sure what makes these folks geographers exactly -- in fact a couple of them are teachers of medieval literature -- but, I am sure that the majority of these essays are thoughtful and thought-provoking. Particulary fine is Wilbur Zelinsky's "The World and Its Identity Crisis" which sketches out a (very) shematic history of the world and our place in it. Here's a quote:"We find ourselves caged in a curious world of contradictions, of unprecedented personal and group anxieties. The freedom to comparison-shop among lifestyles, to rotate among multiple identities, this culmination of millennia of human struggle and progress, such power and flexibility, all this has failed to generate the bliss one might have anticipated or hoped for. Instead an increasingly large segment of First World populations, and incipiently others as well, has begun to wonder who or what they are, or should be."Here he is quoting Zygmunt Bauman:"Postmodernity is the point at which modern untying (dis-embedding, dis-encumbering) of tied (embedded, situated) identities reaches its completion: it is now all too easy to choose identity, but no longer possible to hold it. At the moment of ultimate triumph, the liberation succeeds in annihilating its object...Freedom...has given the postmodern seekers of identity all the powers of Sisyphus."So, this collection offers the general reader a chance to check out what's going on in the new world of humanist geography. Essentially it's re-thinking the ways the world, space and place have been thought about, and are thought about, which is what most post-modern stuff does. Good illustrations, mostly good writing which in some cases opens up new territory, and in others, treads over old, but still interesting, ground.

Where I'm coming from: I'm a backend developer who hasn't worked much with HTML and never got into front end design. I wanted to breach the barrier with a book that would provide me with what I needed to know to write semantically rich (x)html and style it without needing to become a guru. This book does that and more. The authors are professors but their tone is anything but dry. They're friendly but keep the content of each chapter rich with info, humor and advice on how to make use of it right away rather than wait to see some grand picture. The first half of the book introduces HTML but not as a grammar lesson. Rather it's always in the context of the kind of content you want to get out there and what the right tool (i.e.: tag) for the job is. The second half of the book explains how to style this content without any graphics intensive understanding. They show tableless one column and two column layouts and explain the various pitfalls beginners may have when attempting to set these up. There are also troubleshooting techniques explained (html and css validating, lurid palette to reveal what the divs in your document are actually doing...).The book also lives up to the "standardista" claim. There are constant explanations of standards when it comes to using lists, tables (for tabular data), vs. 's, vs. @import and a host of other confusing road forks are covered in plain english with an eye toward the practical but standard compliant approach. The companion site is excellent. Practically every example is shown there, so one can always look and compare to see that he or she is getting to where the authors want him to get.I feel very enriched by the material and less nervous about tackling more advanced books on the subject of web design and web content.

This is really a great book. I had been studying HTML and CSS from some other books for about six months before launching into this one, but the difference in quality is like night and day. I do believe that studying an easier and more basic book has helped me to get a lot more out of this book, but whether this is your first HTML/CSS book or the one that soon follows, this is a superior book (I can't imagine there is a better one out there) and I highly recommend it.HTML and CSS Web Standards Solutions is written in clear and easily understood language (easily understood for what it is, of course!). It is a step-by-step guide which will in the end give the aspirant a real foundation in how to design a website. The homework assignments are meaningful and in the end you produce a sample website whose principles are readily transferable to the kind of skills one needs to make his or her own personal website.Having an extremely basic and limited knowledge of HTML/CSS before reading this book, I have had a series of "aha!" moments where I understand not only the dry theory (what was covered in other books), but the practical why you do things the way the author's suggest inn addition to the necessary nuts and bolts theory. This is an invaluable approach which takes the reader way beyond the usual "do as I say" format to understanding why you do certain things and why you don't do others. In the end you are able to think for yourself when you design a website and not just follow a formula or set of instructions.I am making steady, and relatively painless progress thanks to the HTML and CSS Web Standards Solutions book. While the same topics are covered in many similar books, they are not, IMHO, covered as well, as clearly, or as comprehensively, as they are here.Hats off to the authors for a five-star job!

I have always wanted to design web sites but never had the time to go on courses. Then I found this book. Not only is it written in everyday language, it is easy to follow, has excellent example and allows you to see your work as you progress, it also has excellent and easy to access on-line support every step of the way. I felt comfortable with the chapters, how they were organised and it was like having a tutor standing right there beside you.It teaches XHTML emphasizing standards that will allow any website you build to be available to all browsers and includes information on how to make your website easy for those who use audio or other types of aides. You learn how to make clean, clear and well structured websites and all in XHTML with style sheets.A chapter on how to look for an ISP to host your site as well as recommendations on software, either free or at a relatively low cost as extremely helpful.I recommend this title for anyone who wants to build their own websites without the cost of purchasing expensive proprietary software. Become a Web Standardista today.

I have been involved in webdesign for over 16 years now and I will have to say this book is GREAT! It will walk you through the basics and easily get you on the way to more advanced programming languages.Pros:Easy to followQuick book to finishGreat PriceCons:NoneBuy the book!

This book is the best introduction to modern web site design I have yet come across. The authors are teachers and their focus is on understanding how HTML and CSS work together and why one should follow w3c standards when building a site. The result is a book that doesn't try to tell you everything you might want to know about web design, but will instead provide you with a solid foundation to build on.If you are new to web design, or have only worked with WYSIWYG web software before, this won't be the only book you need on your shelf, but reading it first will make it much easier to understand all the others.

great book

i have nothing bad to say about the seller or the product this book was very helpful and step by step in HTML and CSS. The book also has a website that helps you with all of the components you will need in order to build a site. i was also happy about the price because my bookstore at school is very expensive.

Old Virginia Houses: The Mobjack Bay Country and Along the James

From the Foreword: During the years I spent in a Richmond bookshop to a great extent devoted to literature about American backgrounds, we used to occupy our leisure moments discussing among ourselves and with collectors the need for a series of books about old houses in Virginia. . . . As time went on, however, our hope that someone would be found to carry out this project failed of realization. Finally it seemed to us that the only wayt to get the job done, was to undertake it ourselves. So, with a good deal of hesitation, because of the arduous and difficult nature of the task, we set to work on the first volume, Old Virginia Houses: The Mobjack Bay Country, which was published in 1955 . . . This encouraged us to go ahead with the second volume in the series, covering that section of the state, perhaps its most historic region, which extends along the James River, from Richmond to the Capes. Many scholars, owners, and many friends have assisted us, have given information, have helped in various ways. . . .

a great book for educators to learn important topics about student transition to employment, the author provides thorough explanations and classroom applications, this is a helpful book to use during curriculum planning

Needed for school. Great condition. Content was as expected.

The book is an easy read, good info although I felt that the chapters were very repetitive about the content

This was an educational and beneficial book. However, when I got to chapter five, I discovered that eight pages were blank. Unfortunately, I am now stuck with the book, as the return/replacement window has passed. I wish I would have scanned through the book and noticed this prior to my using it for class.

Arrived quickly and perfectly described.

Perfect for use when consulting!

This book has definitely been one of my favourite reads of the year so far, and the funny thing is, I didn't think it would be.It is a middle grade book revolving around our main character Milo, who is the adopted son of the Pines'. He was looking forward to his Christmas break and some much needed downtime with his family, who happen to own and run an inn - The Greenglass House, that is known to welcome all kinds of visitors, including smugglers. However, just as Milo had finished all his schoolwork early to really enjoy the rest of his break, several guests show up at the doorstep of the inn, each with a stranger reason for the visit than the next. Milo, a lover of mysteries, and mainly just bored, begins an adventure, in which he tries to find out the real reason behind their stay, and how they might be connected to one another. In doing so, he meets a young girl his age, Meddy, who encourages him to role play and use his imagination. Something that proves to be quite difficult for Milo at first, as he is grounded in reality, but he soon learns to enjoy the role playing as it gives him a chance to pretend to be someone he is not. This is important for Milo's character development, as he struggles with his identity and the many unanswered questions regarding his background and birth parents, and seems to deal with a lot of guilt for wanting to know, given that his parents are great and loving and have never done anything for him to wish otherwise. At first, I was a little put off by the "game", maybe because it's way above my age group and so I couldn't help but think how childish these kids are being. Meddy, especially, came off as very annoying and clingy and her insistence on sticking to character could become quite irritating - Milo sure did get frustrated with her a few times, however, as they get closer and closer to solving the mystery the game begins to make more sense until it reaches a climax, which honestly left me sitting with my jaw on the floor and gave me goosebumps all over.I really enjoyed getting to know each of the guests separately, and trying to figure out who was up to what. They all act quite suspicious, and they all have bizarre backgrounds that sometimes don't add up. Suddenly, things start disappearing - guests belongings are being stolen, and everyone is a suspect. Milo makes it his mission to find these missing belongings, but more importantly to find out who is behind all this thievery - and why. When Milo suggests that they all begin sharing stories after dinner, as a way to pass the time and get to know each other a little better, you start seeing glimpses of each one's true intentions and Milo uses that time to try and assess the details for any clues and piece things together, with the help of Meddy. It all reminded me a little bit of Agatha Christie's, And Then There Were None. Obviously, a more innocent, child-friendly version, just in the way that these strangers are all stuck in a house and telling stories and hiding things and so on. Then again, I probably made that connection because I had recently read it.A great mystery, with some great characters that are all well developed and rounded. Milo is a great protagonist to have and root for, and his sidekick Meddy is a wonderful companion to him. The twist in the story took me completely off-guard, and I honestly didn't see it coming. I don't know if it's just me, or if Kate Milford played it well, but I was blindsided and found it one of the most unpredictable twists that I had read in a while. Very well done. That twist and ending alone quickly made this book one of my favorites, otherwise, it would have been just another regular old mystery.

I bought this for my 5th grade classroom library. Before I put a book in the library, I read it first. I thought the beginning was a little slow; however, I kept reading. About a third of the way through the book, I could not put it down! With about 2 chapters to go, I had the ending figured out and, NO, I will not even begin to offer a hint or spoil it for anyone else. I loved this book so much that when school begins, I will be telling my kids that it should be one for them to check out. As soon I reached the last page, I ordered the next two books in the series. Full of mystery, clues, and adventure. Can't wait to put it in the hands of my fifth graders!

it's christmas vacation for young milo and he's looking forward to a nice quiet christmas break. he and his family live in an older five floor inn near the sea which used to belong to an infamous pirate. it is usually closed for the holidays. much to milo's dismay, the inn ends up with several guests who manage to arrive just before a major snowstorm. all of the guest seem to have a hidden agenda and plenty of secrets. the house has secrets of its own. milo and meddy, the cook's daughter, try to untangle the mysteries, thefts, and numerous secrets. although it is classed a young adult book, it is more than good enough for adult mystery lovers as well.

A perfect kids book! Had it been around when I was young I would have read it a hundred times by now (like my other favorites: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, A Wrinkle in Time, and Charlotte’s Web). It’s an adventure story complete with rambling houses, hidden treasures, eccentric characters, ghosts, and Mystery with a capital M.12-year old Milo Pine lives with his adoptive parents in Greenglass House — a rambling old Inn whose “regulars” are the smugglers who need a little “shore time.” Greenglass House is perched above a deep gorge — accessible only via a creaky cable car named the Whilforber Whirlwind or a 310 step stairway. As Christmas vacation commences, and Milo prepares to snuggle in for some serious R&R in the empty Inn, the cable car bell keeps ringing and the number of guests (and emergency helpers) grow until Milo finds himself amidst a sea of eccentric characters who all seem to be on delightfully connected personal quests that center on the house itself.Weaving together folk tales and local legend with a little paranormal thrown in, Milo uncovers the mysteries of Greenglass House and the odd set of characters who are so fixated on it. Milo — prone to anxiety and panic attacks — also develops delightfully through the twin instruments of literature and role playing games.Good writing — the story is complex enough to engage adults and yet completely accessible to the target kid audience.

This is a sweet little story. It's filled with mystery, intrigue, and a little magic. Throw in some smugglers, thieves, and strangers and you get a fun little escapade. I thoroughly enjoyed it.I will say, as an adoptive mom, I wasn't prepared to encounter the dark adoption theme here. I felt really sorry for the character that struggled so with his identity - and it was never really clarified for him. I would warn adoptive parents to read this one with their kids and expect some painful conversations. It's worth it, but just be ready.

Milo knows that when his parents run an inn, there's always a possibility guests will arrive. But it's the slow season--and it's almost Christmas. As the inn fills with guests, Milo realizes they aren't all the random strangers they claim to be. He teams up with the cook's daughter, Meddy, and together they unravel a mystery that includes everyone at the Greenglass House.A tangled suspenseful tale that unravels one character at a time to reveal a story bigger than them all!
