Mr. Elford’s PORSCHE High-Performance Driving Handbook is superlative advice on how to approach driving any high performance automobile, not just a Porsche. The materials - including historical anecdotes - are relevant, concise, and augmented by myriad easily understood diagrams. Unlike other books on high performance driving, Mr. Elford’s rally experience also provides the reader with invaluable and unique insights and advice contained in the last five chapters of the book on how to approach inclement weather and road hazards that are completely applicable to one’s daily commute on public highways as well time trials or AX events. It is not an overstatement to say that this book is truly “comprehensive” in the truest sense of the word and rates five stars.This review reflects the perspective of one who, (A) has actually read the book, and, (B) has participated in high perf driver education and autocross programs offered by a national Porsche-owners organization and studied H. A. Watts’ Secrets of Solo Racing, as well as materials published by the SCCA, the Porsche Owners’ Club, the Porsche Club of America - Golden Gate Region, Nor Cal Shelby American Automobile Club, the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire, AZ Competition Corvettes, and both the 2009 and the 2014 editions of R. Jonson’s Solo Course Design [Houston Region-SCCA].Accordingly, I cannot help but believe that the negative reviews posted herein are at best analytically invalid, if not devoid of intellectual integrity; I am compelled to dismiss those same negative reviews as being nothing more than the chest-beating of internet trolls who have little experience driving an automobile.

I am astounded by the negative reviews. Vic Elford, one of the legends of auto racing and a founder of the Porsche Driving School, has written an extremely useful book for any of us seeking to be better drivers. Beginning with how to properly position the seat and controls, he goes on to explain how to accomplish balance, smoothness, acceleration and gear changing, braking, heel-and-toe, cornering, sliding, skidding and car control. He provides personal anecdotes which illustrate the "why", as well as explaining physical dynamics through the use of simple models. I refer to it often, and am certain I am a safer, faster and all around better driver because of this book. Highly recommended!

Contrary to the title, this book does not discuss driving techniques specific to Porsche. It is basically just a summary of driving techniques that apply to any car, with some technical Porsche data and personal Porsche anecdotes sprinkled in.

As an Oracle DBA, I was looking for a book that can help me better understand MySQL core concepts and differences compared to my primary working platform. I was looking for a book with the flavor of Oracle Concepts Manual. I partially read official MySQL reference manual but didn't find (get?) all the answers (nor I really enjoyed reading it - sorry AB doc. team!).I think this book filled my knowledge gap on MySQL perfectly. Actually, this book could easily bear different title, such as "MySQL concepts guide" or something like that. You'll probably read the book in a couple of days, thanks to the author's clear writing style.Let me give you an example. Some technical topics are difficult to explain in a few sentences, like the one on letter I (Isolation) from ACID rules for 'safe' transactions. Just compare the explanation on "phantom reads" from this book with the one you'll find in Oracle Concepts Manual (freely available on-line from OTN). Now, which one did you understand on the first pass? ;-)Thanks to clear and short explanations, right from the beginning of the book, I learned some important technical facts about MySQL that I could easily put in perspective with my Oracle background. For example:-"All InnoDB tables have primary keys"-"InnoDB tables are similar to Oracle index-organized tables."-"MySQL will only ever use one index per table per query!"-"MySQL doesn't cache rows for MyISAM tables, only indexes...as opposed to InnoDB"-"...counts are very fast on MyISAM tables and slow on InnoDB tables..."Obviously the chapters that I liked the most in this book are the ones that covers core things very well:"2. Storage Engines","4. Indexes","5. Query Performance" and"10. Security".All other chapters are fine but not essential for my current use of MySQL (like the excellent chapter on replication where it's obvious that Jeremy poses vast practical experience with replication from his workplace at Yahoo!).The only complaint that I have is the one on "Storage Engines" chapter. In my opinion multi storage engine architecture is the most important advantage of MySQL over all other database vendorsproducts. I wish author's went a little deeper with the details (and thanks but no thanks, I don't want to read source code ;-), especially InnoDB engine is not covered enough (hmm...or maybe it's just me, after all :-).Overall this book is highly recommended to all DBAs, the existing MySQL DBAs as well as to all others that work with other RDBMS and want a fast way to pick the most important technical nuances of MySQL.

This book is very practical and gives a clean insight for Power Users of MySQL. It also illustrates some concepts in brief and gets user going fast. Some of the topics like backups, load balancing are covered very well. In short following is what I can say in points.-Very good quick reference and tips for mysql 4.x users-Practical Tips and performance issues which you may not find in mysql official reference-Writing style is definitely "get going" type and not a "comprehensive guide" style.I liked this book and I use it as a reference. I would recommend this book to any MySQL 4.x users. Specially for those having the database in production environment, this book is really handy.

I read this back in the 70's and loved it. It is deep, thoughtful, and interesting. I bought this copy and have now hypnotized my grandchildren to do chores, go to bed on time, trim my toe nails, and avoid any old men who look creepy and wear red capes. Seriously though, we don't realize the power of fairy tales or metaphor. I actually recommend it to all parents. It helps to create your own bed time stories, and to understand our time-tested favorites.

I met this famous man and have always respected his idea about the fairy tale figures and their deeper meaning in the minds of children. I'll never look at fairy tales quite the same way anymore. But don't tell your children what Bruno said was the meaning of the story. Let their imaginations go to work and take them where they need it to go.

This is an important book for the healthy psychological development of children (and adults, too). It offers insight into the lasting value of these old tales, which were created and have been passed along for reasons far beyond, and infinitely more enriching, than merely entertainment. Even having been a fan of fairy tales and myths as vehicles for growth and transformation for years, I learned much through reading this thoughtful book.

It is well known that storytelling is an innate expression of civilization, in an effort to define who we are and to make sense of the world. The fairy tale is an important part of this tradition that has a long and rich history spanning thousands of years.First published in 1975, Bruno Bettleheim, one of Sigmund Freud's followers and an important contributor to psychoanalysis, has written an incredible book, suggesting that the fairy tale has a pedagogical use, educating the child about the struggles in life, that these struggles are an intrinsic aspect of existence. Following Plato, he believes that the literary education of children should begin with the telling of myths. In other words, the fairy tale can present models for behaviour, providing meaning and value to our lives. This wonderful book expresses this view extremely well and also provides a frame of reference towards the child's overall psychological development.I have read Freud for some years, and nowhere, including Freud himself, have I read a more succinctly expressed view on the ultimate purpose of psychoanalysis, than in this book by Dr. Bettleheim, he writes,"Psychoanalysis was created to enable man to accept the problematic nature of life without being defeated by it, or giving in to escapism. Freud's prescription is that only by struggling courageously against what seems like unwieldy odds can man succeed in wringing meaning out of existence." (P.8)Fairy tales inform us about life's struggles, hardships and the reality of death. From Bettleheim's point of view, the fairy tale is a "manifold form" that communicates to the child, educates them, against life's vagaries and realities, which are the unavoidable aspects of our existence. More specifically, the fairy tale is an educational tool to help children grow and develop into adults. He goes on to say that the child needs to be given "...suggestions in symbolic form about how he may deal with these issues and grow safely into maturity." (P.9)Bettleheim adeptly sets out to prove his theses by analysing well known fairy tales in the context of psychoanalytic theory, persuasively arguing the value of these tales towards the child's psychological development.If you are interested in psychoanalysis and would like to know more about the profound positive effects the telling of fairy tales can have on our young, this incredible book is indispensable.

It is difficult to write an objective review of Liam Clancy's biography. I am such a Liam Clancy fan that I only see the book through a fan's eyes. The biography was almost like Liam telling his story over drinks, a delight to hear Liam speak no matter what he says. Not well written, but fun to read. I learned a bit about Liam's early life and little about his later life. My main disappointment is that the book was not updated to tell of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem,s later performing adventures as well as his later work. I only saw the Clancy Brothers a couple of times in their early days. Liam performed with Tommy Makem as a duo for several years and solo until his death. Liam and Tommy were a great duo until Liam's drinking got in the way. When Liam was sober he was a fantastic solo performer. I understand he finally quit drinking a few years before his death. All of the Clancy Brothers as well as Tommy Makem are gone. A bit of joy has left the the world with their passing. This book is bit of Liam Clancy remaining. I still listen often to Liam Clancy as well as Liam and Tommy Makem on CD. As Bob Dylan said "Liam Clancy is the greatest ballad singer I ever heard." I agree with Bob Dylan. Liam Clancy is also a good story teller.

This book has a whole lot of detail that would only be interesting to Liam's family members. I was hoping to learn more about how The Clancy Brothers came to be and less about the minutiae of his early life and a small handful of his relationships. So much was left out, by the end of the book I was singing, "Is that all there is?"

Liam followed an interesting path to success. In addition to being a great singer and performer, he's a wonderful writer. I had hoped he'd written about the next stages of his career but it doesn't seem he has. He's greatly missed by those of us who enjoyed his music.

This is one of the most engaging, beautiful memoirs I've read in twenty years. Liam Clancy, the youngest of the fabled Clancy Brothers, succeeded before his death in writing the story of his family and the internationally renowned singing group that lives on in countless recordings. At the same time, he depicts Ireland, that sacred country, as only a native can. As character and writer, Clancy is bold and brash, irreverent and tender, charming and unforgettable. If you love memoir, get this book as soon as you can and settle in for a delightful experience.

The Kindle eBook version is NOT what Liam published. No photos are included.. NONE. The words themselves are beautiful crafted and flow as a musical conversation. The story wrenches the heart with dialogue that puts you there in his life as it developed. Incredible story from a sweet raconteur. The photos added a drenching pathos to his presentation. This didn't even have Liam's cover photo as a young man with wonder and reach set in his eyes. Recommend you not download this kindle format. It made the entire purchase feel like a rip-off. There is no obvious mention that this is what they are presenting. Angry at such deviousness.

Liam says in the book that he always wanted to be a writer. Well now he is. It is nice to read about his life in Ireland and his experiences with The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem right from "the horses mouth" so to speak.

I have been a fan of Liam Clancy, both as a member of the group, The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, and later as a duo with Tommy Makem, and finaly as a solo performer. I have heard him in person many times, the last time a few months before he died. His voice is absolutely beautiful. The book is almost poetic. He owned up to his faults and his own awe at the fame that came to him.

Life experience, not so much reconstructed as double-distilled, is recaptured in the telling of Liam Clancy's thrilling and insightful memoir. Here's his hometown, Carrick-on-Suir, an almost mythically Irish hometown in the backwaters of the Emerald Isle. Where careeneth a procession of townsfolk both dotty and dour: Here's the town publican. There goes a creepy-looking cluster of nuns. Hark the churchbell, tolling out the Angelus, and oh, have a heartbreaking serving of tragedy along with your tea. Most important of all, observe the morally upright Mammy Clancy in action, pinning her hopes on her eleventh child: surely this shy impressionable son is a priest in the making. The author's eye fondly revisits family life in loving but not uncritical retrospect, the idealized Irish family, thrown headlong into life's tough struggles.An idyllic setting, interrupted one day by the arrival of one world-weary American heiress with a hidden agenda. She's determined to travel the world collecting folk music with the young Liam as her assistant. But can it be, she wants to snag him and possess him as her own--much as Dido, the evil queen of Homeric legend, attempted to do to Ulysses? And if so, could you blame her? This kid's a natural: a real Irish choirboy with an old-world brogue and a penchant for reciting poetry. He obviously needs seducing.Ah, Liam, me boy, you're in for a bumpy ride... or rather, a picaresque romp from the footlights of backstage Dublin to the hollers of Appalachia, on to Cambridge, Mass., and New York's zany, East Village arts "scene," where you'll meet everybody who's anybody. And, every once in a while, right back home to Carrick again, trailing clouds of cultural alienation. Not that any of that stops our hero.As he describes becoming a force to be reckoned with-first on the stage, and then in popular music-Liam Clancy is forthright about a few gaffs and stumbles. The hardest to swallow-given the idealization of family that serves as oxygen during his early life-is brief, bitter mention of a daughter, the product of an early relationship, whom he largely declined to be a father to. An included photograph of the author, posed beside this beautiful child, is simply disturbing.As the memoir ends, The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem are just about to reach the inexplicable pinnacle of fame as accidental musicians. A bit unsettled by the nutty East Village scene, our boys momentarily return to the village of their roots-where the local townfolk haven't changed a bit-they are, as ever, totally insane. Back they go to New York.The reader senses the chronicle ahead. . . Fame is fleeting, the singing group will eventually tire of life on the road, and, after all, to many amps can you crank a pennywhistle before someone's sinus linings hit a harmonic? One prays for Volume Two, wherein Liam, classical hero that we know him to be, crowns life's journey with maturity and self-knowledge, and expiates a life of fond transgressions by founding his own rollicking, loving Celtic dynasty. Of course, Volume 2 will need to be as thoughtful, resonant, funny and well-crafted as the present work, so that the reading of Liam's life remains in keeping with the living of it.

When I first opened the book I was astonished and captivated by the colorful and life-like art, but then fascinated by the text as well. This book has more than a story to tell. It's a take on the last 100 years that is compelling and entertaining at the same time. It has a pulse that keeps the reader engaged.

COOL is my favorite book in my house. The illustrations are amazing and have never seen such a comprehensive exploration of the history of style. The storytelling is beautiful and book is so inspiring. This duo is super talented, hope they put more work out!

The book is very easy to understand and I hope that every parent will let their kids read this book.

Reading this book, I felt so nostalgic. It's like going back to being a teen again. Being a teenager is a roller coaster experience in a person's life. There are up's and down's and everyone has to deal with it. The author really made the right decision for choosing this topic because teens really are in need of guidance - and this book gives them. I find Chapter 1, knowing how and why to say "no" and Chapter 3, Ways to Find Good Friends the most interesting chapters for me. Will surely share this with my relatives that are in the stage of being a teen.

It seems that in our passive world it is often too common that people have not learned how to tell others no - or feel guilty when they do it. This ebook is a common sense guide which is useful for helping teens learn how to say no in situations where it is the correct and appropriate answer. Of course, she is a teenage girl she thinks we are annoying, but I think this has really helped her. She has been staying out of trouble the past few weeks because of this book. This new book by Jennifer Love is just great. It showed me that although my 13 &16 year-olds are screaming for freedom and independence, I am still their parent and I am the one who is responsible for setting boundaries and guiding them through the extra-difficult teen years. So - I found this book to be very useful - with lots of practical advice on dealing with teens in general - plus - lots of tips for dealing with many of the specific issues teens are facing. Now I am a mom and I have two little boys and I want them to learn its not going to be the end of the world if you say NO to your friends.I agree that choosing your companions and developing a good habit will certainly help you move in the right circles. Learning what you want and what you are at an early stage is a good way to start.

ROBERTO AGUIRRE-SACASA is an award-winning playwright, screenwriter, and comic book writer. In television, he was a writer on the HBO series BIG LOVE for three years, and is currently a writer/producer on GLEE. Some may sneer that Archie comics is just jumping on the zombie band wagon, but you would be OH SO WRONG. This is not only the best Archie comic in years, but a great, well written and drawn horror comic. I don't want to spoil it but I will say, even though this is set in Riverdale, and all the familiar characters are there, this isn't the usual Archie fluff. It still has the troika of love interests, between Archie, Veronica and Betty, but the rise of the zombies is intelligent (and has a great twist to it), as well as the other characters, Jughead, Ethel, Midge, Mr. Lodge, etc. The characters are drawn more realistically and there are a few really brutal parts that may shock long time Archie readers. All i can say is - When will they make a movie out of this, and when will volume 2 be available? GREAT JOB to all!

.I'm literally stunned at this combination of characters and situations and how much fun it is. Admit it- it's refreshing to see a note of horror and tension be inserted into Archie's cotton candy world- it's even more fun if you've always found the Archie gangs pervious attitudes and situation in years past..well...irritating. There's certain glee to be found in getting to see these iconic characters put in a situation theyre totally unprepared to face for a change instead of drinking malts and scheming about dates. So in this case zombies are actually a breath of fresh air in this context and the walking dead ironically add new life to the franchise. Even if you don't like Archie this is may be even more enjoyable to read because of what the gang has to face. A+ a gimmick that works for once.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this. After all, it's Archie and while I love these comics, they're really not known for their dark themes. If you've read this comic then you're already chuckling at that since you know how dark this series can get. If you haven't, then my recommendation is to throw everything you know about Archie Comics out of the window. My biggest fear was that this would be like the Archie vs (insert icon of violence here) crossovers where nothing really bad happens and everyone is hunky dory at the end. This is not the case.The story takes the basic story from the main series and that's somewhat about where the similarities end - and I mean that in a good way. You have the love triangle between Archie, Betty, and Veronica, but it's approached in a more mature way. Neither of the two women are happy with sharing and their friendship is incredibly strained at times, made even worse by the fact that there are zombies. The zombification of Riverdale is also fun, as it's interesting to see who gets turned first (other than Jughead and his dog) and who survives.The artwork is also well done, as the artists eschew the traditional Archie style, which helps make this series its own thing. If I'm not mistaken this was AC's attempt to market their comics to a different crowd and freshen up their image, which seems to have worked for the most part. I have no doubt that this first volume will be a novelty purchase for a lot of people since that's what this was for me, but it's good enough that I'm going to check out further volumes and the Sabrina series.

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this. Over the years Archie has had a lot of "weird" crossovers with characters such as the Punisher and others which always retained the "Archie" feeling. However, Afterlife is the exact opposite of this. The story is awesome and full of twists and turns which truly take the characters into a much darker, horror fueled direction that hasn't really been seen before. The takes on the characters are much more "real life" than the Americana versions of the past. As a horror story, it really works on many levels, especially some of the twists, not because they're original, but because of the shock value of seeing it occur with beloved characters. A true great read for anyone whose a horror/zombie fan, though maybe a bit dark for those who live the original characters.

I have not read an Archie comic in quite some time (like twenty years). I was pleasantly surprised when it was announced that a gay wedding would happen in the Archie verse but only flipped through the book. So, then I heard of this book... I was skeptical at best. I couldn't find the book in bn to preview it (no comic stores around) so I soon forgot about it. But luckily a co worker posted about it on Facebook and said it was the best zombie book out there. Now zombies aren't my usual taste, but the fact that it was taking the Archie world and turning it on its head I was even more intrigued... plus the co-worker in question is a total comic snob. I knew it had to be worth a look. And boy was it! Can't wait for the next download. Of course with all the sub plots, incest? a lesbian couple? and characters I've never even heard of I want to go back and read some Archies!!!

I love what essentially is an origin story for the Pussycats. We even have the evil Alexandra Cabot who has always made the lives of the girls less than peaceful because of her jealousy. You would never see the backstory they have coming even from Afterlife..The story is perfect and gives some chills and shows a blood thirsty side to these seemingly sweet girls.Love it!

"Afterlife with Archie" #1, the series opener starts off dark, and strong. The sadness of Jughead losing his dog Hotdog to a zombie bite, gets things off to a good gruesome start. Other characters in the Archie universe appear and try to bring Hotdog back to life, not realizing he is coming back a vicious zombie dog. Juggie gets bitten and then things get uglier, especially at the Halloween party. Will Riverdale ever be the same? You should read this series to find out. "Afterlife With Archie", is a surprise hit.
