I got this book to help guide my teenage cousin who is in highs school. Like most teens he likes to please everybody, so saying "no", , is really hard for him. How To Say No also explores the common peer pressures every teen encounters. I love how insightful the author is, and she even expounded on the bad effects of these pressures. The book is very easy to understand and I hope that every parent will let their kids read this book.

Reading this book, I felt so nostalgic. It's like going back to being a teen again. Being a teenager is a roller coaster experience in a person's life. There are up's and down's and everyone has to deal with it. The author really made the right decision for choosing this topic because teens really are in need of guidance - and this book gives them. I find Chapter 1, knowing how and why to say "no" and Chapter 3, Ways to Find Good Friends the most interesting chapters for me. Will surely share this with my relatives that are in the stage of being a teen.

Some may sneer that Archie comics is just jumping on the zombie band wagon, but you would be OH SO WRONG. This is not only the best Archie comic in years, but a great, well written and drawn horror comic. I don't want to spoil it but I will say, even though this is set in Riverdale, and all the familiar characters are there, this isn't the usual Archie fluff. It still has the troika of love interests, between Archie, Veronica and Betty, but the rise of the zombies is intelligent (and has a great twist to it), as well as the other characters, Jughead, Ethel, Midge, Mr. Lodge, etc. The characters are drawn more realistically and there are a few really brutal parts that may shock long time Archie readers. All i can say is - When will they make a movie out of this, and when will volume 2 be available? GREAT JOB to all!

.I'm literally stunned at this combination of characters and situations and how much fun it is. Admit it- it's refreshing to see a note of horror and tension be inserted into Archie's cotton candy world- it's even more fun if you've always found the Archie gangs pervious attitudes and situation in years past..well...irritating. There's certain glee to be found in getting to see these iconic characters put in a situation theyre totally unprepared to face for a change instead of drinking malts and scheming about dates. So in this case zombies are actually a breath of fresh air in this context and the walking dead ironically add new life to the franchise. Even if you don't like Archie this is may be even more enjoyable to read because of what the gang has to face. A+ a gimmick that works for once.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this. After all, it's Archie and while I love these comics, they're really not known for their dark themes. If you've read this comic then you're already chuckling at that since you know how dark this series can get. If you haven't, then my recommendation is to throw everything you know about Archie Comics out of the window. My biggest fear was that this would be like the Archie vs (insert icon of violence here) crossovers where nothing really bad happens and everyone is hunky dory at the end. This is not the case.The story takes the basic story from the main series and that's somewhat about where the similarities end - and I mean that in a good way. You have the love triangle between Archie, Betty, and Veronica, but it's approached in a more mature way. Neither of the two women are happy with sharing and their friendship is incredibly strained at times, made even worse by the fact that there are zombies. The zombification of Riverdale is also fun, as it's interesting to see who gets turned first (other than Jughead and his dog) and who survives.The artwork is also well done, as the artists eschew the traditional Archie style, which helps make this series its own thing. If I'm not mistaken this was AC's attempt to market their comics to a different crowd and freshen up their image, which seems to have worked for the most part. I have no doubt that this first volume will be a novelty purchase for a lot of people since that's what this was for me, but it's good enough that I'm going to check out further volumes and the Sabrina series.

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this. Over the years Archie has had a lot of "weird" crossovers with characters such as the Punisher and others which always retained the "Archie" feeling. However, Afterlife is the exact opposite of this. The story is awesome and full of twists and turns which truly take the characters into a much darker, horror fueled direction that hasn't really been seen before. The takes on the characters are much more "real life" than the Americana versions of the past. As a horror story, it really works on many levels, especially some of the twists, not because they're original, but because of the shock value of seeing it occur with beloved characters. A true great read for anyone whose a horror/zombie fan, though maybe a bit dark for those who live the original characters.

I have not read an Archie comic in quite some time (like twenty years). I was pleasantly surprised when it was announced that a gay wedding would happen in the Archie verse but only flipped through the book. So, then I heard of this book... I was skeptical at best. I couldn't find the book in bn to preview it (no comic stores around) so I soon forgot about it. But luckily a co worker posted about it on Facebook and said it was the best zombie book out there. Now zombies aren't my usual taste, but the fact that it was taking the Archie world and turning it on its head I was even more intrigued... plus the co-worker in question is a total comic snob. I knew it had to be worth a look. And boy was it! Can't wait for the next download. Of course with all the sub plots, incest? a lesbian couple? and characters I've never even heard of I want to go back and read some Archies!!!

I love what essentially is an origin story for the Pussycats. We even have the evil Alexandra Cabot who has always made the lives of the girls less than peaceful because of her jealousy. You would never see the backstory they have coming even from Afterlife..The story is perfect and gives some chills and shows a blood thirsty side to these seemingly sweet girls.Love it!

"Afterlife with Archie" #1, the series opener starts off dark, and strong. The sadness of Jughead losing his dog Hotdog to a zombie bite, gets things off to a good gruesome start. Other characters in the Archie universe appear and try to bring Hotdog back to life, not realizing he is coming back a vicious zombie dog. Juggie gets bitten and then things get uglier, especially at the Halloween party. Will Riverdale ever be the same? You should read this series to find out. "Afterlife With Archie", is a surprise hit.

Actual rating 2 3/4 stars.This read more like a middle-grade novel. While I enjoyed it, the tension built expertly, I found the pacing really slow. Also the protagonist Angie (Angel) felt immature most of the time. While she was ingenious and had a never-say-die attitude that was admirable, I failed to connect with her.You get a sense very early on in the novel that there is a twist coming. And maybe I wasn’t paying attention, but I did not guess the actual twist. I had many scenarios lolling around in my head, some close to the mark, but none with the exactness of how this book unfolds. Which was a pleasant surprise. I like being out-manoeuvred by a well written novel.I was also wanting more complexity – the novel is very simple – in fact it felt a bit sparse… which considering its length is not a flattering attribute. But I can forgive that considering it was only Karen McQuestion’s second novel. I’ve really enjoyed her later releases and you can see how she had grown as an author. Persistence and practice really pay off.I feel her writing style needed some embellishment – I wanted a richer painting of the surroundings, sights, smells, feelings. And I think that was why I did not connect with Angie and felt the pace was slow. With engaging prose, I would have whipped through this novel in a matter of hours.The characters have single motivations and although you get a sense of how the past has shaped them, there was no growth from the events in the novel. It was great realistic fiction though.I don’t think I would have purchased this other than filling in McQuestion’s back catalogue from becoming a fan after reading ‘From a Distant Star’ and adding The Edgewood collection to my Library and TBR list.Some strong story-telling elements, but tone and pacing could be improved. A great effort for this wonderful little novel.

Angie Favorite's mother disappeared from her life on her 11th birthday and for 5 years, Angie has been hoping and praying that her mother would someday return safe and alive, even though everyone else assummed she was dead. Angie and her brother, Jason, live with their grandmother while their father tours the country with his band. The book opens with Angie picking up her grandmother's dry cleaning. When she leaves she is approached by a strange man who grabs her and tells her he wants her to see something. Angie gets free from his grip and runs into nearby woods eventually falling and ending up in the hospital. When Angie wakes up she finds out that her attacker, Scott Bittner, has been arrested, but that does little to help her growing panic attacks. Shortly after her attack, she is contacted by Scott's mother. She wants to apologize for her son's actions and make it up somehow to Angie. From there the plot really picks up and Angie starts to realize that the Bittner's may have some tie ins with her mother's disappearance.The plot pulls you in right away because the action starts immediately. While I was reading I could feel the building anxiety and plain creepyness and had a hard time putting the book down. There never was a good stopping point because it was all going so fast. Needless to say, this is a very quick read. The problem I have with the book is the characters are pretty flat. I know it is a YA novel but it would be nice to have a little more background on all of the characters especially the Bittner clan. I also think the book was tied up a little too neatly. I was left wondering about what had happened with some of the characters.Favorite has good parts and bad but all in all it was a pretty good book. In my opinion, if the author can get me to start feeling the characters emotions then it is at least a 3 star. There are definitely much better crafted YA novels out there but this one was creepy and fast. 4 stars.

FAVORITE may be categorized as a young adult thriller, but I found myself pulled into the story that revolves around a number of richly layered themes involving love, loss, and the often-complicated bonds of non-traditional families. This impactful story finishes up with a twist you won’t see coming. I loved it from page one.

I started reading this book on my Kindle Fire and realized that the pictures were just not that easy to see at on the Kindle so I ordered a paper copy of this book. I think the pictures are very important and there are many of them. It's not the best book to read on a Kindle.This is an ultra fascinating book. It might not be something you want to read in one sitting and you may get confused by the names as I did, but it's still an amazing book. I couldn't help feeling sorry for these young women who didn't know anything about what their lives would be like and didn't seem to consider that they were being married for Daddy's money and not for love. Some did find love, but most didn't. Some of the women took stock of their situations and made the best of them. And some were miserable.Many of us have heard of the Carnegies and the Vanderbilts and the Astors. But, there were other incredibly wealthy families that I had never heard of. A very interesting book in many ways.

I already own the 1989 out-of-print version of 'To Marry an English Lord' in my collection and its one of my absolute favorites! So when I saw that it was going to be republished I thought that there was going to be new information or pictures (and possibly a color section), but I was mistaken, the only thing new is the lovely cover of Consuelo Vanderbilt-Balsan. On the flip side, I am happy to have it nonetheless, and thanks to the great success of Downton Abbey and Julian Fellowes, this gem may have never been back on the shelves.Without giving too much away, the book is full of pictures and information of everything you need to know about the many American heiresses who went across the waters (some by force)to marry a money-poor, land-rich English peer during the late 19th to the early 20th centuries. The book has plenty of background information and images of the American, Victorian, and Edwardian high societies, as well as enlightening and amusing facts concerning these Aristocratic American ladies and their British spouses. In the back there is even a directory of every American heiress (that is at least known) to have married into the English aristocracy.

This is a delightful book that provides the stories behind the stories that Henry James and Edith Wharton mined so successfully in various fictional treatments that addressed the trans-Atlantic phenomenon. Several prominent figures serve to focus this chronicle, Jennie Jerome Churchill, Consuelo Vanderbilt Churchill, Nancy Astor and Mary Curzon. Each was successful in her own way and managed to transcend the role of mere society hostess, Astor was actually the first woman to serve in Parliament. This entertaining book contains much to capture the period and is said to have served as the inspiration for Julian Fellows' creation of Downton Abbey. A good book to read on a Saturday afternoon after a stressful week.

This is, without a doubt, the worst excuse for history/biography I’ve ever had the misfortune to buy. If I could give negative stars, I’d give them in double digits. It’s nothing more than a bunch of disconnected, disorganized short essays crammed into a strange, headache-inducing format. The reader will encounter pages littered with photos, copies of newspaper clippings, and quotations, arranged in a haphazard fashion around the essays. I can’t help but get the impression that this is designed for people who don’t actually enjoy reading very much, but are fond of the type of magazines one finds in the rack beside the cash register at the grocery store. The tone of the essays reinforces this perception of mine. Sometimes I enjoy reading a few articles from such magazines, but when I pay for a book, I expect something completely different. If you are actually interested in history and enjoy reading, look elsewhere. I wish I had.

I found this book to be incredibly interesting. I usually stick to the Tudor period when I read, but this book was recommended to me so I gave it a go...loved it! I knew next to nothing about this time period except that the social scene was run by an extremely rigid set of rules. I've been to Newport RI and driven down the beautiful Bellevue Ave lined with the magnificent mansions of the Gilded Age, but never took the time to read about any of their owners.This book has certainly peaked my interest in this time period, and I've added to my reading list a bunch of other books pertaining to this era, including many of the works of Edith Wharton. I'm also thinking I may have to give Downton Abbey another go. I watched most of the first season via Netflix, but then never kept up with it. Now that I understand the dynamics of Victorian/Edwardian high society a little better, I may enjoy it more.If you're at all interested in this time period, or are a fan of Downton Abbey, then I highly suggest reading this. Another reviewer put it absolutely perfectly when she said this book is a "...cross between a dynamic history book and a high-society gossip rag". Being written in the style that it is makes this a super easy read and at no time do you feel bogged down by all the names and families being mentioned (it CAN be a little confusing at first, especially if you're new to all these names I was, but you'll catch on). I'm so glad I stepped out of my comfort-zone to read this.

A very "different" read than I was expecting - what a great surprise! This deliciously detailed & described book is as much a comprehensive History of the British social structure from the ground up, as it is an explanation of one of the important economic impacts the United States had on England at the turn of the century to today. Finally, it offers interesting and often little known pieces of information, surprising explanations - and it's just a darn good read! I went back and forth, from the middle to the beginning to the end, then back again, looking at designs, dresses, pictures of the men & woman being discussed, even a descriptive listing of honors & titles. There are helpful indexes in the back, and a brief biog of each person in the English "Who's Who" of this great society, timeless in its uniqueness within the world. A book to keep, this one.

I purchased and read T.O.’s book “American Modern” while waiting for this book to arrive. I loved “American Modern”, and even more so this book. In “American Modern” we see his beautiful, highly edited style, including the transition of his urban apartment from a very modern space in the second chapter to a more maximalist style at the end of the book. In this new book, Library House, we see more of his very detailed decorating style and are given the privilege of viewing his wonderful home.In Library House he takes us through a tour of each area of the house, providing all the detailed inspiration for each area. He describes the process in creating a new house that is inspired by old concepts and ideas, and designed to showcase his amazing collections. Chapters include:• Imagining a House• At the Front of the House (A New Old Building, Through the Entrance Hall, Arriving inside)• Alongside the House Next Door (The Side Entrance, Classic and Modern, the Locust Allee)• The Two Front Rooms (his husband’s office and a bedroom, and the bathrooms for each)• The Main Stair Hall• Into the Library (the Library room and each of the sections of the room described in great detail, as well as the screen porch and his own office)• To the Kitchen and Down the Back Stairway (the kitchen and eating area, back stairway, laundry room, and wine room)• Out to the Garden• Back to the Studio• Going Upstairs (bedroom hallway, balcony, sitting room, master bath and bedroom)It is fascinating to read the detailed inspiration for the house and each space, and I found myself frequently flipping to the architectural design plans that are drawn inside the front and back covers to see how each space connects into the others. I loved to see his use of color and how he has arranged so many collections without any of it seeming chaotic. Everything looks so perfect together, as if it was simply meant to be.A fantastic book, and such a treat.

I don't think I have read a design or architectural book that is written with such love. It is almost a love letter to the house and to the actual design process as well as to his husband. Each area of the house is so thought out from beginning to end. It was a joy to be let in as a guest. Even the gardens were thought out to such detail and photographed in various seasons which was a joy to see. It is obvious that the house and gardens are loved and enjoyed year round. Thomas O'Brien is extremely talented and he used such good judgment in doing this house and garden for himself and his husband, who also had a hand in designing. I could see myself in the rooms and enjoying a wonderful stay in many seasons.

Another beautiful book from Thomas O'Brien. The Library House looks as if it was built centuries ago and added to through the years. Mr O'Brien has created a sense of history and place in this house, which only a true master can achieve. This book is a fascinating look into his creative process. Every page is filled with inspiration and beauty. I recommend it to anyone who is an admirer of great design.

A truly enjoyable book from one of my favorite American designers. This builds on the section from his earlier book, “American Modern”, that detailed the development of his country home - The Academy. It was fascinating to follow as he expanded that property to create this companion new “old” live/work structure. Really appreciate the level of detail and explanations provided. The photographs are beautiful. Great addition to my design library.

More of his favorite things. Not a book for expanding your creativity. Not about libraries either. Sent it back.

What's not to like? O'Brien is extremely talented. It's a glimpse in his country home.
