About the Author

JOHN BREGLIO (New York City) has spent over three decades working in all sectors of the entertainment industry, including theatre, motion pictures, publishing, and music. As an entertainment lawyer, he was instrumental in helping his clients to produce and finance plays, musicals, and films for nearly four decades. In 2008, he retired from his law practice and since then has been producing plays, musicals, and films independently, including the critically acclaimed revival of A Chorus Line and Dreamgirls. Breglio has served as chair of the Theatre Development Fund and has sat on the boards of the American Foundation for AIDS Research, the Alliance for the Arts, the John Golden Fund, and Young Playwrights. He has also lectured frequently for the National Law Journal Seminars, the Practicing Law Institute, and at Yale University and Columbia University School of the Arts, where he has taught a graduate course on theatre and the law. In 2005, he received the Actors' Fund Medal of Honour, and he has been recognised for his contributions to the theatrical community by the Public Theatre, the National Corporate Theatre Fund, and Cherry Lane Theatre.

A combination of B'way advice and stories from the trenches from an entertainment lawyer/B'way producer. Breglio walks the reader through the many, many steps of becoming a producer, from identifying source material to Opening Night, all with anecdotes and asides about his own experiences with some of B'way's biggest names (he doesn't really dish any dirt, but sometimes what's unsaid says it all). He also explains clearly some of the questions I've had about how various parts of the theatre business work (in full disclosure, I've produced one B'way show and invested in numerous others, but don't know the author).

Speaking from his decades of experience as a theatrical and entertainment attorney and his more recent experience as a Broadway producer, he opens up the kimono to talk in real terms about how the business end of theater really works. Or Get Killed"!The author offers enough technical detail about contracts and negotiations to be useful without becoming pedantic. He spices up the technical talk with vignettes from real shows he has represented or produced, and the complexities involved in balancing financial considerations with managing strong personalities. As a broadway producer, I can attest how great this book is. I've learned new things from it. The behind the scenes stories on how collaborations happened and negotiations are really interesting.This could be used as a textbook to teach a college course on the subject.

It's actually a sermon he preached at a conference in Atlanta nearly a decade ago. Although I found the book to be a good read, I could see many Christians being offended by Washer's direct charges against the American church. Paul Washer was a missionary in Peru for ten years, and today he preaches passionately against false gospels. After a brief introduction, the Ten Indictments Against the Modern Church is organized in the following chapters:1. A Denial of the Sufficiency of Scripture2. An Ignorance of God3. A Failure to Address Man's Malady4. An Ignorance of the Gospel of Jesus Christ5. An Unbiblical Gospel Invitation6. An Ignorance Regarding the Nature of the Church7. Yes, its broad-brushed. Yes, there are times when it is a little too harsh. Yes, some details may be applied in different ways according to context. There's no doubt Paul Washer is an intense guy. But there is also no doubt to me that he has his finger on the pulse of the American church and he has found but a very faint heartbeat. Washer's ten indictments are nothing new and all of them may not apply to us or to our church situations but I urge Christian readers to give Washer's thoughts a fair hearing. I put Paul Washer in the category of men like Leonard Ravenhill and Keith Green, of preachers like AW Tozer and Vance Havner. What they said wasn't always just right, but it was always memorable and the part that was right had such a way of getting to the heart of things that you couldn't help but be moved. I am thankful for brother Washer and pray that I will take to heart the message of this book.

This is the kind of message the church needs. And it is so, because it is from the Bible, exclusively. Al Christians should be aware of the dangers of not having the Word of God as their rule of life. The sufficient Word is the place to know the person of Jesus and the way to properly worship Him. This is a strong message that is similar, in a sense, of Johnathan Edwards' 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God'. The church needs this message. We need such a message. I needed that message. A must read book!

Much like Ravenhill and Tozer, Paul Washer is not one to hold back. His book "Ten Indictments Against the Modern Church" is a great example. In this short book, you will find much to challenge you. I don't agree with every perspective Washer has, but honestly hearing the hard-hitting message is refreshing in a day where so much of Christian publishing seems very weak and overly consoling. Don't get me wrong, we do need comfort. But there are also times when we need to be shaken deeply.The 10 indictments are as follows:1. A denial of the sufficiency of Scripture2. An ignorance of God3. A failure to address man's malady4. An ignorance of the gospel of Jesus Christ5. An unbiblical gospel invitation6. An ignorance regarding the nature of the church7. A lack of compassionate church discipline8. A silence on separation9. A replacement of the scriptures regarding the family10. Pastors malnourished in the word of GodI do struggle some with books that are as hard-hitting as this one. There is always the danger of feeling like we are not doing enough and working our way into a legalistic, and even condemning, state of life. We are all called to different ways of living out our calling and life. Some are called to a more separate way of life, while others are not. Some can drop everything and become what we normally think of as a full-time minister (really we are all full-time ministers regardless of our occupation), but not all are called to that level of sacrifice. If not balanced with a firm understanding of grace, a book like this can cause people to struggle with condemnation rather than conviction, hence the four-star rating. Still, we could all use a little more reading that makes us search ourselves more closely.If you want a challenging read that will stir your heart, pick up this book.

Paul Washer's love for Christ is so intimate it is almost painful. Such a yearning, such a longing to become more like Christ everyday. Pauls Washer has presented some very important facts about the state of the church, the state of evangelism and he backs every single point with the Word of God. Paul is right when he said there is but one Gospel, the Gospel of Christ. Because of our love for Christ, we will be moved to be obedient to His word. I could sit here and write a complete book review on Washer's book, however what I will say is simply that I felt like I have already been to church reading his book, I was so humbled and moved by his sincere urging. I noticed many have referred to Paul Washer's "hate". What hate? I did not read anything that made me believe that he hated, but that he is urging the church as a whole to get right with God. We do not need a counterfeit gospel. The gospel should not be for sale. Christ freely gave. We are saved by the grace of God, and as Paul pointed out, the gospel of Christ, salvation, atonement, regeneration, holiness, etc. is hardly ever mentioned anymore. What are the people being saved from? And why? We can agree to disagree but the Bible states that it is the word of God. If we cannot trust the scriptures and take them literally, why read them at all? May God continue to bless and use Paul Washer.

First, my skill level: I am a photography enthusiast who has a fairly good grasp of photographic theory and methods, who has an eye for image composition, and who uses a DSLR to produce quality images, for someone of my experience. NOT a professional. NOT an expert. But passionate and always learning.Now, my review:I celebrate this book's powerful impact on my photography, an impact that occurred because I read the book as a 176 page persuasive argument in favor of manual exposure.On colorful, glossy, and attractively arrayed pages, Peterson argues for a distinction between an image's "correct exposure" and its "creatively correct exposure." The former, your camera's light meter will reliably report; the latter, you must derive based on the scene and your intentions for it. Camera light meters don't care about which items photographers want in focus or left intentionally over- or underexposed; they care only about the degree to which the areas of frames assigned to their attention meet the accepted standard 18% grey specification. When that standard produces an image to your liking, great! But many times, your intended image is not possible if the meter's guidance is accepted. Hence, the need for manual exposure.This book is a concise, yet thorough and eminently readable discussion of factors that affect an image's exposure: aperture (how wide open is the hole that lets light in through the lens to reach the camera's sensor), shutter speed (how long is that hole open), and light (that which allows the camera and its photographer to "see" anything). Interestingly, Peterson does not spend nearly as much time on ISO (the sensitivity of the camera's sensor to light) as he does on aperture and shutter speed, but his choice does not damage the book's final excellence.Appearing, on average, about once per page are wonderful images from his professional work that showcase whatever subject matter is currently under review. More importantly, each of those images is accompanied by a marvelously detailed report as to the reason for his presence at the scene reflected, as well as his thought process that yielded the settings and methods choices he made before pushing the shutter button. I am a big fan of such process captions, and Peterson writes them VERY well.Earlier I said this book functioned for me as a persuasive argument for shooting in manual exposure. Because of this book, I made the choice to shoot manual from now on, except when conditions require aperture- or shutter priority. Before reading "Understanding Exposure," I would have snickered at the suggestion that I would shoot in manual. But Peterson's work convinced me that if you understand the interplay of aperture, shutter, ISO, and light well enough - and I think I do - then manual mode is the mode that offers the best chance of producing the image of your vision. As important, the book convinced me that manual mode is not nearly as challenging or cumbersome to employ as I once thought it was. Now that I have been shooting in manual for a couple of weeks, I tell you the book is right.I heartily, unconditionally recommend "Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition."

I LOVE this book!! I am a relatively new student (18 months) to the world of digital photography . I am constantly refering to this book. It is written in such a way that it is easy for even the newest photography student to understand. What I really appreciate is that EVERY photo in the book is annotated how it was taken..aperture, shutter speed and film speed, etc..is always explained. For a new photographer this information proves invaluable When I come across a section that is confusing to me I bring the book to my photography teacher and with his help I fully understand what is written . I carry this book in my camera backpack as a constant reference guide. Hoping that a newer version is in the works!!! Highly recommend !

Update: although I LOVE the book. The online content has proven impossible to view. I can't view the videos from my phone or tablet, and the site has frozen my laptop, twice.I'm pretty frustrated with the quality of the site but I still love the book itself.- AMAZING book. I knew next to nothing about photography before someone recommended this book to me. I just finished it today and I now feel like I have a really strong grasp of the fundamentals. I plan to read it again now that I have the basic idea to see if I can absorb even more.used many of the principles with my Nikon D3200. but the author explains well about all brands and how to use them.

This book is full of great information about the basics of photography. I've been around (mostly point-and-shoot) cameras for many years, but I finally feel like I understand the theory behind exposure.Mr. Peterson shares from his vast experience, including some amazing pictures. I especially appreciated his frequent use of two side-by-side pictures, one showing what NOT to do and the second showing the right thing to do.Although the author appears to favor Nikon cameras, he writes in a very generic way that applies to all camera brands.My only complaint about this book is that there is not a one-stop summary page. All of the pointers that indicate the type of settings to use for certain situations are simply included in prose format throughout the book. This will make it difficult to use as a reference without a lot of sticky notes or folding of page corners down. I would have appreciated a simple table presenting the scenario (i.e. shooting with backlight) and the recommended approach (i.e. Aperture Priority, f/11, ISO 400, shutter 1/250).Still a great read for anyone who is new to photography or would like to benefit from Mr. Peterson's expertise.

This is the most comprehensive compilation on combinatorial optiomization I have seen so far.Usually, Papadimitriou's book is a good place for this material - but in many cases, looking for proofs and theorems - I had to use several books:(*) Combinatorial Optimization Algorithms and Complexity by Papadimitriou and Steiglitz.(*) Integer and Combinatorial Optimization by Nemhauser and Wolsey(*) Theory of linear and integer programming by Schrijver(*) Combinatorial Optimization by Cook, Cunningham, Pulleyblank and Schrijver(*)Combinatorial Algorithms by Kreher and StinsonThis book, on the other hand, contains so much information and so many proved theorems - it's the richest resuorce in this topic, in my humble opinion.Using it as a graduate level textbook for an *introduction* to combinatorial optimization is kind of hard - as although it's richness, some topics are described without enough detail or examples (like the topics on network flow and bipartite graphs) - yet the authors probably assumed some previous knowledge in those topics.I prefer using this book as a reference rather than and intoduction.The heavy mathematical notations in this book might scare some readers, but no-fear! You quickly get used to it, and appreciate the greatness in the notations, as they make the theorems more short and to the point. On the other hand - getting back to this book for a quick review on some subject might force you to flip pages for a fwe minutes, just to remember the notation again.The authors intended this book to be a graduaet level textbook or an up-to-date reference work for current research. I believe they accomplished both targets!

I just downloaded the sample but I found myself struggling to read the symbols. Sometimes even after enlarging I couldn't read it.Just thought I'd point this out for any kindle users like myself.

PLOT- In short this is a science fiction piece about the fate of mankind that has built an underwater city to escape the sun's expanding supernova.ACTION/PACING- Lots of action, fighting and it kept the pace going strong. You will want to read this in one sitting. I tried to, but was pulled away by other engagements. LOW earns it's M rating for tons of fighting, gore, sex, and drug use that you will want more and more of. Orgies, psychedelics, and dismemberment? (not all in one scene, that'd be gross) What else do you need?STORY- This is a volume 1 and much of the beginning is getting the reader introduced to the word and to the characters. Once we get a bearing of the story, it moves along rapidly and keeps the reader engaged. The word that is created surrounds everything and is something I love about Remender. If you love interesting worlds and creatures, you will like this. In fact, if you liked Black Science, just stop reading now and go get this. I liked Black Science more, but they had a more fun concept to play with.ART- I loved the art of this book and I know some people haven't so here we go. A common complaint I've seen is that the art work is "blurred" or "sketchy" (as in art, not dubious) and at times, it is. The artwork is still gorgeous and to be honest I spent more time admiring it than I do most modern comics. For a comic about the dark depths of the ocean/sea this works very well in my opinion. As the depths of the sea still remain a mystery it feels right to have it drawn as such. Does every image need to be drawn with clean crisp outlines to get the message across? For scenes like explosions, orgies, and the ocean floor, I don't think so. It works to get the point in the eyes/mind of the reader and sets the mood in doing so.Don't judge this based upon its art style, it works for the genre and setting of this story. Sin City is heavily stylized in black/white because it is noir. Eddie Campbell's sketch-y rendition of From Hell adds to the bleak and dreariness of London during the Jack the Ripper killings. Charles Schulz's simplicity and expression add to the charm of Peanuts. The art of Greg Tocchini is not strictly modern comic book style art, at least not in LOW. /rant [sorry]RECOMMEND IF YOU LIKE- Black Science and Deadly Class- Hey, it's Rick Remender. Also Pacific since its all... water-y.TL;DR- good action, not modern comic book style [but still great], interesting and enveloping world, if you liked Black Science, get this.

Beautiful artwork. The story itself is hard for me to get into. It turns dark real quick. Such heartbreak and oppressive pain that I feel for the characters is something I struggle to keep reading through. I found myself constantly finding any excuse possible to put this down, and I never picked it back up again. Now, a LOT of people would love this, I'm sure. But I for one don't like overly depressive dark stories. It just wasn't for me. Especially involving children. Extremely difficult for me to continue such stories. If you're a fan of the hunger games, or possibly game of thrones, this might be just for you. Just not my kind of thing, unfortunately, though I will try to finish reading it. I'm currently about 1/3 of the way through it.

This book is pretty good, the story is intriguing and easy to follow. The one downside I have is the artwork. Although the artwork is beautiful and seems to be a good fit for the book, the art work at times is hard to follow. For example, there were numerous times while reading this book that I had no idea what was being shown in the pictures. Good comic art is easy to follow and understand and at times I had no idea what I was looking at, so it took me out of the book and ultimately I didn't finish the story.

This is a fantastic compelling story, with not super deep characterization (yet - it's only the first season) but great action and wonderful worldbuilding. The art is not my very favorite style when considered by itself as images - I love the clean and detailed art in East of West and Monstress, but it serves the story perfectly, absolutely perfectly, and conveys attitudes and expressions so well, it's organic, like it grew out of the story. Everyone in my family wants to read this now, just from seeing the cover.

Beautiful art and near-standard dystopian worldview takes sharp and unexpected turns, mirrored by the art, to plunge us into a great storyline so good I can't wait to get my hands on the next installments. If this is the level of indie comics, I'd give up the big Two anyday. Well-plotted characters who face real consequences for well-reasoned actions with no Deus Ex Machina ( so far) riding in to save anyone:what's not to love in this story?

The art is for sure not going to be for everyone. At first I was very turned off. But the story is legit. The story hasn't been getting the love it deserves. Which is all good because it seems like everyone else is loving the art. Which I'm only mildly a fan of.The art is cool, imo, because it's new and it makes you use your brain in a unique way, breaking you out of what you're used to.That said, the story is what I'll stay for. Great job.

I love exploring new, innovative angles on the comic book medium. Image is very good at this, producing stuff that goes way beyond the US traditional superhero picture books. LOW is an amazing work of literary science fiction told with equally amazing and stylish art. A mix of pirates, drama, action, and far-flung future, with an awful lot of tragic storytelling. My highest recommendation for those seeking something new and unique in the universe of fantastic art.
